A 10-year Study of the Academic Progress of Students Identified as Low Performers after Their First Semester of Pharmacy School.

Objective. To examine whether pharmacy students characterized as low performers at the conclusion of their first semester remained low performers throughout their academic career. Methods. Bottom quartile performance on first semester grade point average (GPA) was compared to licensing examination success, cumulative grade point average at the end of the didactic education and whether the student graduated on time, using cross tabulation analysis. Relative risk ratios and confidence intervals were calculated. Results. Students in the bottom quartile for GPA at the end of their first semester i

Strategies for inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) education throughout pharmacy school curricula.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and others (LGBTQIA+) patients face stigma and barriers to health care, including a lack of health care professionals' knowledge and confidence in treating this patient population. Pharmacists are in prime position to decrease this health disparity. United States pharmacy schools have limited LGBTQIA+ content, continuing the concern of recent graduates without knowledge and confidence. This commentary discusses potential barriers to introducing LGBTQIA+ content into school of pharmacy curricula and presents five strategies currentl

Impact of a rural dual-credit high school and college pharmacy technician program with an associate degree pathway on a community hospital and region.

PURPOSE: Pharmacy technicians play an expanding role in clinical support and operational services, yet workforce instability and inconsistent training standards continue to challenge the profession. A highly trained and stable pharmacy technician workforce is essential to achieving the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists (ASHP) Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI) 2030's vision of comprehensive medication management in pharmacy practice. A dual-credit high school and college pharmacy technician program with an associate degree pathway may improve entry-level competency, support prof

Can learning experience in pharmacy school shape a competent leader? A cross-sectional study on leadership development, mental wellbeing, and Islamic values.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The contemporary healthcare landscape dictates that pharmacists demonstrate comprehensive leadership competencies alongside advanced clinical expertise to navigate complex patient-care environments effectively. While academic curricula and extracurricular engagements are recognized as primary mechanisms for cultivating these professional proficiencies, the psychological impact of assuming such roles-particularly the manifestation of academic burnout and stress-remains critically underexplored within the literature. This study investigates undergraduate pharmacy students

Antimicrobial stewardship using pharmacy data for the nurse-led school-based clinics in Counties Manukau District Health Board for management of group A streptococcal pharyngitis and skin infection.

AIM: To evaluate antimicrobial usage in the school-based clinics against operating guidelines. METHOD: Antimicrobial prescribing data (2014) from 10/18 participating pharmacies serving 14,153/23,588 primary school children of the programme were accessible. Prescriptions from 5/10 pharmacies were available for identifying type, amount, and indication of the medicine. One pharmacy serving a defined population (n=3,513) with single healthcare provider delivering the school programme was selected for detailed evaluation and identifying individuals receiving multiple treatments. RESULTS: Data fro

A Descriptive Website Review of Publicized PharmD Pre-Matriculation Programs.

Objective: Colleges of pharmacy have begun offering pre-matriculation programs to refresh and strengthen pharmacy students' basic math skills. Although previous survey-based research showed that many institutions offer a pre-matriculation program, it remains unclear whether such information is publicly available to prospective pharmacy students. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive review of pharmacy school websites to identify pharmacy schools that publicly describe their pre-matriculation programs. Methods: The official websites of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education phar

A Call for Clarity: A Proposed Toolkit to Integrate Foundational Sciences into Pharmacy Curricula.

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Pharmacotherapy Didactic Curriculum Toolkit has been used across many schools of pharmacy to guide the depth and breadth of therapeutics coverage, but no counterpart for foundational science coverage in pharmacy education currently exists. Broad topic areas for the foundational sciences are outlined in Appendix 1 of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) standards, but the standards lack specific direction with regard to foundational sciences content needed in the professional pharmacy curriculum. Faculty are therefore challenge

The current status of transgender health education in doctor of pharmacy curricula in North America.

Doctor of pharmacy programs across the country strive to prepare culturally competent pharmacy professionals who are trained to provide compassionate and evidence-based care to a variety of patients. Within the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education 2016 Standards and Key Elements for the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree, pharmacy schools are charged with the task of developing professionals who can identify and diminish health care disparities. Transgender persons represent one of the most underrepresented and underserved communities within the modern health care system, yet very little inform

Testing the Limits: Revisiting Standardized Testing in Pharmacy Education.

Standardized tests have long served as tools in higher education admissions to assess academic readiness and predict student success. The Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT), established in 1974, historically played a crucial role in evaluating prospective student pharmacists. Research consistently linked higher PCAT scores with stronger academic performance in pharmacy programs. However, criticisms of standardized testing, such as biases against underrepresented and low-income students, prompted a shift toward test-optional policies in many institutions. The COVID-19 pandemic, along with a

This study aimed to evaluate two sets of Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) student variables for their effect on NAPLEX performance.Methods. Data were collected from five schools and colleges of pharmacy over three years (2016-2018). Relationships between variables were first examined with bivariate correlations, and then by a series of multiple regressions using a structural equation mode

Measuring preadvanced practice experience outcomes as part of a PharmD capstone experience.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a capstone experience to: 1) assess student preparedness for Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) and 2) provide program-level assessment data. DESIGN: A capstone course was added immediately prior to APPEs. All capstone activities emphasized application and integration and were mapped to ACPE Appendix D, which details performance abilities expected of students prior to APPEs. Eleven learning activities comprising 20 assessments were created. Each assessment was pass/fail; students had to pass 15 of 20 assessments to pass the capstone course. Evaluation rubrics

Creating a new rural pharmacy workforce: Development and implementation of the Rural Pharmacy Health Initiative.

PURPOSE: An innovative certificate program aimed at expanding the rural pharmacy workforce, increasing the number of pharmacists with expertise in rural practice, and improving healthcare outcomes in rural North Carolina is described. SUMMARY: Predicted shortages of primary care physicians and closures of critical access hospitals are expected to worsen existing health disparities. Experiential education in schools and colleges of pharmacy primarily takes place in academic medical centers and, unlike experiential education in medical schools, rarely emphasizes the provision of patient care in

OBJECTIVE: To determine which student characteristics and performance criteria in the prepharmacy and doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program predict success on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX). METHODS: Transcripts and NAPLEX scores were reviewed for 432 graduates from the Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy between 2008 and 2011. RESULTS: The preadmission variables that correlated with NAPLEX scores included math-science grade point average (GPA), cumulative GPA, student type (internal or transfer), and having no unsatisfactory grades (p<0.001).
