Childhood trauma (CT) is a risk factor for schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs), and cognitive impairment is a core feature and a vulnerability marker of SSDs. Studies of the relationship between CT and cognitive impairment in SSDs are inconclusive. In addition, few studies have examined differential effects of CT subtypes, e.g. physical, sexual or emotional abuse/neglect, on cognitive functioning. The present study therefore aimed to examine the effects of CT and CT subtypes on cognitive impairment in SSD. Participants (n = 78) with SSDs completed a comprehensive neuropsychological test ba

UNLABELLED: Childhood leanness is associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia, but the effects of gender, age at anthropometric measurements and age at first diagnosis on this relationship are unclear. The present study aimed at elucidating these associations.
METHODS: Population-based cohort study with childhood anthropometric measures obtained annually from the age of 7 to 13 years in 253,353 Danes born 1930-1976 and followed to 31 December 2010. During this period, 4936 were registered with schizophrenia. The associations of childhood BMI with risk of schizophrenia were estimated wi

OBJECTIVE: Corpus callosum (CC) size and interhemispheric communication differences have been reported between patients with schizophrenia and normal controls. Childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS) is a severe form of the disorder that is continuous with later-onset disorder. Corpus callosal area was examined for COS at initial scan and prospectively through adolescence, and related to other developmental abnormalities for this group.
METHOD: A total of 113 anatomic brain MRI scans were obtained from 55 COS (22 female) and 110 scans from 56 age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers (22 female)

Individuals who suffered traumatic events or adverse experiences during their childhood have an increased risk of developing during adulthood physical problems, aggressive behavior, and psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia. Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia have higher rates of traumatic experiences during childhood than the general population, and those who suffered multiple traumatic events have an increased risk of disease relapse. The current study aims to determine the prevalence of different types of adverse experiences during childhood among a male patient sample with schizo

Spontaneous blink rate, a putative measure of dopamine function, was measured in schizophrenic, schizotypal, and normal children, aged 5.6-13.2 years during three different cognitive tasks. Unlike that of schizophrenic adults, the blink rate of the schizophrenic children who were not on neuroleptics was significantly lower than that of the normal children. There were no statistically significant differences, however, in the blink rates of the neuroleptic-treated schizophrenic children and the normal children. The schizophrenic and schizotypal children had similar spontaneous blink rates. Withi

BACKGROUND: Season of birth is a risk factor of schizophrenia, and it is possible that cumulative exposure to climatic factors during childhood affects the risk of schizophrenia. We conducted a cohort study among 365,482 persons born in Finland in 1990-1995 to examine associations of 10-year cumulative exposure to global solar radiation and ambient temperature in childhood with schizophrenia.
METHODS: Data on schizophrenia diagnoses and sociodemographic factors from the Finnish population register and health care register were linked to daily meteorological data using residential information.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of schizophrenia involves both biological and environmental risk factors. Studying childhood trauma in disorders along the schizophrenia spectrum, including schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), can inform early risk and protective factors for psychosis. However, no study has directly compared childhood trauma between SPD and schizophrenia.
STUDY DESIGN: One hundred twenty-four participants (schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder [SZ] n = 45, SPD n = 32, and healthy controls [HCs] n = 47) matched on age and gender were assessed for different types of childhood abuse

Schizophrenia is a debilitating mental health disorder that imposes profound economic, societal, and personal burdens. The negative symptoms of schizophrenia ( i.e. , blunted affect, alogia, anhedonia, asociality, and avolition) are highly prevalent and pervasive in the psychotic disorder and pose significant resistance to available treatment options. Traumatic childhood experiences are strongly linked with the risk of developing schizophrenia. Most prior studies have primarily focused on positive symptoms of schizophrenia ( e.g. , hallucinations and delusions), whereas less attention has been

Childhood adversity, such as physical, sexual, and verbal abuse, as well as neglect and family conflict, is a risk factor for schizophrenia. Such adversity can lead to disruptions of cognitive function during development, undermining intellectual capabilities and academic achievement. Schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is associated with cognitive impairments that may become evident during childhood. The Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank database comprises a large community cohort (N = 1169) in which we previously identified 3 distinct cognitive groups among people with s

Certain infectious agents can target the brain and interfere with its growth, development, and/or function. A number of studies indicate that exposure to common infectious agents during fetal and postnatal life may also contribute to the later development of schizophrenia and other non-affective psychoses. Epidemiological studies of maternal infections during pregnancy have provided somewhat contradictory results with regard to infections in general but have reported surprisingly consistent associations with specific maternal exposures such as Toxoplasma gondii. Childhood is also beginning to

Introduction. Recent research has drawn attention to the link between childhood maltreatment and schizophrenia. Child abuse and neglect may have an impact on symptoms and physical health in these patients. This association has not been studied to date in India. Materials and Methods. Clinically stable patients with schizophrenia (n = 62) were assessed for childhood adversity using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. The association of specific forms of adversity with symptomatology and associated variables was examined. Results. Emotional abuse was reported by 56.5% patients and physical abuse

BACKGROUND: Gyrification is an important index of brain development. We used magnetic resonance scanning technology to compare brain surface morphology and measures of gyrification in children and adolescents with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder and in age-equivalent healthy controls.
METHODS: Magnetic resonance scans were obtained from 42 patients and 24 healthy controls, mean age 17.7 years for both groups. We employed novel quantitative measures of brain morphology, including cortical thickness and a variety of indices of sulcal and gyral curvature. We examined these measures in the whol

Dissociative symptoms, occurring in many psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, are often preceded by traumatic experience. We hypothesized that various types of childhood trauma would correlate with levels of dissociative symptomatology in adult patients. Twenty-six patients completed the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Dissociation was significantly correlated with emotional abuse (r=0.84, one-tailed p<0.001), and physical abuse (r=0.55, p<0.01). We suggest that emotional abuse may play an important role in the etiology of dissociati

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine whether affective abnormalities could be detected in home movies of children who later developed schizophrenia.
METHOD: Trained observers coded facial expressions of emotion of 32 schizophrenic patients and 31 of their healthy siblings from home movies made when they were children. All of the patients met the DSM-III criteria for schizophrenia with onset in late adolescence or early adulthood. The sibling comparison subjects had no history of psychiatric illness. Nine emotions and a neutral category were rated.
RESULTS: Analyses revealed significantl

Childhood trauma (CT) is a notable risk factor for schizophrenia. Separately, CT has been associated with alexithymia, referring to difficulties in identifying and describing one's own feelings, as well as disturbed interoception, referring to difficulties sensing and responding to signals that originate from within the body. Both self-perception impairments have been observed in schizophrenia; however, the role of CT in these observations in schizophrenia is unclear. To address this gap, interoception was assessed using the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA), alexit

While researchers have for decades considered the role of social factors, endocrinology, neural function, hippocampal integrity, and cognition in the development of schizophrenia, there has been a relative paucity of studies considering the participation of the stress cascade in the interplay of these elements. As described in this review, stressful exposures and stress sensitivity may plausibly be argued to play a role in the etiology, neurobiology, and course of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. Notably, research conducted over the last decade has made it increasingly clear that

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity is a putative risk factor for schizophrenia, although evidence supporting this suggestion is inconsistent and controversial. The aim of this review was to pool and quality assess the current evidence pertaining to childhood adversity in people with schizophrenia compared to other psychiatric disorders and to non-psychiatric controls.
METHOD: Included were case-control, cohort and cross-sectional studies. Medline, EMBASE and PsycINFO databases were searched. Study reporting was assessed using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiolo
