Discovery of a novel jellyfish venom metalloproteinase inhibitor from secondary metabolites isolated from jellyfish-derived fungus Aspergillus versicolor SmT07.

The major jellyfish stings that occur in China are caused by scyphozoan Nemopilema nomurai, whose venom exhibits significant metalloproteinase activity that contributes to the toxic effects of jellyfish envenomation. Researching effective inhibitors suppressing the metalloproteinase activity of jellyfish venom represents a new attempt to cure jellyfish envenomations. In the present study, secondary metabolites produced by the jellyfish-associated fungus Aspergillus versicolor SmT07 were isolated and evaluated for their anti-proteolytic activities. Two xanthones, sterigmatocystin (JC-01) and ox

A conserved strategy for inducing appendage regeneration in moon jellyfish, Drosophila, and mice.

Can limb regeneration be induced? Few have pursued this question, and an evolutionarily conserved strategy has yet to emerge. This study reports a strategy for inducing regenerative response in appendages, which works across three species that span the animal phylogeny. In Cnidaria, the frequency of appendage regeneration in the moon jellyfish Aurelia was increased by feeding with the amino acid L-leucine and the growth hormone insulin. In insects, the same strategy induced tibia regeneration in adult Drosophila. Finally, in mammals, L-leucine and sucrose administration induced digit regenerat

Bioinspired Long-Lived SLIPS for Synergistic Drag Reduction, Corrosion Protection, and Marine Antifouling.

Biofouling, corrosion, and hydrodynamic drag degrade the marine infrastructure efficiency. Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) offer a promising antifouling strategy, yet are limited by lubricant depletion and lack of active chemical protection. Inspired by the jellyfish Cyanea nozakii (which combines a slippery surface and venom secretion), a nanocellulose-based SLIPS is developed with robust lubricant retention and pH-responsive controlled biocide release. Cellulose nanocrystal porous coatings embedded with chitosan-encapsulated Econea nanocapsules are infused with epoxy-anchored

High vulnerability of jellyfish ephyras (Aurelia aurita) and copepods (Calanoids) to understudied organic UV filters: A multi-trophic ecotoxicological assessment.

Organic ultraviolet filters have become a growing concern in coastal environments, yet our understanding of their toxicity remains surprisingly uneven. While some compounds like benzophenone have been studied extensively, others that are increasingly used in sunscreens such as octisalate (EHS) and ethylhexyl triazone (EHT) have received little attention. Even less is known about how these substances affect marine species that are not part of standard toxicity testing. To address these gaps, this work combined a systematic review following the PRISMA approach with a series of acute toxicity tes

Muscle systems and motility of early animals highlighted by cnidarians from the basal Cambrian.

Although fossil evidence suggests that various animal groups were able to move actively through their environment in the early stages of their evolution, virtually no direct information is available on the nature of their muscle systems. The origin of jellyfish swimming, for example, is of great interest to biologists. Exceptionally preserved muscles are described here in benthic peridermal olivooid medusozoans from the basal Cambrian of China (Kuanchuanpu Formation, ca. 535 Ma) that have direct equivalent in modern medusozoans. They consist of circular fibers distributed over the bell surface

[AN ADULT CASE OF ANAPHYLAXIS CAUSED BY ALLERGY TO JELLYFISH].

A 35-year-old female, professional diver, reported nausea, vomiting, and systemic hives 20 to 30 minutes after ingestion of antipasto made with jellyfish. Patient reported prior episodes of swelling after stings from several different creatures, including jelly fish. She also developed a systemic allergic reaction after sting from an unknown creature while diving. On the initial visit to our hospital, serum total IgE level was 545IU/ml. We extracted crude allergen from jellyfish and evaluated allergen specific IgE antibody levels using ELISA. Patient samples showed higher levels of jellyfish-d

Patterns of inorganic phosphate uptake in Cassiopea xamachana: a bioindicator species.

Nutrient levels in the nearshore waters of the Florida Keys have increased over the past few decades concomitant with a decline in the health of Florida's reef system. Phosphorus is a particular concern in the Florida Keys as it may be the limiting nutrient in nearshore waters. We demonstrate that the upside-down jellyfish, Cassiopea xamachana, decreases its rate of phosphate uptake following exposure to elevated levels of dissolved inorganic phosphate. We also show that this subsequent suppression of uptake rates persists for some time following exposure to elevated phosphates. Using these at

[THE CASE OF A 14-YEAR-OLD BOY WHO EXPERIENCED ANAPHYLAXIS DUE TO JELLYFISH (MASTIGIAS PAPUA) INGESTION].

