Nasal polyposis and fungal Schizophyllum commune infection: a case report.

We present a rare case of eosinophilic fungal rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps in a 32-year-old woman caused by basidiomycete fungus Schizophyllum commune. Diagnosis was done by the endoscopic nasal examination, computed tomography (CT) of the paranasal sinuses, the histopathological examination of polyps, the presence of eosinophils and fungal hyphae in nasal mucus and by the detection of S. commune by culture. The patient was successfully treated by combination of oral itraconazole and topical corticosteroid therapy combined with surgery. The pathogenesis and diagnosis of allergic fungal rhi

[Allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis due to Schizophyllum commune and Aspergillus fumigatus].

A 53-year-old man who had been suffering from asthma presented to our hospital because of abnormal shadows detected on a chest X-ray film during a routine medical examination. A biopsy specimen of a mucus plug obtained by bronchoscopy showed fungal hyphae, eosinophils, and Charcot-Leyden crystals, with evidence of lung tissue eosinophilia. Schizophyllum commune and Aspergillus fumigatus were isolated from his sputum, bronchial washing specimens and the mucus plug. We detected specific immunoglobulin E anti-Aspergillus fumigatus responses and precipitating antibodies against Schizophyllum commu

[Three cases of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis due to Schizophyllum commune].

We report 3 cases of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) due to Schizophyllum commune. The first patient, an 82-year-old woman, presented with atelectasis of the left upper lobe with mucoid impaction due to Schizophyllum commune. The second patient, a 53-year-old woman, presented with atelectasis of the right middle lobe with mucoid impaction due to Schizophyllum commune. The last patient, a 49-year-old woman, underwent a left lingular lobectomy with a diagnosis of lung abscess, but the diagnosis was retrospectively changed to ABPM in a later review of the findings of the surgical specime

Disseminated fungal infection with Aspergillus versicolor and Schizophyllum commune in a dog.

A two-year-old neutered male Coton de Tulear presented with lethargy, anorexia, and tachypnea. Cystic masses noticed at the cranial mediastinal region were diagnosed as granuloma containing hyphae of Aspergillus versicolor. Despite antifungal treatment using itraconazole, fluconazole, and voriconazole, the lesions spread to the lung. After euthanasia, Schizophyllum commune was identified in the lung and splenic lymph node. This is the first case of fungal infection caused by A. versicolor and S. commune in a dog.

Schizophyllum commune sphenoidal sinusitis as presentation of a non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Schizophyllum commune is a basidiomycetes worldwide distributed that has emerged as cause of invasive infections in immunosuppressed patients. We present a case of a man who was simultaneously diagnosed with a small cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma and a sphenoid sinusitis by S. commune. Intraoperative observation and histology description were crucial to consider an alternative diagnosis to mucormycosis suggested by the MRI. The diagnosis was made based on PCR identification and sequencing.

First isolation of Schizophyllum commune in a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina).

To date, Schizophyllum commune infection has been identified in only humans and dogs. A 7-year-old female harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) died after exhibiting corneal opacity, anorexia, and labored respiration. At necropsy, phthisis of the left eyeball was detected, and multiple nodular lesions were observed in the thoracic and abdominal regions, especially in the lung, heart, and lymph nodes. Histopathologically, numerous hyphae were seen in granulomatous lesions in the eyes, lung, heart, and lymph nodules. An isolate on potato dextrose agar from the eyes, lung, and sputum yielded a rapidly gro

Schizophyllum commune a causative agent of fungal sinusitis: a case report.

We present a case of maxillary sinusitis caused by Schizophyllum commune, in a 50-year-old female. The patient presented with nasal obstruction, purulent nasal discharge from right side of the nose, cough, headache, and sneezing. Computed tomography revealed extensive opacity of the right maxillary sinus as well as erosion of the nasal wall and maxillary bone. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery was done, and fungal debris present on right side of the maxillary sinus was removed and sent to laboratory. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) examination of the nasal discharge showed hyaline, septate hyphae.

Sphenocavernous syndrome associated with Schizophyllum commune infection of the sphenoid sinus.

A 47-year-old diabetic man with chronic renal failure presented with a 1-month history of complete ptosis of the left upper eyelid, left proptosis, and left-sided headache. During the course of the patient's care, other significant diagnoses were excluded, such as orbital inflammatory syndrome, carotid-cavernous syndrome, and cavernous sinus thrombosis. Neuroimaging revealed only minimal left sphenoid sinus disease. Sphenoid biopsy revealed the presence of septate hyphae on Gram staining and produced a fungal culture characteristic of Schizophyllum commune. Minimal sphenoid sinus infection in

[A case of mucoid impaction of bronchi (MIB) due to Schizophyllum commune].

