Mitigation of anthropogenic greenhouse gases with short lifetimes (order of a year to decades) can contribute to limiting warming, but less attention has been paid to their impacts on longer-term sea-level rise. We show that short-lived greenhouse gases contribute to sea-level rise through thermal expansion (TSLR) over much longer time scales than their atmospheric lifetimes. For example, at least half of the TSLR due to increases in methane is expected to remain present for more than 200 y, even if anthropogenic emissions cease altogether, despite the 10-y atmospheric lifetime of this gas. Sea levels across the planet are rising, particularly along the eastern coast of the United States. Climate-induced sea level rise can result in the inundation and intrusion of seawater into freshwater drainages. This would alter salinity regimes and lead to the salinization of coastal freshwater ecosystems. Increased salinity levels in freshwater can negatively affect freshwater-dependent species, including native mussels belonging to the order Unionida, which are highly sensitive to changes in water quality. Sea salt is largely made up of sodium and chloride ions, forming sodium chloride, a

Coastal areas are of paramount importance due to their pivotal role in facilitating a wide range of socio-economic activities and providing vital environmental services. These areas, as the meeting points of land and sea, face significant risks of flooding due to the ongoing rise in sea levels caused by climate change. Additionally, they are susceptible to extreme events like king tides and large waves in the future. This paper introduces a framework for estimating the extreme total water level (TWL) by considering the effects of regional sea level rise (RSLR) resulting from a warming climate

The ability of reefs to protect coastlines from storm-driven flooding hinges on their capacity to keep pace with sea-level rise. Here, we show how and whether coral restoration could achieve the often-cited goal of reversing the impacts of coral-reef degradation to preserve this essential function. We combined coral-growth measurements and carbonate-budget assessments of reef-accretion potential at Buck Island Reef, U.S. Virgin Islands, with hydrodynamic modeling to quantify future coastal flooding under various coral-restoration, sea-level rise, and storm scenarios. Our results provide guidan

Economic costs of climate change are conventionally assessed at the aggregated global and national levels, while adaptation is local. When present, regionalised assessments are confined to direct damages, hindered by both data and models' limitations. This article goes beyond the aggregated analysis to explore direct and indirect economic consequences of sea level rise (SLR) at regional and sectoral levels in Europe. Using a dynamic computable general equilibrium model and novel datasets, we estimate the distribution of losses and gains across regions and sectors. A comparison of a high-end sc

Current estimates of U.S. property at risk of coastal hazards and sea level rise (SLR) are staggering-evaluated at over a trillion U.S. dollars. Despite being enormous in the aggregate, potential losses due to SLR depend on mitigation, adaptation, and exposure and are highly uneven in their distribution across coastal cities. We provide the first analysis of how changes in exposure (how and when) have unfolded over more than a century of coastal urban development in the United States. We do so by leveraging new historical settlement layers from the Historical Settlement Data Compilation for th

Effects of combined rising sea temperature and increasing sea level on coral reefs, both factors associated with global warming, have rarely been addressed. In this ~40 y study of shallow reefs in the eastern Indian Ocean, we show that a rising relative sea level, currently estimated at ~11 mm y-1, has not only promoted coral cover but also has potential to limit damaging effects of thermally-induced bleaching. In 2010 the region experienced the most severe bleaching on record with corals subject to sea temperatures of >31 °C for 7 weeks. While the reef flats studied have a common aspect and a

The coastal mid-Atlantic region of the United States is increasingly vulnerable to soil salinization, primarily driven by sea-level rise and powerful coastal storms, posing a threat to farmland productivity, and ecological stability. However, the spatially heterogeneous nature of salinization across different land covers makes it challenging to monitor their interactions across large areas and longer time periods. To address this gap, we combined remote sensing-based land cover classification with modeled soil salinity data to assess landscape-scale dynamics across the Delmarva Peninsula from

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike in 2008 in the United States, the "Ike Dike" was proposed as a coastal barrier system, featuring floodgates, to protect the Houston-Galveston area (HGA) from future storm surges. Given its substantial costs, the feasibility and effectiveness of the Ike Dike have been subjects of investigation. In this study, we evaluated these aspects under both present and future climate conditions by simulating storm surges using a set of models. Delft3D Flexible Mesh Suite was utilized to simulate hydrodynamic and wave motions driven by hurricanes, with wind and pressure fi

In coastal urban areas highly susceptible to flooding, whether from sea level rise (SLR) or storms, it is crucial to assess the vulnerability and risks posed by extreme and frequent floods. Reliable estimates of extreme natural events' return periods rely on historical data or probabilistic models, requiring extensive and robust data. From climate-scenario-based or semi-empirical models, SLR projections are represented by a central estimate or the full domain cumulative density function (CDF), entailing uncertainties. Each scenario or projection having its own CDF results in relative probabili

