Sea Urchin Granuloma of the Hands: A Case Report.

Penetrating wounds from sea urchin spines are marine injuries that may cause morbidity in humans. Seasonal fishing for abalone in Dhofar is associated with an increase in the number of these injuries, as divers may strike their extremities, especially the dorsum of hands and fingers, on the rocks where Echinoderms and juvenile abalone (Haliotis mariae) are anchored. The immediate effect of injuries includes pain, edema, bleeding, erythema, and rarely systemic complications. There can be a delayed effect in the form of chronic granulomatous skin disease, which is a slow developing reaction to r

Migration of sea urchin primordial germ cells.

BACKGROUND: Small micromeres are produced at the fifth cleavage of sea urchin development. They express markers of primordial germ cells (PGCs), and are required for the production of gametes. In most animals, PGCs migrate from sites of formation to the somatic gonad. Here, we investigated whether they also exhibit similar migratory behaviors using live-cell imaging of small micromere plasma membranes. RESULTS: Early in gastrulation, small micromeres transition from non-motile epithelial cells, to motile quasi-mesenchymal cells. Late in gastrulation, at 43 hr post fertilization (HPF), they ar

Hand injuries from sea urchin spines.

Sea urchin spine injury is usually a benign process that rarely comes to the attention of a physician. Aside from the transient episode of excruciating pain which responds dramatically to hot water soaks, there is usually no residual disability. As in any puncture wound, tetanus prophylaxis and observation for latent infection is advised. Complications arise, however, when spines are embedded over bony prominences, within joints, or in contact with nerves. Cases are reported herein of the latter two problems occurring in the hand. A case of a neuropathy associated with sea urchin injuries has

Phylogeny and expression of axonemal and cytoplasmic dynein genes in sea urchins.

Transcripts approximately 14.5 kilobases in length from 14 different genes that encode for dynein heavy chains have been identified in poly(A)+ RNA from sea urchin embryos. Analysis of the changes in level of these dynein transcripts in response to deciliation, together with their sequence relatedness, suggests that 11 or more of these genes encode dynein isoforms that participate in regeneration of external cilia on the embryo, whereas the single gene whose deduced sequence closely resembles that of cytoplasmic dynein in other organisms appears not to be involved in this regeneration. Population structure and speciation in tropical seas: global phylogeography of the sea urchin Diadema.

The causes of speciation in the sea are rarely obvious, because geographical barriers are not conspicuous and dispersal abilities or marine organisms, particularly those of species with planktonic larvae, are hard to determine. The phylogenetic relations of species in cosmopolitan genera can provide information on the likely mode of their formation. We reconstructed the phylogeny of the pantropical and subtropical sea urchin genus Diadema, using sequences of mitochondrial DNA from 482 individuals collected around the world, to determine the efficacy of barriers to gene flow and to ascertain th

Two New Genera and Species of Polynoidae (Annelida: Polychaeta) Associated with Sea Urchins.

Symbiotic relationships between polychaetes and marine invertebrates are well-documented, with echinoderms-primary starfish and sea cucumbers-as common hosts and sea urchins being more rarely involved. Although many sea urchins possess venomous spines that are effective defenses and make them suitable hosts for symbionts, the dense packing of these spines difficult hosting symbiotic polychaetes. In this study, we describe two new genera and species of polynoid polychaetes found in association with two different species of sea urchins, collected through dredging from Sagami Bay, Japan. Origin and evolutionary plasticity of the gastric caecum in sea urchins (Echinodermata: Echinoidea).

BACKGROUND: The digestive tract of many metazoan invertebrates is characterized by the presence of caeca or diverticula that serve secretory and/or absorptive functions. With the development of various feeding habits, distinctive digestive organs may be present in certain taxa. This also holds true for sea urchins (Echinodermata: Echinoidea), in which a highly specialized gastric caecum can be found in members of a derived subgroup, the Irregularia (cake urchins, sea biscuits, sand dollars, heart urchins, and related forms). As such a specialized caecum has not been reported from "regular" sea

Tropical Achilles Tendinopathy: Sea Urchin Spine Injury.

