The root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, also called Huangqin, is frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine. In ancient China, S. baicalensis root was used to clear heat, protect the fetus, and avoid a miscarriage for thousands of years. In modern times, pregnancy-related diseases can seriously affect maternal and fetal health, but few systematic studies have explored the mechanisms and potential targets of S. baicalensis root in the treatment of pregnancy-related diseases. Flavonoids (baicalein, wogonin and oroxylin A) and flavonoid glycosides (baicalin and wogonoside) are the main c

BACKGROUND: Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi is a medicinal herb of considerable importance, valued for its roots that are enriched with flavonoids underlying its pharmacological properties. A principal challenge in its commercial cultivation is the simultaneous enhancement of root biomass and the concentration of these active constituents. Although plastic film mulching is a well-established agronomic practice, its application to S. baicalensis and the corresponding molecular regulatory mechanisms remain insufficiently characterized.
METHODS: This study systematically evaluated the effects of

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a ubiquitous sensor of cellular energy and nutrient status in eukaryotic cells. It serves an essential function in the modulation of energy balance and metabolism homeostasis through its regulation of carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism and protein metabolism. The dysregulation of AMPK is closely related to a series of systemic diseases, affecting multiple organs and tissues. Baicalin is a natural compound derived from the dry raw root of Scutellaria baicalensis, and it has been found to exhibit several potential pharmacological actions. These inclu

In the fall of 1998, the Division of Plant Industry (DPI) received vegetative propagations of Scutellaria longifolia (skullcap) with symptoms of foliar mosaic, chlorotic/necrotic ringspots, and wavy line patterns from a nursery in Manatee County. Flexuous particles approximately 500 nm long were found with electron microscopy. The plants tested positive for Papaya mosaic virus (PaMV) in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test with antiserum to PaMV (Agdia, Elkhart, IN). However, in immunodiffusion tests (antiserum from D. Purcifull, University of Florida), this virus gave a reaction

The human lifespan has increased dramatically over the last few decades; however, reaching older age increases the risk of age-related diseases and ailments. To extend the healthspan, many have turned to supplements, including plant-based remedies used in traditional medicine, to promote healthy aging. One of these is Scutellaria lateriflora L. (S. lateriflora), native to North America, which has traditionally been used to treat anxiety, stress, and insomnia. However, clinical trials addressing its effects are very limited. Furthermore, plant material is intrinsically complex, and the preparat

Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (SBG), a traditional Chinese herb, has attracted considerable attention for its wide range of pharmacological activities. This study aimed to investigate the intervention effects of SBG ethanol extract on aging rats induced by D-galactose (D-gal) and to explore potential mechanisms by serum and liver metabolic profiles. The aging rats were induced by the D-gal (100 mg/kg) for 10 weeks continuously with subcutaneous injection, while the control rats received physiological saline. Two other groups of rats were administered with 100 mg/kg/day and 200 mg/kg/day of SB

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has been thought to primarily involve damage to the sensory hair cells of the cochlea via mechanical and metabolic mechanisms. This study examined the effects of baicalin, baicalein, and Scutellaria baicalensis (SB) extract against NIHL in a mouse model. Mice received oral treatment with SB, baicalin, baicalein beginning 30 min prior to noise exposure and continuing once daily throughout the study. Hearing threshold shift was assessed by auditory brain stem responses for 35 days following noise exposure. Central auditory function was evaluated by auditory midd

Radix Scutellariae, a crucial botanical drug widely used in Asian countries, is derived from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi and exhibits diverse pharmacological activities, including antipyretic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, sedative, hypotensive, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, and choleretic effects. Owing to excessive market demand, the wild resources are insufficient, and cultivated Radix Scutellariae has thus become the primary source; however, this shift has resulted in a decline in medicinal quality. To address this quality issue, the present stu

Osteoporosis (OP) is a common systemic bone disease characterized by reduced bone mineral density and the degeneration of the microstructure of bone tissue. Current therapeutic strategies for OP confront limitations including suboptimal efficacy and substantial adverse effects. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of exosomes derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) preconditioned with Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (SBG) for osteoporosis management. Our findings demonstrate that SBG modulates the composition of BMSC-derived exosomes to potentiate osteogenesis. Furt

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The Scutellariae Radix (SR) and Coptidis Rhizoma (CR) herb couple is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions for the treatment of diabetes mellitus due to its interaction and synergistic effect compared to either herb alone, but the underlying mechanism of interaction between these herbs is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of CR on the metabolism and absorption of SR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: After rats were treated with normal saline (NS group) or the CR extract (CR-treated group) for seven consecutive days, the intestinal f
