Evaluation of scorpion stings: the poison center perspective.

Scorpion venom causes excessive adrenergic discharge and cardiotoxicity. Publications on scorpion stings using mainly admission data, has led to the belief that most scorpion stings are severe and mandate an observation period of at least 12 h regardless of symptomatology. We to assessed the characteristics of scorpion sting victims with emphasis on severity and time to presentation by retrospective poison center chart review of 225 calls over 12-mo. Thirteen percent of patients were asymptomatic and 72% and 15% were mild or moderately to severely ill, respectively. The most frequent manifesta

Scorpion sting: update.

Scorpion envenomation is an important public health hazard in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Envenomation by scorpions can result in a wide range of clinical effects, including, cardiotoxicity, neurotoxicity and respiratory dysfunction. Out of 1500 scorpion species known to exist, about 30 are of medical importance. Although a variety of different scorpion species exist, majority of them produce similar cardiovascular effects. Scientists and clinicians have studied patho-physiology of scorpion envenomation by critical observations of clinical, neurotransmitters studies, radioisotope studie

Scorpion sting nephropathy.

Scorpion envenomations are ubiquitous, but nephropathy is a rare manifestation, reported mainly from the Middle East and North Africa. Rapid venom redistribution from blood, delayed excretion from the kidneys, direct toxicity of venom enzymes, cytokine release and afferent arteriolar constriction have been seen in experimental animals. Haemoglobinuria, acute tubular necrosis, interstitial nephritis and haemolytic-uraemic syndrome have been documented in human victims of scorpion envenomation. Epidemiology, venom components and toxins, effects on the laboratory mammals especially the kidneys an

Scorpions and scorpion sting envenoming (scorpionism) in the Arab Countries of the Middle East.

The twelve Arab countries of the Middle East are inhabited by 117 species of scorpions of varying medical importance within six families. Scorpion stings are a very common occurrence throughout the region. Twenty-two scorpion species are considered to be dangerously venomous, causing potentially life threatening stings. Accessible literature in English and Arabic on scorpions, scorpion stings and available antivenoms was reviewed to document the scorpion fauna and scorpion stings in each country. Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Jordan report the highest numbers of stings and envenomings. Clinically, th

[Scorpion sting (Euscorpius, sp.) in Italy and review of scorpionism].

Although they are very common arachnids, the scorpions (Euscorpius, sp.) do not constitute a sanitary problem in Italy, given that their sting determines only local effects. Scorpionism can anyway verify itself following sting exemplaries in Italy with imported gaods or caused by Buthus occitanus, that lives in the south of France. In this review the Authors treat briefly the biology and the toxicology of scorpions, describing the clinical picture of Scorpionism and the relative therapy.

Scorpion Stings and Antivenom Coverage in the Brazilian Amazon.

IntroductionScorpion envenomation in the Amazon causes variable clinical manifestations. Data on these incidents, as well as on the demand, distribution, and use of antivenoms for treatment, are still limited in the literature. This study describes the epidemiology of scorpion envenomation and antivenom coverage in the Legal Amazon area from 2010 to 2020.MethodsData on scorpion sting victims, such as sex, age, circumstances of the incident (including location and time), and severity of the case, were obtained from an open health data system called the Notifiable Diseases Information System. The Role of ProBNP on Prognosis in Scorpion Stings.

INTRODUCTION: Scorpion stings are a major health problem with potentially fatal consequences. Children under the age of 10 y especially face a great risk. Predicting the prognosis is important in reducing mortality and morbidity because it enables the use of early treatment options. In this study, we examine the relationship between proBNP and prognosis in scorpion stings. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of patients aged ≤18 y who were admitted to the child emergency service with a scorpion sting. We examined the demographical data, clinical findings, laboratory records, treatments,

Classification of clinical consequences of scorpion stings: consensus development.

The objective of our consensus process was to develop a unique classification of the natural history of scorpion stings and their clinical signs and symptoms. The technique used was an adapted Delphi approach completed by a nominal group meeting. Researchers included in a study received a questionnaire in which we listed all terms used in published studies to characterize clinical consequences of scorpion stings and all signs and symptoms belonging to each class. For each term, experts had to judge the relevance for classifying clinical consequences of scorpion stings and state whether they ag

Brain infarcts due to scorpion stings in children: MRI.

We report two children with severe neurological complications after having been stung by a scorpion. Clinical and MRI findings suggested brain infarcts. The lesions seen were in pons in one child and the right hemisphere in the other. The latter also showed possible hyperemia in the infarcted area. No vascular occlusions were observed and we therefore think the brain infarcts were a consequence of the scorpion sting. The cause of the infarct may be hypotension, shock or depressed left ventricular function, all of which are frequent in severe poisoning by scorpion sting.

Scorpion bite, a sting to the heart!

Scorpion bites are common in India. Usually, these bites are harmless but sometimes have serious clinical sequelae, including death. We report herein a case of scorpion bite with electrocardiographic abnormalities simulating early myocardial infarction. Pulmonary edema and congestive heart failure accompanied these electrocardiographic changes as well as serum cardiac markers. The etiology of cardiovascular manifestations in severe scorpion sting is related to venom effect on sympathetic nervous system and the adrenal secretion of catecholamines as well as to the toxic effect of the venom on t

Emergent management of scorpion sting.

Scorpionism (syndrome of scorpion stings) is an important public health problem in many regions of the world, not only in tropics and subtropics. As scorpions may be unintentionally transported to any place in the world and keeping scorpions as pets is becoming more popular, scorpion stings occur also in Poland. Therefore, health professionals should have the knowledge on the management of scorpion stings. This article discusses a case who was stung by scorpion and proposes an algorithm of management with such patients.
