Role of fine needle aspiration cytology in diagnosis of eyelid sebaceous carcinoma.

Sebaceous carcinoma of the ocular adnexa is a malignant neoplasm which can exhibit aggressive local behavior and can metastasize to regional lymph nodes and distant organs. The neoplasm is known to masquerade as other benign and less malignant lesions, resulting in delay in diagnosis and relative high morbidity and mortality. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of recurrent upper eyelid nodules treated elsewhere as chalazion was done. Cytological smears were suggestive of malignancy. Subsequently histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of sebaceous gland carcinoma. Eyelid reconstruction was

Sebaceous carcinoma of the face following irradiation.

Malignant neoplasms of sebaceous glands are uncommon but generally occur about the head and neck, where these glands are concentrated. The sites of most frequent occurrence are the ocular adnexae, where sebaceous carcinoma presents as an infiltrating malignancy with a poor prognosis. Cutaneous sebaceous carcinoma is rare at other sites but has a better prognosis. We have located eight cases in the literature of sebaceous carcinoma arising in a previously irradiated field: five in the ocular adnexae and three elsewhere on the face. We here report a fourth case of recurrent sebaceous carcinoma w

Adnexal neoplasms of the eye.

Adnexal neoplasms of the eyelid encompass a wide variety of benign and malignant tumors of sebaceous, follicular, and sweat gland origin. Due to the specialized structures of the eyelid, these neoplasms present differently when compared with those of other locations. Although most dermatologists and ophthalmologists are familiar with the commonly reported adnexal tumors of the eyelid, such as hidrocystoma, pilomatrixoma, and sebaceous carcinoma, many other adnexal neoplasms have been reported at this unique anatomic site. Accurate and timely identification of these neoplasms is essential, as a

Sebaceous carcinoma of the vulva.

Extraocular sebaceous carcinoma is an uncommon neoplasm usually localized on the head and neck. Sebaceous glands are abundant on the vulva, but vulvar sebaceous carcinoma is an uncommon neoplasm. To our knowledge, there are only five previously reported cases of sebaceous carcinoma on this location. We report an additional case of vulvar sebaceous carcinoma associated with Bowen's disease in the overlying epidermis. The patient also had bowenoid papulosis involving the skin of labia majora. We analyzed by immunohistochemistry, Southern blot hybridization, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) te

Sebaceous adenoma of the parotid gland: a case report with fine needle aspiration findings and histologic correlation.

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous adenoma of the salivary gland is an extremely rare, benign neoplasm that predominantly involves the major salivary glands. The major problem in dealing with sebaceous adenoma is the recognition of this entity to avoid confusion with other more aggressive neoplasms, such as mucoepidenmoid carcinoma. In particular, recognition of this entity in cytologic specimens is important to avoid radical surgery. CASE: A 29-year-old woman presented with an enlarging parotid mass. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy showed cellular smears composed of sheets and aggregates of cuboidal

Sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is an unusual salivary gland neoplasm which is rarely correctly diagnosed pre-operatively in the parotid gland. Two cases of sebaceous lymphadenoma are presented in which, in common with most cases reported in the literature, the correct pre-operative diagnosis was not made. Sebaceous lymphadenoma rarely transforms into a malignant tumour. Fine needle aspiration cytology identifies a benign process in the majority of patients who receive appropriate treatment on this basis. Although an uncommon tumour, it should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis o

Ectopic sebaceous glands in the oesophagus: a case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Most ectopic sebaceous glands have been reported in the tissues of ectodermal origin. However, there are relatively a few reports of ectopic sebaceous glands in the oesophagus, an organ of endodermal origin. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an asymptomatic 54-year-old man with ectopic oesophageal sebaceous glands. These lesions were incidentally observed in the distal oesophagus during screening endoscopy of gastric neoplasm and confirmed by histologic analysis. CONCLUSION: Surveillance or resection with regard to ectopic sebaceous glands in the oesophagus is generally

Simultaneous Development of Three Different Neoplasms of Trichilemmoma, Desmoplastic Trichilemmoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma Arising from Nevus Sebaceus.

Nevus sebaceus is a hamartoma of the sebaceous gland that occurs congenitally, from which various secondary tumors can arise with a prevalence of 5%-6%. Benign neoplasms commonly arise from nevus sebaceous, but they have a very low malignant potential. Two neoplasms may occasionally arise within the same lesion, but it is rare for three or more neoplasms to occur in a nevus sebaceus simultaneously. A 61-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital for a 4 cm×2.5 cm growing tumor in a verrucous form arising within a periauricular nevus sebaceus in the post auricle of the left ear that had

A unexpected growth arising within nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn.

The predisposition to epithelial neoplasms in nevus sebaceous is well established; most tumors occur in adults and are benign. Hidradenoma is a relatively rare benign tumor of sweat gland origin that can rarely arise within a nevus sebaceous. We present an interesting case of a hidradenoma and sebaceoma arising within a nevus sebaceous and present a literature review of the 2 conditions. Even though hidradenoma is a benign tumor, we would advocate complete excision given the potential for malignant transformation.

Squamous carcinoma of the epiglottis with sebaceous differentiation. Report of a case.

A case of squamous cell carcinoma with sebaceous metaplasia arising in the epiglottis is reported. Extracutaneous neoplasms that show sebaceous differentiation have been mainly described in the major salivary glands. To date only one case of prominent sebaceous differentiation in a carcinoma arising in the vallecula has been reported. In the present paper we describe a similar case arising in the larynx.

