Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in mixed anxiety-depression.

The overlap between the depressive and anxiety disorders is extremely common. The introduction of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) has, more than any other development, bridged the gap in terms of efficacy in both sets of disorders. A substantial body of data exists suggesting that the available SSRIs have substantial efficacy in anxiety symptoms co-occurring with depression. The clear utility of the SSRIs in disorders classified apart from depression is also established. Whilst panic disorder is the best studied, evidence on the efficacy of the SSRIs in disorders that previ

[Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor(SSRI)].

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs) are safe antidepressants and now widely used for the treatment of depression. Although there are five SSRIs(citalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline) available in the world, only two(fluvoxamine and paroxetine) are approved in Japan. SSRIs are also used for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorders, panic disorders, eating disorders and so on. Major side effects of SSRIs are gastrointestinal symptoms(especially nausea), neurological symptoms (particularly headache and tremor) and psychiatric symptoms(especially anxiety). W

[Serotonin syndrome with fatal outcome caused by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors].

The serotonin syndrome is a rare, but potentially fatal complication to treatment with serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Due to increasing prescription of these drugs the condition must be expected to occur more often. Symptoms include changes in mental status (confusion, agitation and restlessness), neuromuscular symptoms (shivering, ataxia, myoclonus and hyperreflexia) and autonomic dysfunction (fever, diaphoresis, hypertension and tachycardia). The syndrome is most often produced by concurrent use of two or more drugs that enhance serotonin neurotransmission. Monotherapy may also elicit the sy

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) for the prevention of migraine in adults.

BACKGROUND: This is an updated version of the original Cochrane review published in 2005 on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for preventing migraine and tension-type headache. The original review has been split in two parts and this review now only regards migraine prevention. Another updated review is under development to cover tension-type headache.Migraine is a common disorder. The chronic forms are associated with disability and have a high economic impact. In view of discoveries about the role of serotonin and other neurotransmitters in pain mechanisms, selective serotonin

Effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on the placenta†.

The rate of depression in pregnant mothers has dramatically risen in the past few decades. One of the well-studied causes of depression is a deficiency of serotonin (5-HT) in the synaptic cleft of neurons in the central nervous system, called the serotonergic theory of depression. The serotonin transporter (SERT/SLC6A4) binds 5-HT such that it can no longer bind and activate its cognate receptors on the post-synaptic neurons. Greater number of pregnant women are prescribed a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drug to combat depression. These compounds act to bind to SERT, and thereb

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs): Effects on male fertility.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors are the most prescribed class of medications in cases of depression. This article discusses the main findings on their effects on male fertility, considering semen parameters and sperm function. This systematic review of the literature delves into the adverse effects of the main SSRIs on male fertility. The software package PRISMA was used to organize the search using keywords related to the research question. The search yielded a total of 125 studies. After the abstracts were read, 18 articles were selected for further analysis. The review ultimately in

Genotyping of patients treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are used by over 180,000 people in Norway. The enzymes CYP2D6 and CYP2C19 are key in the metabolism of SSRI antidepressants. The serotonin transporter coded by SLC6A4 may be significant for the efficacy of the drugs. MATERIAL AND METHOD: All patients who had undergone genotyping for CYP2D6, CYP2C19 and SLC6A4 at the Centre for Psychopharmacology in 2020 were included, irrespective of indication. For those patients where data were available, CYP2C19 genotype was linked to serum concentration measurement of escitalopram, which is the m

Milnacipran and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in major depression.

In drug development the move from tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) involved not only the loss of the direct receptor interactions responsible for the adverse side effects of TCAs, but also the ability to inhibit the reuptake of noradrenaline. Selectivity for the single neurotransmitter, serotonin, may explain why SSRIs tend to be less efficacious than the TCAs, especially in more serious forms of depression. The advent of selective serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) has tended to confirm the idea that an action on both mon

Comparative safety and tolerability of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have the best established tolerance and safety profile of the available antidepressants. Evidence for this conclusion comes from controlled clinical trials, post-marketing surveillance, prescription audits and case reports. Comparative studies are sparse within the class of SSRIs, and methodological differences between studies are problematic, yet certain differences emerge in tolerability when comparing placebo-adjusted incidence rates for the most common adverse events. Fluoxetine commonly produces nervousness, anxiety, insomnia and headach

Off-label Uses of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs).

Psychiatric drugs have primacy for off-label prescribing. Among those, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are highly versatile and, therefore, widely prescribed. Moreover, they are commonly considered as having a better safety profile compared to other antidepressants. Thus, when it comes to off-label prescribing, SSRIs rank among the top positions. In this review, we present the state of the art of off-label applications of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, ranging from migraine prophylaxis to SARS-CoV-2 antiviral properties. Research on SSRIs provided significant evidence

Enhanced responsiveness to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors during lactation.

The physiology of mood regulation in the postpartum is poorly understood despite the fact that postpartum depression (PPD) is a common pathology. Serotonergic mechanisms and their dysfunction are widely presumed to be involved, which has led us to investigate whether lactation induces changes in central or peripheral serotonin (5-HT) systems and related affective behaviors. Brain sections from lactating (day 10 postpartum) and age-matched nulliparous (non-pregnant) C57BL/6J mice were processed for 5-HT immunohistochemistry. The total number of 5-HT immunostained cells and optical density were

The adverse skeletal effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a widely used group of antidepressants (ADs) with reported potential detrimental effects on bone mineral density (BMD) and increased fracture risk. Here, a comprehensive review of the in vitro, in vivo and clinical studies to date was carried out using the medical search engines MEDLINE (1950 to September 2010) and EMBASE (1980 to September 2010). Serotonin (5-HT) receptors have been identified on osteoclast, osteoblast and osteocyte cell lines. The effect of SSRIs on bone formation and resorption appears to be governed by the activation of a

[Galactorrhoea and the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors].

The subject of this case study is a female patient who was treated with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), citalopram, because of a depressive episode. She developed symptoms of galactorrhea; there was a time relationship between suspension of the treatment with citalopram and a reduction of the galactorrhea symptoms. The consulting internist assumed that the symptoms were due to hyperprolactinemia arising from under-supplementation of thyroid hormone and resultant hypothyroidism. Psychiatrists usually see galactorrhea in patients who are taking antipsychotics. However, few psych

Risks associated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on pregnancy outcome. METHODS: We performed a population-based study of women exposed to SSRIs during pregnancy (n = 1782). Data were derived from a national project in Finland, established by 3 governmental organizations. In that project, the Drug Reimbursement Register, the Medical Birth Register, the Register of Congenital Malformations, and the Register of Induced Abortions have been linked. Comparisons were made between women with SSRI purchases to matched controls and between women with purchases in diffe

Utility of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in premature ejaculation.

The introduction of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) has revolutionized our understanding of the treatment of premature ejaculation. Lifelong premature ejaculation may be a neurobiological phenomenon, namely part of a biological variability of the intravaginal ejaculation latency time in men. Animal studies support this view, and an animal model for premature and delayed ejaculation has recently been developed. It is proposed that drug treatment of premature ejaculation should consist of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)2c receptor stimulation and/or 5-HT1A receptor inhibition. A meta-