A 51-year-old woman was admitted because of a productive cough. Atelectasis of the left upper lobe and eosinophilia were noted. The atelectasis was resolved after bronchoscopic removal of the mucous plug. Pathologically, it consisted of eosinophil accumulation with hyphae. Cultures of sputum samples revealed Schizophyllum commune. We diagnosed this case as mucoid impaction of bronchi due to S. commune. Eight months later, a productive cough developed again. Chest radiography showed atelectasis of the right middle lobe. Cultures of bronchial washings yielded S. commune and Aspergillus niger. Th

[Fungal sinus infection by Schizophyllum commune: Report of two clinical cases].

BACKGROUND: Schizophyllum commune is a basidiomycete fungus which is widely distributed in nature. Its role as responsible for disease in humans is not well known, partly due to its difficult identification. The incorporation of mass spectrometry techniques (MALDI-TOF) and molecular biology to the laboratories has allowed the description of a greater number of cases. CASE REPORT: In this paper, we present two cases in which S. commune was identified as the causative agent of disease: in the first case an immunocompetent patient suffered from chronic rhinosinusitis, and in the second one a sph

Allergic Bronchopulmonary Mycosis Due to Schizophyllum commune Treated Effectively with Voriconazole.

A 63-year-old woman presented to our hospital for cough, sputum, and abnormal shadows on chest X-ray. Schizophyllum commune was isolated from mucous plugs. Positive specific IgE and IgG against the fungi, elevated serum IgE, and mucous plugs with typical histologic findings of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) led to the diagnosis of ABPM due to S. commune. We initially administered itraconazole unsuccessfully. Changing the antifungal agent to voriconazole resulted in improvement of the symptoms and chest imaging findings. Her ABPM has not relapsed for two years since the cessation of v

Allergic Bronchopulmonary Mycosis Caused by Schizophyllum commune Successfully Treated With Mepolizumab.

Allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) is a complication of bronchial asthma (BA) and can lead to lung damage and respiratory failure. The standard treatment for ABPM is steroid therapy. Nonetheless, this treatment increases the risk of infections and osteoporosis. Alternative therapies include immunomodulatory biologics and mucus plug removal by bronchoscopy. This report describes a case of a 70-year-old man diagnosed with BA in 2014 and treated with inhaled corticosteroids/long-acting beta-agonists, which were later discontinued for unknown reasons. He was presented to our department with

A Schizophyllum commune fungus ball in a lung cancer cavity: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Schizophyllum commune is a basidiomycete that lives in the environment and can cause infections, mainly those of the respiratory system. Although S. commune is increasingly reported as a cause of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis and sinusitis, cases of fungal ball formation are extremely uncommon. Identification of S. commune is difficult using routine mycological diagnostic methods, and in clinically suspicious cases, internal transcribed spacer sequencing should be used for diagnosis. Here, we report a first case of lung cancer with a fungal ball formation of S. commune, confirm

Two cases of Schizophyllum asthma: is this a new clinical entity or a precursor of ABPM?

BACKGROUND: There is a close link between fungal sensitization and asthma severity. Although Schizophyllum commune (S. commune, "suehirotake" in Japanese), one of the basidiomycetous (BM) fungi, is a fungus that can cause allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) and allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS), whether the fungus causes or sensitizes subjects to asthma is unclear. METHODS: The bronchial provocation test using S. commune antigen was performed in two asthmatics who had demonstrated positive skin reactions to the S. commune antigen, and low dose of itraconazole (50 mg/day) was prescribed as

Chronic maxillary sinusitis associated with the mushroom Schizophyllum commune in a patient with AIDS.

Invasive infection with fungi of the Basidiomycota (rusts, smuts, toadstools, mushrooms, and puffballs) is extremely rare. We report such an infection in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus disease who presented with chronic maxillary sinusitis associated with the mushroom Schizophyllum commune. The organism was isolated from the surgical drainage material, and septate hyphae were seen invading the maxillary submucosa. The limited literature on this subject is reviewed.

New Bioactive Sesquiterpeniods from the Plant-Derived Endophytic Fungus Schizophyllum sp. HM230.

Endophytic fungi provide valuable sources for the discovery of secondary metabolites that can be used as lead compounds in drug discovery. In this study, four new sesquiterpenoids with a farnesane backbone, schizophyllol A-B (1-2) and schizophylloside A-B (3-4), together with five known analogues (5-9), were isolated from the plant-derived fungus Schizophyllum sp. HM230. Their structures were established through extensive spectroscopic analyses including HR-ESI-MS and 1D and 2D NMR. The antioxidant activities of all the isolated compounds (compounds 1-9) were evaluated via hydroxyl radical sca
