Evidence of dissociative amnesia in science and literature: culture-bound approaches to trauma in Pope, Poliakoff, Parker, Boynes, and Hudson (2007).

The current culture of traumatic stress studies includes research that identifies the ways in which stress and trauma impair learning and memory in both humans and animals. Yet it also contains health professionals who argue that individuals cannot forget traumatic events. Many accounts present differences among these positions as a legitimate debate despite the substantial forensic, survey, and neurological evidence that both demonstrates the capacity for people to exhibit impaired memory for trauma and highlights specific mechanisms. In a recent article, H. G. Pope, M. B. Poliakoff, M. P. Pa

Conceptual Understanding and Conceptual Change Through Human AI Collaboration in Science Education: An Integrated Conceptual Framework from a Systematic Literature Review.

Human Artificial Intelligence (Human AI) Collaboration in science education is gaining momentum and more research is required on how it can facilitate students' conceptual understanding and conceptual change. Currently, most studies on AI in science education investigate the use of one particular tool and its effects on learning. However, it is the learning mechanisms that are triggered by these tools that help develop knowledge. This systematic literature review was conducted by performing a systematic search within the Scopus database which was last updated on 15 June 2026. In line with the

How science gets by with a little help from the Beatles: Detecting cultural wordplay in scientific literature using large language models.

The Beatles' cultural influence reaches well beyond music into television, fashion, and global media. As we show, it reaches into scientific publishing too. This study documents how often Beatles song titles and lyrics appear in academic article titles, identifying 2,237 exact references and 963 instances of creative wordplay in data from Scopus. Working from a curated list of Beatles songs and lyrics, we combine automated title queries with large-language-model screening, followed by manual verification, to detect both exact references and wordplay. To our knowledge, this is the first study t

Queering poppers literature: A critical interpretive synthesis of health sciences research on alkyl nitrite use and Canadian policy.

BACKGROUND: Poppers (alkyl nitrites) are vasodilators used by many gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) to relieve pain, enhance pleasure, and facilitate penetration during sex. In 2013, the Canadian government cracked down on the sale of poppers products, however prevalence of poppers use among GBMSM in Canada remains high. Poppers have been studied by medical researchers since the 1980s, yet qualitative and community-based research to inform federal policy, remains somewhat less common. METHODS: We conducted a critical interpretive synthesis (CIS) to better understand

Magical thinking and bogus science in four decades of MR imaging and spectroscopy: Some ideas on how to improve the scientific literature.

MR imaging and spectroscopy entered clinical practice around 1980 and have since generated one of the largest literatures in diagnostic medicine. That literature is conventionally described as self-correcting. This editorial examines the record of medical MR since its clinical advent and finds that description only partly accurate. Documented episodes failing that standard span a spectrum from honest error through pathological science to research misconduct. Examples include a plasma proton MR spectroscopy test for cancer that failed independent replication and preceded a federal misconduct fi

A Practical Methodological Approach Towards Identifying Core Competencies in Medical Education Based on Literature Trends: A Feasibility Study Based on Vestibular Schwannoma Science.

BACKGROUND: Competency-based medical education (CBME) is gaining momentum in postgraduate residency and fellowship training. While randomized trials, consensus statements, and practice guidelines can help delineate some of the core competencies for CBME, they are not applicable to all clinical scenarios. OBJECTIVE: To propose and assess the feasibility of a practical methodology for addressing this issue using radiosurgery for vestibular schwannoma (VS) science as an example. METHODS: The Web of Science electronic database was searched using relevant terms. A 3-step review of titles and abst

What do we know about volumetric medical image interpretation?: a review of the basic science and medical image perception literatures.

Interpretation of volumetric medical images represents a rapidly growing proportion of the workload in radiology. However, relatively little is known about the strategies that best guide search behavior when looking for abnormalities in volumetric images. Although there is extensive literature on two-dimensional medical image perception, it is an open question whether the conclusions drawn from these images can be generalized to volumetric images. Importantly, volumetric images have distinct characteristics (e.g., scrolling through depth, smooth-pursuit eye-movements, motion onset cues, etc.)