Uncommon lymphoepithelial cyst with sebaceous glands of the pancreas.

CONTEXT: Lymphoepithelial cysts with sebaceous glands of the pancreas are extremely rare, with only 7 cases, including this case, published in English literature. CASE REPORT: We herein present the case of a 67-year-old Asian man who underwent a resection of a lymphoepithelial cyst of the pancreas during the follow up care for lung cancer. Fourteen years previously he underwent a right lower lobectomy at the right segment nine for lung cancer. A 20 mm mass in the body of the pancreas was identified by CT scan 4 years ago, and the diagnosis was intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) at

Sebaceous carcinoma of the penis: As aggressive as it is rare.

Malignant neoplasm of the penis is a rare cancer in industrialized countries but is not uncommon in India. Nearly 95% of penile cancer is squamous cell carcinoma. Malignant neoplasms of the sebaceous glands, which are mostly confined to the head and neck region, are even rarer. We present a 74-year-old male with sebaceous cell carcinoma of the penis. He underwent excision of the primary lesion with bilateral inguinal lymph node dissection followed by adjuvant chemotherapy.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma of parotid gland: A case report of a unique presentation in an immunocompromised patient.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare, benign tumor of the parotid gland accounting for only 0.196% of all adenomas of the parotid gland. Our aim is to present a case of sebaceous lymphadenoma, which has been rapidly enlarging over a period of few months in an immunocompromised patient. This presentation is unusual for a benign salivary gland neoplasm. A 55-year-old female who is a known case of systemic lupus erythromatous, antiphospholipid syndrome, and lupus nephritis, which have been treated by cyclophosphamide, presented with a 2-year complaint of fluctuating painless right parotid swelling, o

Isolated primary sebaceous gland carcinoma of the bulbar conjunctiva.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of primary sebaceous gland carcinoma of the bulbar conjunctiva without palpebral involvement. OBSERVATION: A 76-year-old male was referred to the cornea service for a suspicious lesion on the limbal conjunctiva and cornea of his left eye. On exam, there was a large fibrovascular growth with conjunctivalization of the cornea from 2:00 to 10:00 extending 6mm onto the cornea. Patient underwent treatment with 5-fluouracil, followed by excisional biopsy with cryotherapy. Histopathologic examination demonstrated poorly differentiated sebaceous gland carcinoma. Subsequ

Sebaceous carcinoma of scalp with proliferating trichilemmal cyst.

Sebaceous carcinoma is a rare neoplasm of the sebaceous gland. It is diagnosed mainly on histopathology and, clinically, it may mimic other neoplasms like squamous or basal cell carcinoma. We came across a patient presenting with a non-healing ulcer over the left temporo-parietal region of the scalp since 4 years and a single asymptomatic nodule over the occipital region since 3 years. Histopathology from an ulcer was pathognomonic of sebaceous carcinoma and that from a nodule was suggestive of proliferating trichilemmal cyst. The patient was screened for Muir Torre syndrome. We referred the p

Sebaceoma of the Eyelid Originating in a Meibomian Gland: A Rare Case and Literature Review.

Sebaceoma is an infrequently diagnosed benign neoplasm with sebaceous differentiation. This tumor usually presents in areas rich in sebaceous glands, such as the face, scalp, or trunk. The periocular tissues are an exceptionally uncommon site for sebaceoma, making sebaceoma of the eyelid an extremely rare entity. To our knowledge, only five cases of sebaceoma of the eyelid have been reported, with only one of these five originating in a Meibomian gland. Due to its rarity and the wide spectrum of skin lesions, sebaceoma is considered a diagnostically challenging lesion. When the diagnosis is un

Clear cell hidradenoma associated with the folliculo-sebaceous-apocrine unit. Histologic study of five cases.

Hidradenomas are benign adnexal neoplasms of uncertain derivation. Although most investigators traditionally have considered these neoplasms to exhibit eccrine differentiation, with only occasional reports supporting apocrine derivation, subdivision of hidradenomas into two groups was recently suggested: those with eccrine differentiation (or poroid hidradenomas) and those exhibiting apocrine differentiation (or clear cell hidradenomas). We have observed five cases of clear cell hidradenomas manifesting unquestionable apocrine characteristics excised from sites other than the axilla, and displ

[Clinical follow-up and presence of visceral tumors in 12 patients with sebaceous gland tumors].

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous gland tumors are a rare type of neoplasm. In some cases they have been associated with visceral tumors in patients with Muir-Torre syndrome, a hereditary form of nonpolyposis colorectal cancer. The aim of this study was to review the diagnosis and follow-up of a series of patients with sebaceous gland tumors to assess how many met the criteria for Muir-Torre syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A search was performed of records from 1990 to 2005 in the database of the Department of Dermatology of the Consorcio Hospital General Universitario de Valencia in Valencia, Spain, to

Sebaceous Lymphadenoma: Radiology-Pathology Correlation.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare salivary gland neoplasm most commonly occurring in the sixth to eighth decades of life. Cross sectional imaging typically demonstrates a multicystic expansile mass, most commonly occurring in the parotid gland, where the radiographic differential diagnosis would include Warthin tumor in this location and age group. Ultimately, the diagnosis is confirmed with the histopathologic findings of tubuloglandular epithelial profiles with sebaceous differentiation and cystic change set within a dense, benign lymphocytic infiltrate. These features are exemplified in this
