Is there a schizophasia? A study applying the single case approach to formal thought disorder in schizophrenia.

It has been suggested that formal thought disorder, the incoherent speech of schizophrenia, may involve a language disturbance among other abnormalities, or even be a form of dysphasia. Six patients with and seven without formal thought disorder were evaluated on an aphasia test battery. Spontaneous speech was also analysed using Brief Syntactic Analysis. Poor performance on the aphasia test battery was found to be associated with general intellectual impairment but not with formal thought disorder. Naming was preserved in both groups. Patients with formal thought disorder, but not those witho

An fMRI study of functional abnormalities in the verbal working memory system and the relationship to clinical symptoms in chronic schizophrenia.

There has been evidence for functional abnormalities of the verbal working memory system in schizophrenia. Verbal working memory crucially involves the interplay between the anterior and posterior language systems, and previous studies have shown converging evidence for abnormalities in the posterior language system in schizophrenia. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we measured cortical activity in chronic schizophrenic patients and matched healthy controls during auditory and visual verbal working memory tasks. We employed 1) regional analyses specifically targeting the po

Auditory hallucinations in schizophrenic and affective disorder Nigerian patients: phenomenological comparison.

Although auditory hallucinations are universal phenomena, they show cultural and ethnic variation. We set out to study some differences between auditory hallucinations in Nigerian patients and their foreign counterparts. We also investigated the usefulness of auditory hallucinations in distinguishing between schizophrenia and affective disorders. A semi-structured interview was used to obtain information from 89 patients with auditory hallucinations who met ICD-10 criteria for either schizophrenia or affective psychoses and 10 others with organic mental disorders. Responses were compared with

Clinical characteristics of schizophrenia associated with velo-cardio-facial syndrome.

Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) is caused by a microdeletion in the long arm of chromosome 22 and is associated with an increased frequency of schizophrenia and bipolar mood disorder. The purpose of this study was to investigate the genetic, physical, developmental and psychiatric features of schizophrenic patients with VCFS microdeletion. It describes the clinical findings in four schizophrenic inpatients with the characteristic chromosomal deletion. The four patients displayed delayed motor development, language deficits, learning disabilities, mental retardation, early age of onset, chro

Speech and language therapies to improve pragmatics and discourse skills in patients with schizophrenia.

Individuals with schizophrenia display speech and language impairments that greatly impact their integration to the society. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the importance of speech and language therapy (SLT) as part of rehabilitation curriculums for patients with schizophrenia emphasizing on the speech and language abilities assessed, the therapy setting and the therapeutic approach. This article reviewed 18 studies testing the effects of language therapy or training in 433 adults diagnosed with schizophrenia. Results showed that 14 studies out of 18 lead to improvements in

Pragmatic features in patients with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disorder. Despite the fact that communication and language skills may be impaired in schizophrenia, only a few studies have examined specific aspects of pragmatic competence in these patients. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the pragmatic skills of schizophrenic patients and a control group. Forty-three schizophrenic patients with a Mean ± SD age of 40 ± 1.21 years old and a control group were assessed using the Adult Pragmatics Profile (APP), which is a validated tool consisting of three scales: verbal, nonverbal and paralinguistic. The participants in

A blind, controlled study of occipital cerebral asymmetry in schizophrenia.

In a computed tomography (CT) study, scans from 45 schizophrenic patients on an acute treatment research ward and 62 headache control subjects were blindly compared. A reliable two-dimensional measure of occipital asymmetry did not detect any differences between the two groups. Within the patient sample, however, both a correlational and group analysis indicated that absence of normal left occipital asymmetry was associated with greater psychopathology on measures of quality of interview, incomprehensibility, and auditory hallucinations. Other clinical variables including age, years of illness

The Duphar Lecture: on the etiology of alien, nonself attributes of schizophrenic 'voices'.

The etiology of schizophrenic hallucinations of 'voices' remains unknown. The following is a discussion of a hypothesis linking these hallucinatory phenomena to a disruption in discourse planning. The relationship between normal imagery and hallucination is discussed. The concept of 'alien intentionality' is introduced, and a theoretical argument is presented which links this phenomenon with the exteriorization of internal images. Statistical data linking discourse planning disruptions and schizophrenic data are reviewed, and a description of the treatment of a hallucinating schizophrenic via

Cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia: unifying basic research and clinical aspects.