Sea urchin spine injuries have been reported in the hand and foot, but there are no published cases in the Achilles tendon. We report an unusual case of Achilles tendinopathy secondary to sea urchin spine injury. The patient had Achilles tendon pain that increased over time and was worsened with weightbearing activity. His left ankle plantarflexion was limited by pain. He had received medical care 3 months earlier to remove sea urchin spines after stepping on a long-spined sea urchin. Bedside ultrasound and imaging studies revealed that there were foreign bodies related to sea urchin spines on

Autophagy is required for sea urchin oogenesis and early development.

Autophagy is a major intracellular pathway for the degradation and recycling of cytosolic components. Emerging evidence has demonstrated its crucial role during the embryo development of invertebrates and vertebrates. We recently demonstrated a massive activation of autophagy in Paracentrotus lividus embryos under cadmium stress conditions, and the existence of a temporal relationship between induced autophagy and apoptosis. Although there have been numerous studies on the role of autophagy in the development of different organisms, information on the autophagic process during oogenesis or at

A soluble adenylyl cyclase from sea urchin spermatozoa.

A previously identified, calmodulin-binding, sea urchin sperm flagellar adenylyl cyclase (AC) was cloned and sequenced and found to be a homologue of mammalian sperm soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC). Compared to the mammalian sAC, the sea urchin sAC (susAC) has several long amino acid insertions, some of which contain protein kinase A phosphorylation sites. The enzymatic activity of susAC shows a steep pH dependency curve, the specific activity doubling when the pH is increased from 7.0 to 7.5. This suggests that like sperm dynein ATPase, the susAC is probably activated by increases in intracell

Matrix proteins of the teeth of the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus.

The teeth of the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus grow continuously. The mineral phase, a high magnesium calcite, grows into single crystals within numerous compartments bounded by an organic matrix deposited by the odontoblasts. Electron microscopic examination of glutaraldehyde-fixed Ethylene Diamine Tetra acetic acid (EDTA) demineralized teeth shows the compartment walls to be organized from multiple layers of cell membrane which might contain cytoplasmic protein inclusions. Proteins extracted during demineralization of unfixed teeth were examined by gel electrophoresis, high performance li

Effects of cations on guanylate cyclase of sea urchin sperm.

Mn2+ and to some degree Fe2+, but not Mg+, Ca2+, ba2+, Sr2+, Co2+, Ni2+, La3+, or Fe3+ were able to serve as effective metal cofactors for sea urchin sperm guanylate cyclase. The apparent Michaelis constant for Mn2+ in the presence of 0.25 mM MnGTP was 0.23 mM. In the presence of a fixed free mn2+ concentration, variation in mngTP resulted in sigmoid velocity-substrate plots and in reciprocal plots that were concave upward. These positive cooperative patterns were observed at both pH 7.0 and 7.8 and in the presence or absence of Triton X-100. When Mn2+ and GTP were equimolar, Ca2+, Ba2+, Sr2+,

Morphological adjustments enable sea urchins to sustain calcified structure function under ocean acidification.

Ocean acidification can reduce the size of calcified structures produced by marine calcifiers, raising questions about their competitiveness and persistence in future oceans. Yet, size reduction in calcified structures may represent a plastic response to ocean acidification if these structures remain functional. To test this hypothesis and examine whether morphological plasticity can influence the functionality of calcified structures, we assessed the effects of ocean acidification on the morphological, mechanical and chemical properties of the calcified structures of a sea urchin species prev

The small GTPase Arf6 regulates sea urchin morphogenesis.

The small GTPase Arf6 is a conserved protein that is expressed in all metazoans. Arf6 remodels cytoskeletal actin and mediates membrane protein trafficking between the plasma membrane in its active form and endosomal compartments in its inactive form. While a rich knowledge exists for the cellular functions of Arf6, relatively little is known about its physiological role in development. This study examines the function of Arf6 in mediating cellular morphogenesis in early development. We dissect the function of Arf6 with a loss-of-function morpholino and constitutively active Arf6-Q67L construc

Aquatic antagonists: cutaneous sea urchin spine injury.

Injuries from sea urchin spines are commonly seen in coastal regions with high levels of participation in water activities. Although these injuries may seem minor, the consequences vary based on the location of the injury. Sea urchin spine injuries may cause arthritis and synovitis from spines in the joints. Nonjoint injuries have been reported, and dermatologic aspects of sea urchin spine injuries rarely have been discussed. We present a case of a patient with sea urchin spines embedded in the thigh who subsequently developed painful skin nodules. Tissue from the site of the injury demonstrat
