A multi-disciplinary perspective on emergent and future innovations in peer review.

Peer review of research articles is a core part of our scholarly communication system. In spite of its importance, the status and purpose of peer review is often contested. What is its role in our modern digital research and communications infrastructure? Does it perform to the high standards with which it is generally regarded? Studies of peer review have shown that it is prone to bias and abuse in numerous dimensions, frequently unreliable, and can fail to detect even fraudulent research. With the advent of web technologies, we are now witnessing a phase of innovation and experimentation in

Limb loss: The unspoken psychological aspect.

In the United States, health care providers have diagnosed 29.1 million people with diabetes. Uncontrolled diabetes is the main reason for limb loss. This review addresses the lack of psychological support after limb loss. Few scholarly sources analyze the psychological aspects of limb loss before and after amputation. These sources report that patients do not have a clear understanding of their disease process and that patients often report a lack of empathy and communication from health care providers. There is no standardization of postoperative care instructions causing great confusion and

Evaluating innovation. Part 1: The concept of progressive scholarly acceptance.

Understanding how the relevant medical community accepts new therapies is vital to patients, physicians, and society. Increasingly, focus is placed on how medical innovations are evaluated. But recognizing when a treatment has become accepted practice-essentially, acceptance by the scientific community-remains a challenge and a barrierto investigating treatment development. This report aims to demonstrate the theory, method, and limitations of a model for measuring a new metric that the authors term "progressive scholarly acceptance." A model was developed to identify when the scientific commu

The Elephant in the Room: Reckoning With Collegiality and Authorship in Academic Pharmacy.

Collaborative projects help faculty produce scholarship while balancing teaching, research, and service responsibilities. However, faculty's assumptions about contributions and authorship definitions can lead to confusion and disappointment in collaborative scholarship. Lapses in communication can cause delays, uneven workloads, and perceptions of unfairness. Inconsistent application of authorship criteria and a lack of transparency in authorship order may further create frustration and disengagement for future projects, particularly, when their contributions affect promotion and tenure. Men's Intentions to Engage in Behaviors to Protect Against Human Papillomavirus (HPV): Testing the Risk Perception Attitude Framework.

Guided by the risk perception attitude framework (RPA), this study examined men's perceptions of risk and efficacy beliefs as predictors of their intentions to engage in self-protective behaviors. The results of multiple regression analyses did not provide support for the RPA prediction that efficacy beliefs moderate the relationship between risk perceptions and self-protective behavior. However, the results provide support for the main effects of risk and efficacy on all four behavioral intentions examined (i.e., Internet information seeking, communication with a health provider, HPV vaccinat

Highlighting Heroes and Ignoring Villains: Visual Framing of Polio and Polio Vaccine in Newspapers.

Polio vaccine hesitancy remains high in Pakistan due to various socio-political, religious, and economic factors. To address this, the government of Pakistan and its international partners such as UNICEF have devised a multipronged communication strategy to counter resistance to polio vaccine in hard-to-reach areas of the country. In this strategy, mainstream news media has been identified as a key stakeholder, as they have the potential to reach a wide range of population and disseminate easy to understand messages including both visuals and text. However, less scholarly attention has been pa

A commentary on the impacts of 'Great Lockdown' and its aftermath on scaling firms: What are the implications for entrepreneurial research?

This commentary argues that scaling fast growth firms drive economic development, even in recessionary periods. While the coronavirus induced the 'Great Lockdown' and its aftermath poses particular challenges, we argue that the crisis presents the entrepreneurial scholarly community with an opportunity to re-orientate our research. Rather than more narratives of business success in the face of adversity, the Great Lockdown presents us with a fresh opportunity to examine how scaling is affected by context, by luck and by the porous nature of business growth. In so doing, our hope is that it wil

Getting your publication right - Part 1 structuring a research manuscript: A guide to writing original research.

Scientific literature forms the foundation of evidence-based medicine, enabling the dissemination, validation, and advancement of scientific knowledge. Original research articles represent the most structured form of scholarly communication through which scientific observations are translated into clinically relevant and reproducible evidence. Effective scientific writing requires the integration of rigorous methodology, ethical research conduct, critical analysis, and clear scientific presentation to ensure accuracy, transparency, and academic integrity. The organization of original research

Hostility Patterns: Implications for Nursing Practice.

In order to present the state of the science of hostility among and across disciplines, a review of the literature was completed. The knowledge gained may influence nursing practice. Scholarly works from nursing, medical and basic sciences, psychology, sociology, education, philosophy, business, communication, and criminology were reviewed. Similar patterns in the use of the concept were discovered. The patterns revealed five themes: hostility as a health-risk factor, hostility as a factor in family relationships, hostility as a factor in perceived challenge, hostility as a factor in criminal

From Picket Fences to Iron Gates: Suburbanization and Gated Communities in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Seattle.

