The ability of predators to adopt hunting tactics that minimise escape reactions from prey is crucial for efficient foraging, and depends on detection capabilities and locomotor performance of both predators and prey. Here, we investigated the efficiency of a small pinniped, the Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) at exploiting their small prey by describing for the first time their fine-scale predator-prey interactions. We compared these with those from another diving predator, the southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) that forage on the same prey type. We used data recorded by a n

The seal louse (Echinophthirius horridus) is a remarkable example of evolutionary adaptation, thriving as an obligate ectoparasite on deep-diving marine mammals under extreme environmental conditions, including high hydrostatic pressure, extreme drag force, salinity, and fluctuating temperatures. To investigate the anatomical and functional specializations enabling this lifestyle, we compared the leg morphology and musculature of E. horridus with its terrestrial relative, the human head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis), using synchrotron-based 3D microtomography and confocal laser scanning mi

Weaned southern elephant seals (SES) quickly transition from terrestrial to aquatic life after a 5- to 6-week post-weaning period. At sea, juveniles and adult elephant seals present extreme, continuous diving behaviour. Previous studies have highlighted the importance of the post-weaning period for weanlings to prepare for the physiological challenges of their future sea life. However, very little is known about how their body condition during this period may influence the development of their behaviour and brain activities. To characterise changes in the behavioural and brain activity of wean

Crack is one of the main diseases of pavement structure. In order to improve the anti-reflective crack ability of pavement, fiber rubber gravel sealing layer is proposed as the stress absorbing layer. In view of the shortcoming that Mcleod design method can not be associated with road performance, a sealing layer optimization design method based on fatigue crack test is proposed. Firstly, the reinforcement effect of fiber on rubber asphalt was studied through force ductility testing. Secondly, the optimum dosage of fiber, asphalt and gravel was optimized through fatigue cracking resistance tes

In this study, we investigate how the terrestrial-aquatic transition influenced patterns of axial integration and modularity in response to the secondary adaptation to a marine lifestyle. We use 3D geometric morphometrics to quantify shape covariation among presacral vertebrae in pinnipeds (Carnivora; Pinnipedia) and to compare with patterns of axial integration and modularity in their close terrestrial relatives. Our results indicate that the vertebral column of pinnipeds has experienced a decrease in the strength of integration among all presacral vertebrae when compared to terrestrial carni

Comparative animal studies of complex behavioural traits, and their neurobiological underpinnings, can increase our understanding of their evolution, including in humans. Vocal learning, a potential precursor to human speech, is one such trait. Mammalian vocal learning is under-studied: most research has either focused on vocal learning in songbirds or its absence in non-human primates. Here, we focus on a highly promising model species for the neurobiology of vocal learning: grey seals (Halichoerus grypus). We provide a neuroanatomical atlas (based on dissected brain slices and magnetic reson

The gross anatomical structure of the ringed seal (Pusa hispida) gastrointestinal tract is poorly described and often veterinary anatomical terminology is not used. Although the basic abdominal visceral pattern corresponded to domestic carnivores, significant differences were noted. The stomach was an elongated sharply bent tube (u-shaped) with the pylorus and fundus juxtaposed. The elongated jejunum measured up to 15.6 times body length and had 37 jejunal arteries from the cranial mesenteric artery. The pancreas was asymmetrical with a small right lobe and a large left lobe. The unusually sho

A new species of cestodes is described from the intestine of Erignathus barbatus Erx. The species differs from the other members of the genus in the shape of scolex, the character of strobilation and in many other characters. Data are given on its morphological variability in different waters: the Greenland and East Siberian Seas, the Bering Strait. Two subspecies, D. s. europeum and D. s. asiaticum, are erected. The species is named in honour of Professor A. S. Skriabin, one of the most outstanding workers in the field of helminthology of marine mammals.