Hurricanes have caused major healthcare system disruptions. No systematic assessment of hurricane risk to United States hospital-based healthcare delivery has been performed. Here, we show that 25 of 78 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) on the United States Atlantic and Gulf Coasts have half or more of their hospitals at risk of flooding from relatively weak hurricanes. 0.82 m of sea level rise expected within this century from climate change increases the odds of hospital flooding 22%. Furthermore, in 18 MSAs at least half of the roads within 1.6 km of hospitals were at risk of flooding f

Climate change is accelerating sea-level rise (SLR), increasing the intensity and frequency of saltwater intrusion, and coastal storm flooding. Areas that are heavily contaminated with pollutants such as arsenic (As) in coastal areas may be influenced by tidal cycles. The effects of seawater intrusion and prolonged flooding will drive chemical and mineralogical changes which may threaten water quality and coastal ecosystem health. We investigated the re-mobilization of As from heavily contaminated urban sediments (13.3 g kg-1 As), over a seawater salinity gradient for 35 d combining anoxic inc

Global climate change-induced sea level rise has emerged as a critical environmental challenge for coastal cities in the 21st century. Shanghai, China's economic, financial, and shipping hub, faces significantly amplified inundation risks in its coastal areas due to the compounding effects of sea level rise, land subsidence, and storm surges. This study constructs a multi-case simulation framework using the sixth assessment report of intergovernmental panel on climate change sea level projection data, land subsidence monitoring records, and historical storm surge data to evaluate the impacts o

Climate change poses great risks to archaeological heritage, especially in coastal regions. Preparing to mitigate these challenges requires detailed and accurate assessments of how coastal heritage sites will be impacted by sea level rise (SLR) and storm surge, driven by increasingly severe storms in a warmer climate. However, inconsistency between modeled impacts of coastal erosion on archaeological sites and observed effects has thus far hindered our ability to accurately assess the vulnerability of sites. Modeling of coastal impacts has largely focused on medium-to-long term SLR, while obse

Salt marshes act as natural barriers that reduce wave energy during storm events and help protect coastal communities located in low-lying areas. This ecosystem can be an important asset for climate adaptation due to its particular capability of vertically accrete to adjust to long-term changes in water levels. Therefore, understanding marsh protection benefits thresholds in the face of sea-level rise (SLR) is important for planning future climate adaptation. In this context, the main goal of this manuscript is to examine how the storm protection benefits provided by salt marshes might evolve

Global warming and sea-level rise exert profound impacts on coastal mangrove ecosystems, where widespread benthic crabs change sediment properties and regulate material cycles. How crab bioturbation perturbs the mobilities of bioavailable arsenic (As), antimony (Sb) and sulfide in sediment-water systems and their variability in response to temperature and sea-level rise is still unknown. By combining field monitoring and laboratory experiments, we found that As was mobilized under sulfidic conditions while Sb was mobilized under oxic conditions in mangrove sediments. Crab burrowing greatly enh

Progression in coastal morphological dynamics over centuries to millennia is associated with severe problems of coastal ecosystems and the sustainability of local coastal communities worldwide. Although coastal management strategies have been implemented in various places to understand regional variations, monitoring a specific phenomenon efficiently remains challenging for researchers. This study documented an in-depth assessment of changing coastal morphodynamics along the Purba Medinipur coastal stretch over 51 years (1972-2023) based on multi-temporal satellite images. The findings suggest

Compound floods are becoming a growing threat in coastal cities against a background of global sea level rise (SLR), and may cause increasing impacts on societal safety and economy. How to quantify the impact of SLR and compound effects among various flood causes on compound flood have become important challenges. We propose a modeling framework which integrates atmospheric, storm tide and urban flood (IASTUF) models to characterize the various physical processes related to compound flood. Future SLR projections under various shared socioeconomic and respective concentration pathway emission s

Extreme sea levels (ESLs) affect coastal ecosystems worldwide. Protection and adaptation strategies rely on the characterization of the extreme's occurrence probability in the future. However, knowledge on the occurrence rate and duration of ESLs is also needed to properly characterize the associated future risk. In this paper, we focus on the Venice lagoon, where a system of storm surge barriers can disconnect the lagoon from the sea to mitigate ESLs. Using long-term (96 years) sea level records, we model occurrence rate and duration of ESLs while accounting explicitly for seasonality and mea

Sea level rise (SLR) threatens coastal ecosystems, critical for sequestering carbon (C), providing habitat, and reducing storm surge. Mangrove forests are particularly efficient in C sequestration and are host to a variety of dependent species. Using United States (U.S.) National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration data, we estimated future mangrove inundation from SLR at 0.3, 0.61, and 3.0 m in the U.S. By 3.0 m of SLR (around the middle of next century), we estimate mangrove area loss to be almost half of current areas, or 47.4% of the approximately 266.7 thousand ha currently present.