The state of the science of interprofessional collaborative practice: A scoping review of the patient health-related outcomes based literature published between 2010 and 2018.

IntroductionIf interprofessional collaborative practice is to be an important component of healthcare reform, then an evidentiary base connecting interprofessional education to interprofessional practice with significantly improved health and healthcare outcomes is an unconditional necessity. This study is a scoping review of the current peer reviewed literature linking interprofessional collaborative care and interprofessional collaborative practice to clearly identified healthcare and/or patient health-related outcomes. The research question for this review was: What does the evidence from t

Punitive school discipline as a mechanism of structural marginalization with implications for health inequity: A systematic review of quantitative studies in the health and social sciences literature.

Punitive school discipline deploys surveillance, exclusion, and corporal punishment to deter or account for perceived student misbehavior. Yet, education and legal scholarship suggests it fails to achieve stated goals and exacerbates harm. Furthermore, it is disproportionately imposed upon Black, Latinx, Native/Indigenous, LGBTQIA, and disabled students, concentrating its harms among marginalized young people. Its implications for health, however, are less clear. Using public health theories of sociostructural embodiment, we propose a framework characterizing pathways linking societal ideologi

The genealogy of dwarfs: reproduction and romantic mythology in Goethe's New Melusine.

Goethe's studies of natural form have occupied generations of scholars and the discussion on the relationship between Goethe's thought and evolutionary theory has never ceased since Haeckel's claims in the late nineteenth century. In scholarship which has aimed to address the question of change in Goethe's concept of nature, the focus has been primarily on his scientific writings. Aiming for a comprehensive understanding of Goethe's thought on reproduction, this article sets out to contribute to the ongoing debate by focusing on his literary text The New Melusine, a story centred on a dwarf fi

A review of learning strategies for adults with learning disabilities preparing for the GED exam.

Although there is a growing body of information, materials, and instructional strategies for adults with learning disabilities receiving remedial reading instruction, the same is not available for other areas of Adult Basic Education, including remedial math, sixth-through eight-grade-level pre-GED basic skills, and secondary subject areas in the GED curriculum. This review presents possibilities for consideration in developing instructional and testing strategies for GED students with learning disabilities. These strategies should be applicable to traditional academic content areas, cost effe

Rewinding Frankenstein and the body-machine: organ transplantation in the dystopian young adult fiction series Unwind.

While the separation of body and mind (and the entailing metaphor of the body as a machine) has been a cornerstone of Western medicine for a long time, reactions to organ transplantation among others challenge this clear-cut dichotomy. The limits of the machine-body have been negotiated in science fiction, most canonically in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818). Since then, Frankenstein's monster itself has become a motif that permeates both medical and fictional discourses. Neal Shusterman's contemporary dystology for young adults, Unwind, draws on traditional concepts of the machine-body and

A Commentary From a Law Enforcement Perspective on The Witch-Hunt Narrative by Ross E. Cheit.

As a result of his assignment to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Behavioral Science Unit, the author consulted on and has firsthand knowledge of most of the cases discussed in Cheit's book. He came to believe that there is a middle ground. Some of what victims allege may be true and accurate, some may be misperceived or distorted, some may be symbolic, and some may be contaminated or false. The problem and challenge, however, is to determine which is which. He basically agrees with much of what Cheit sets forth about seeds of truth in many allegations. He has concerns about some conf

Depression and creativity - the case of the German poet, scientist and statesman J. W. v. Goethe.

BACKGROUND: Goethe was one of the most creative poets, scientists and statesmen ever existing. Since the age of fourteen, he suffered from severe mood swings. His descriptions of feelings, emotions, and mental states related to temperamental and poetic melancholy, depressive episodes, dysthymic phases, and creativity are unique in respect to their phenomenological precision and richness. Furthermore, his (self-) therapeutic strategies and his self transformation in literature remain interesting until today for psychopathology, psychotherapy and creativity research. METHODS: Goethe's self-asse