A 22-year-old, intact female harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus), body mass 114 kg, was presented for advanced diagnostic imaging to investigate chronic thoracic limb lameness and intermittent hematuria. To secure vascular access following induction of general anesthesia, a catheter was inserted at the lumbosacral junction and advanced into the extradural intervertebral vein (EDV). The catheter was easily advanced on the third attempt to identify the EDV. Following iodinated contrast medium injection, computed tomography showed that the EDV catheter had wrapped around the spinal cord, resulti

Mycoplasma phocicerebrale, the causative agent of seal ('speck') finger, a zoonotic disease, is a common commensal in the oral cavity of various seal species. Historically associated with seal hunters, it remains a significant risk for those handling or rehabilitating marine mammals. While primarily known for causing severe cellulitis in humans, M. phocicerebrale can also lead to severe infections in seals, including osteomyelitis and sepsis. Recent studies have revealed the predatory behaviour of grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) on harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena). Examination of scarring

Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) have been integral to the development and progress of biologging technology and movement data analysis, which continue to improve our understanding of this and other species. Adult female elephant seals at Año Nuevo Reserve and other colonies along the west coast of North America were tracked annually from 2004 to 2020, resulting in a total of 653 instrument deployments. This paper outlines the compilation and curation process of these high-resolution diving and location data, now accessible in two Dryad repositories. The code used for data pro

The fossil record of pinnipeds documents a suite of morphological changes that facilitate their ecological transition from a terrestrial to an aquatic lifestyle. Among these is the loss of the tribosphenic molar and the behavior typically associated with it in mammals: mastication. Instead, modern pinnipeds exhibit a broad range of feeding strategies that facilitate their distinct aquatic ecologies. Here, we examine the feeding morphology of two species of pinnipeds with disparate feeding ecologies: Zalophus californianus, a specialized raptorial biter, and Mirounga angustirostris, a suction s

The Earth's polar regions are low rates of inter- and intraspecific diversification. An extreme mammalian example is the Arctic ringed seal (Pusa hispida hispida), which is assumed to be panmictic across its circumpolar Arctic range. Yet, local Inuit communities in Greenland and Canada recognize several regional variants; a finding supported by scientific studies of body size variation. It is however unclear whether this phenotypic variation reflects plasticity, morphs or distinct ecotypes. Here, we combine genomic, biologging and survey data, to document the existence of a unique ringed seal

During the uniquely short lactations of true seals, pups acquire a greater proportion of maternal body resources, at a greater rate, than in any other group of mammals. Mothers in many species enter a period of anorexia but must preserve sufficient reserves to fuel hunting and thermoregulation for return to cold seas. Moreover, pups may undergo a period of development after weaning during which they have no maternal care or nutrition. This nutritionally closed system presents a potentially extreme case of conflict between maternal survival and adequate provisioning of offspring, likely present

Brucella species infecting marine mammals was first reported in 1994 and in the years since has been documented in various species of pinnipeds and cetaceans. While these reports have included species that inhabit Arctic waters, the few available studies on bearded seals Erignathus barbatus have failed to detect Brucella infection to date. We report the first isolation of Brucella pinnipedialis from a bearded seal. The isolate was recovered from the mesenteric lymph node of a bearded seal that stranded in Scotland and typed as ST24, a sequence type associated typically with pinnipeds. Furtherm

This is a report of lesions associated with the nematodes (Anisakidae) from the stomach of ringed seals (Pusa hispida). On thirty one examined ringed seals from Arviat, thirteen were infected by 1 to 24 anisakids. Identification of nematodes from their stomachs showed two species; Contracaecum osculatum (sensu lato) (79 specimens) and Pseudoterranova decipiens (sensu lato) (11 specimens). In the gastric sections with parasites, larvae and adults of nematodes were present mainly in the fundic portion of the stomach. The anterior parts of the nematodes were embedded in mucosa and submucosa. Anis

The nasal cavities of mammals contain the maxilloturbinate bones, which are involved in reducing heat and water losses. The maxilloturbinates of Arctic seals develop into particularly elaborate labyrinthine patterns, which are well adapted to retain heat and moisture from exhaled gas. These structures develop prenatally and continue to grow postnatally. The developmental mechanism of labyrinthine patterning is unknown. Here we report a model of maxilloturbinate pattern formation in prenatal and juvenile seals based on a simple algorithmic description and three key parameters: target turbinate

BACKGROUND: Marine mammals act as sentinel species, with top predators' overall health reflecting their ecosystem, integrated across multiple trophic levels. Yet apparently healthy wild animals may have significant subclinical pathology that goes undetected due to unknown medical histories. Marine mammals, particularly phocid seals, often suffer from heavy parasite burdens. While there are documented cases of severe respiratory infections resulting in complications during sedation, there have been no reports of gastrointestinal parasites contributing to poor outcomes during examinations requir