Seeking to unite psychological and biological approaches, this paper links cognitive and cellular hypotheses and data about thought and language abnormalities in schizophrenia. The common thread, it is proposed, is a dysregulated suppression of associations (at the behavioral and functional neural systems level), paralleled by abnormalities of inhibition at the cellular and molecular level, and by an abnormal anatomical substrate (reduced MRI gray matter volume) in areas subserving language. At the level of behavioral experiments and connectionist modeling, data suggest an abnormal semantic ne

[Schizophrenia as a neurological condition caused by a failure in the lateralisation of the brain: macro and microscopic observations].

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmentally defined condition. Some of its salient symptomatology refers to language abnormalities that resemble an aphasic disorder. Recent studies suggest that brain structures that define language functions may be abnormally lateralized in schizophrenic patients. AIMS: To review the medical literature for evidence of abnormalities of brain asymmetries in schizophrenic patients, and to discuss a new concept regarding the hierarchical organization of the cortex by interlinked minicolumns. DEVELOPMENT: When reviewing the literature the limitation of

Schizophrenia as failure of left hemispheric dominance for the phonological component of language.

BACKGROUND: T. J. Crow suggested that the genetic variance associated with the evolution in Homo sapiens of hemispheric dominance for language carries with it the hazard of the symptoms of schizophrenia. Individuals lacking the typical left hemisphere advantage for language, in particular for phonological components, would be at increased risk of the typical symptoms such as auditory hallucinations and delusions. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Twelve schizophrenic patients treated with low levels of neuroleptics and twelve matched healthy controls participated in an event-related potential e

Methods for assessing positive and negative symptoms.

Once adequate reliability has been achieved, however, it is important to document internal consistency and external validity. This chapter has summarized some of our work with the former topic. It suggests that the SANS has high internal consistency, while the SAPS is somewhat less internally consistent. What are the clinical and research implications of these results concerning internal consistency? On a superficial and statistical level, these results might be considered to suggest that the SAPS is less valid than the SANS, and perhaps that therefore it is not useful. On the other hand, it m

Hearing voices.

An experiment is described in which people with auditory hallucinations were brought into contact with each other. On an evening television talk show, a patient--diagnosed several times as having schizophrenia--talked about her voices. Four hundred and fifty people who also were hearing voices reacted to the program by telephone. A questionnaire was sent to those who responded to the television program in order to get more information about their way of coping with the voices. From those who filled out the questionnaire, 20 people were selected who explained their experiences in a clear way. A

[Biological markers of schizophrenic symptoms: functional neuroimaging].

Despite heterogeneous phenotype, lack of pathognomonic symptoms and great variability of symptoms during the course of the illness, functional neuroimaging studies have showed specific patterns of activation associated to particular schizophrenic symptoms or symptom dimensions. Negative symptoms have been associated to hypofrontality; auditory hallucinations seem to be related to abnormalities in brain regions involved in language and, reality distortion dimension has been associated to left temporal lobe impairments.

No foreign language effect in Schizotypy: Evidence from German-English bilinguals.

Previous research has suggested that fewer schizophrenic and schizotypal traits are reported in a second language than a mother tongue. Such results make sense in the light of the so-called Foreign Language Effect (FLE), whereby bilinguals make more rational decisions and are less influenced by emotions and biases in a learned second language (L2) than a mother tongue (L1). However, this previous research is to date very limited, and apart from one large-scale quantitative study is based primarily on anecdotal evidence. In the study reported here, we gave German-English bilinguals the Schizoty

[Associative processes disorders in schizophrenia].

This paper tries to approach and systematize knowledge about the character of associative process disorders in schizophrenia. In considering schizophrenia as an illness composed of various symptoms which may lead to different clinical progress, the paper is mainly focused on disorganization of thinking and, consequently, speaking and communication disorders. Authors reviewed various concept of pathogenesis and course of associative process disorders in schizophrenic patients. Special attention was paid to a connectionist model of disturbed associations. This model originates from cognitive psy
