Lung cancer disparities in rural, persistent poverty counties: a secondary data analysis.

BACKGROUND: In the US, lung cancer burden is greater in counties that are either rural or in persistent poverty. This study examined lung cancer risk (e.g., smoking), incidence, and mortality across four county types defined by cross-classification of rurality and persistent poverty. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of county characteristics and lung cancer risk, incidence and mortality. We used data from USDA to classify counties according to rurality (using rural-urban continuum codes) and persistent poverty (i.e., 20% + of residents living below the poverty line for 30 + years).

Piloting a data dashboard to support data-informed health promotion in secondary schools: qualitative analysis of stakeholder interviews.

BACKGROUND: Schools are called upon to use data-informed practice to support student health and well-being. However, they face implementation challenges including data accessibility and literacy. Data dashboards offer a method to address these challenges, thereby promoting data-informed practice. This paper reports on a pilot of The School Health Research Network Data Dashboard with secondary schools. METHODS: The Dashboard was piloted by three secondary schools (recruited by size; free school meal entitlement) in Wales, UK. Interviews with school staff (N = 7) and public health practitioners

Pre-pregnancy body mass index and low birthweight: Secondary data analysis using health insurance claims data in Japan.

AIM: For women, being underweight increases their susceptibility to osteoporosis, anemia, and other conditions and affects the weight of their infants and the well-being of future generations. This study examined the association between low pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and low birthweight using health insurance claims data and health checkup data, including weight measurements. METHODS: We used health insurance claims data and health checkup data (JMDC, Tokyo, Japan) of women and their newborns in Japan between 2006 and 2020. We used checkup data, which included more accurate weight me

Distinguishing potential bacteria-tumor associations from contamination in a secondary data analysis of public cancer genome sequence data.

BACKGROUND: A variety of bacteria are known to influence carcinogenesis. Therefore, we sought to investigate if publicly available whole genome and whole transcriptome sequencing data generated by large public cancer genome efforts, like The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), could be used to identify bacteria associated with cancer. The Burrows-Wheeler aligner (BWA) was used to align a subset of Illumina paired-end sequencing data from TCGA to the human reference genome and all complete bacterial genomes in the RefSeq database in an effort to identify bacterial read pairs from the microbiome. Descriptive spatial analysis of the cholera epidemic 2008-2009 in Harare, Zimbabwe: a secondary data analysis.

This ecological study describes the cholera epidemic in Harare during 2008-2009 and identifies patterns that may explain transmission. Rates ratios of cholera cases by suburb were calculated by a univariate regression Poisson model and then, through an Empirical Bayes modelling, smoothed rate ratios were estimated and represented geographically. Mbare and southwest suburbs of Harare presented higher rate ratios. Suburbs attack rates ranged from 1.2 (95% Cl = 0.7-1.6) cases per 1000 people in Tynwald to 90.3 (95% Cl = 82.8-98.2) in Hopley. The identification of this spatial pattern in the sprea

Fronto-Parietal EEG asymmetry interactions predict negative attention bias: A secondary data analysis.

Attention bias (AB), the excessive attentional selection of certain stimuli over others, is found in individuals suffering from depression. Similarly, alpha asymmetries, the lateralization of inhibitory cortical activity in the EEG alpha band (8-13 Hz) have been linked to depression and motivational direction. By contrasting novel and more reliable AB metrics against alpha asymmetries in an exploratory data analysis, we aimed to examine whether hemispheric differences are associated with AB scores, which could in turn refine the current model of AB metrics. Fifty nonclinical females, aged 18-3

Trends of stillbirths in Harare City, Zimbabwe, 2015-2019: a secondary data analysis.

INTRODUCTION: in Zimbabwe, perinatal mortality is a major public health problem. Harare City data showed increase in stillbirth rate trend from 4/1000 live births in 2014 to 6/1000 live births in 2018, failing to meet the country's target of reducing stillbirth rate by 40%. We analysed the characteristics of stillbirths from 2015 to 2019 in Harare City. METHODS: we conducted a retrospective analytical cross-sectional study using secondary data from Harare City Health Department's 12 baby-delivery polyclinics. Fourteen key informants were interviewed to verify information obtained. Using Epi-i

Secondary Malignancies in Patients with Meningioma: A Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Data Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The risk of secondary primary malignancies (SPMs) in meningioma patients is not well understood. In this unidirectional analysis, we evaluated the risk of SPMs occurring following a primary diagnosis of meningioma. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER-17) database (2000-2020) was used to identify 124,769 meningioma patients from a total of 9,208,295 cancer cases. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated using SEER's statistical analysis package to evaluate SPM risk. Basic demographic and treatment information was collected as well. RESULTS: O

Prior transplantation and idecabtagene vicleucel in multiple myeloma: a secondary analysis of CIBMTR data.

Recent analyses have suggested a possible negative impact of prior autologous stem cell transplantation on outcomes with idecabtagene vicleucel (ide-cel) chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy in relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. Our registry-based analysis of >800 ide-cel recipients did not identify any such association.

Helicobacter pylori infection and hypochlorhydria in Zambian adults and children: A secondary data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hypochlorhydria (gastric pH >4) increases susceptibility to diarrhoea, iron deficiency, and gastric cancer. We sought to clarify the prevalence of this condition and its predisposing factors in Zambia by pooling data from previous studies conducted in hospital and community settings. METHODS: Gastric pH was measured in participants from five separate studies by collecting gastric aspirate from fasted adults and children under 3 years of age undergoing gastroscopy. Gastric pH was correlated with serological testing for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Helicobacter pylori (H.

Sporadic Adenoma Detection During Routine IBD Colonoscopies: A Secondary Analysis of Prospectively Collected Data.

BACKGROUND: In colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, colonoscopy quality is assessed by sporadic adenoma detection and withdrawal time (WT). In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), withdrawal is more complex due to IBD-specific tasks, such as targeted biopsies, dysplasia surveillance, and segmental inflammatory activity assessment. We hypothesized that in screening-age IBD patients in endoscopic remission, the yield of sporadic adenomas would be similar to that observed in non-IBD patients. We aimed to test this hypothesis recognizing that current quality benchmarks are extrapolated from non-IBD scr

Impact of COVID-19 Social Distancing Mandates on Gastrointestinal Pathogen Positivity: Secondary Data Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acute gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses are of the most common problems evaluated by physicians and some of the most preventable. There is evidence of GI pathogen transmission when people are in close contact. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the sudden implementation of widespread social distancing measures in the United States. There is strong evidence that social distancing measures impact the spread of SARS-CoV-2, and a growing body of research indicates that these measures also decrease the transmission of other respiratory pathogens. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the i