We report a case of jellyfish allergy diagnosed via an oral food challenge. A 14-year-old boy had no history of jellyfish stings and had been eating commercially available jellyfish products twice yearly for the past 5-6 years. Five minutes after eating a commercially available boiled jellyfish product (100g), he experienced nausea, wheezing, and erythema and had visited our hospital. We suspected an anaphylactic reaction and treated him with intramuscular adrenaline injection, corticosteroid and antihistamine infusions, volume resuscitation, and salbutamol sulfate inhalation, which resulted i

Jellyfish Stings Trigger Gill Disorders and Increased Mortality in Farmed Sparus aurata (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea.

Jellyfish are of particular concern for marine finfish aquaculture. In recent years repeated mass mortality episodes of farmed fish were caused by blooms of gelatinous cnidarian stingers, as a consequence of a wide range of hemolytic, cytotoxic, and neurotoxic properties of associated cnidocytes venoms. The mauve stinger jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (Scyphozoa) has been identified as direct causative agent for several documented fish mortality events both in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea aquaculture farms. We investigated the effects of P. noctiluca envenomations on the gilthead sea

Shape-Based Morphoelasticity for Jellyfish Regeneration.

Many animals exhibit remarkable regenerative abilities, yet the mechanical processes that drive large-scale tissue reshaping remain challenging to characterize. Direct measurements of stress during such remodeling are difficult, while changes in morphology are readily observed. Motivated by wound healing in Clytia jellyfish, we introduce a theoretical framework that infers mechanical stress directly from shape evolution. We model the transformation as a morphoelastic process in quasi-two-dimensional geometry and exploit conformal mappings to obtain analytical expressions for the stress distrib

Screening and optimisation of crude exopolysaccharide production by marine Brevibacterium sp. JAB08 isolated from the jellyfish Chrysaora sp. from the coastal waters of Goa.

Marine jellyfish harbor diverse bacterial communities with potential biotechnological relevance. In this study, eleven bacterial isolates were obtained from different body parts (oral arms, gastric cavity, and mucus) of the jellyfish Chrysaora sp. collected from the coastal waters of Goa, India, and screened for exopolysaccharide (EPS) production. Among the screened isolates, Brevibacterium sp. JAB08 demonstrated the highest crude EPS production potential. Optimisation using a Box-Behnken Design coupled with response surface methodology identified sucrose 3% (w/v), inoculum size 2% (v/v), and

Sea nettle jellyfish venom targets proteoglycans to cause cell death and pain.

Sea nettle jellyfish cause millions of painful stings annually with little known about how their venom works and no rational treatments available. Here, we perform a systematic analysis of sea nettle venom/host interactions. The venom shows dose-dependent cytotoxic activity in human cells, and this can be blocked by dual inhibition of apoptosis and necroptosis. Using whole-genome CRISPR screening, we identified human genes and pathways that modify venom action. The top gene cluster identified regulates proteoglycan biosynthesis. We show that exogenous heparin, a drug used clinically as an anti

Jellyfish Stings: A Review of Skin Symptoms, Pathophysiology, and Management.

With the surge in the human coastal population and the increasing frequency of human activities along the coast, cases of marine envenomation, particularly jellyfish envenomation, have notably risen. Jellyfish stings can induce a spectrum of symptoms that vary in severity, encompassing skin injuries, acute systemic venom effects, delayed indirect sequelae, and even fatality, causing significant distress to patients. Among these manifestations, the occurrence of skin lesions following jellyfish stings is prevalent and substantial. These lesions are characterized by evident blister formation, de

Compartment syndrome following a jellyfish sting: a case report.

BACKGROUND: While the majority of reported cases of jellyfish envenomation are self-limited with few lasting complications, a few can cause life-threatening and debilitating illnesses. We present the case of a 15-year-old male who had an unusual presentation of a jellyfish sting that led to acute compartment syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old Lebanese (Arab) boy was stung by a jellyfish, which led to acute compartment syndrome in the left arm. Decompression fasciotomy and local application of diluted nitroglycerin helped to relieve the ulnar and radial artery spasms. The patient was l

Length Is Associated with Pain: Jellyfish with Painful Sting Have Longer Nematocyst Tubules than Harmless Jellyfish.

A large number of humans are stung by jellyfish all over the world. The stings cause acute pain followed by persistent pain and local inflammation. Harmful jellyfish species typically cause strong pain, whereas harmless jellyfish cause subtle or no pain. Jellyfish sting humans by injecting a tubule, contained in the nematocyst, the stinging organ of jellyfish. The tubule penetrates into the skin leading to venom injection. The detailed morphology of the nematocyst tubule and molecular structure of the venom in the nematocyst has been reported; however, the mechanism responsible for the differe

Localized neuropathy following jellyfish sting.

This report describes the case of an 18 year old female who sustained a jellyfish sting on her right wrist. She subsequently developed complete radial, ulnar and median nerve palsies distal to the site of the sting, which recovered fully over the next 10 months. We believe this to be due to a direct neurotoxic effect of the jellyfish venom.