Suburbanization has been a prominent urban process in the United States since the World War II. It has transformed American cities in profound ways in every single aspect of urban development; from population and wealth distributions, through political organization and affiliations, to the built environment. This paper investigates the link between gated communities and the process of suburbanization in the context of socio-economic inequality. As it has been shown time and again in the scholarly literature on suburbanization, the suburban neighborhoods in American cities have been traditional

OpenSpineConsortium: An Open-Source Framework for Medical Student Engagement in Computational Spine Imaging Research.

INTRODUCTION: Research experience is heavily weighted in competitive specialties, yet preclinical schedules constrain student bandwidth. Prior work shows students acquire coding skills quickly and that imaging-based curricula engage them in scholarship, but programs are institution-bound and rarely couple anatomical learning with authentic computational contribution. This initiative combines open-source spine imaging datasets, Python coding, and a consortium model targeting a clinically high-impact anatomic region. METHODS: OpenSpineConsortium (OSC) is a distributed, open-source collaborative

"It's Like a Whole Set of Things That We Do": A Qualitative Study of the Roles of Journal Editors-in-Chief.

INTRODUCTION: Journal editors-in-chief (EICs) play a central role in shaping scholarly publishing, yet little is known about how they understand and enact their roles. We explored how medical education journal EICs describe their roles in shaping the publication process. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using thematic analysis of interviews with nine medical education journal EICs. The interviews were part of a broader investigation of publication timelines and explored editorial leadership and practices, including experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants' accounts also

What We Talk About When We Talk About Empathy: Toward a Common Lexicon of Empathy-Related Constructs.

Almost since the term "empathy" was coined, there has been scholarly disagreement about its meaning. Today it can best be viewed as an umbrella term encompassing a host of more specific constructs, almost all of which are regularly referred to as "empathy" in some form or fashion. Promiscuous use of this global label to denote very different constructs has impaired communication among and between scholars, practitioners, and the general public. A team of 15 empathy scholars assessed this issue and created a lexicon for these specific lower-order constructs. In this article we report the result

Structural Racism in Psychiatric Research Careers: Eradicating Barriers to a More Diverse Workforce.

Investigators from minoritized backgrounds are underrepresented in psychiatric research. That underrepresentation contributes to disparities in outcomes of access to mental health care. Drawing on lived experience, scholarly qualitative reports, and empirical data, the authors review how the underrepresentation of minoritized researchers arises from interlocking, self-reinforcing effects of structural biases in our research training and funding institutions. Minoritized researchers experience diminished early access to advanced training and opportunities, stereotype threats and microaggression

Design of a Lyme Disease Vaccine as an Active Learning Approach in a Novel Interdisciplinary Graduate-Level Course.

A biomedical sciences graduate program needed an introductory class that would develop skills for students interested in a wide variety of disciplines, such as microbiology or cancer biology, and a diverse array of biomedical careers. Faculty created a year-long student-centered course, Scientific Discovery, to serve this need. The course was divided into four modules with progressive skill outcomes. Each module had a focus related to each of the major research areas of the collective faculty: molecular biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, and infectious disease. First-year graduate students e

A Scoping Review of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Image-Based Sexual Abuse: Terminology, Nature, Prevalence, Attitudes, and Harms.

Artificial intelligence-generated image-based sexual abuse (AI-IBSA), colloquially known as "sexual deepfakes," includes the non-consensual creation and/or sharing of intimate images generated by and/or modified using artificial intelligence ("AI-IBSA content"). While literature on AI-IBSA is growing, a scoping review of empirical (scholarly and gray) literature on the terminology, nature, prevalence (victimization and perpetration), community attitudes toward, and harms and impacts of AI-IBSA by and/or against adults is yet to be undertaken through a gender-inclusive lens. Thus, we searched s

Salem witchcraft and lessons for contemporary forensic psychiatry.

In 1692 and 1693, in Salem, Massachusetts, more than 150 colonists were accused of witchcraft, resulting in 19 being hanged and one man being crushed to death. Contributions to these events included: historical, religious and cultural belief systems; social and community concerns; economic, gender, and political factors; and local family grievances. Child witnessing, certainty of physician diagnosis, use of special evidence in the absence of scholarly and legal scrutiny, and tautological reasoning were important factors, as well. For forensic psychiatry, the events at Salem in 1692 still hold
