Self-compassion, palliative care self-efficacy, and spiritual care preparedness among nursing students: a cross-sectional study.

Preparing nursing students to deliver holistic palliative care requires both clinical competence and readiness to address patients' spiritual needs. Spiritual care preparedness may be associated with psychological resources and educational experiences; however, these relationships remain insufficiently understood, particularly in culturally specific contexts such as Saudi Arabia. To examine the associations among self-compassion, palliative care self-efficacy, and spiritual care preparedness among nursing students, and to explore whether palliative care self-efficacy demonstrates a cross-secti

Self-Report of Child Care Directors Regarding Return-to-Care.

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) introduced revised return-to-care recommendations for mildly ill children in 2009 that were added to national standards in 2011. Child care directors' practices in a state without clear emphasis on return-to-care guidelines are unknown. We investigated director return-to-care practices just before the release of recently revised AAP guidelines. METHODS: A telephone survey with 5 vignettes of mild illness (cold symptoms, conjunctivitis, vomiting/diarrhea, fever, and ringworm) was administered to randomly sampled directors in metropolitan Mil

Self-care in patients affected by inflammatory bowel disease and caregiver contribution to self-care (IBD-SELF): a protocol for a longitudinal observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Supporting patient self-care and the contribution of their caregivers is crucial in chronic illness care. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition whose prevalence is expected to double, especially in Western countries. IBD symptoms can negatively impact patients' well-being, causing high anxiety, depression, stress and reduced quality of life. These symptoms also affect the health of family members and friends, who often take on caregiving roles during exacerbations. Knowledge about self-care in IBD (IBD-SELF) is limited, and few studies have explored this context

Phenomenological perspectives on self-care in aging.

Self-care is a central concept in health care and may be considered as a means to maintain, restore, and improve one's health and well-being. When performed effectively, self-care contributes not only to human functioning but also to human structural integrity and human development (ie, to a dynamic and holistic state of health). Self-care as a clinical concept is relevant for health care professionals, and it should be meaningful to investigate it at a philosophical level and to further elaborate upon this concept. The aim of this article is to discuss and elaborate upon a phenomenological pe

[Complementary Therapy: Application of Photobiomodulation in Self-Care and Patient Care].

Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as low-level laser therapy, is a non-invasive light therapy that applies near-infrared light sources near target tissues. PBM allows photons to penetrate tissues and interact with cells, promoting photophysical and chemical changes that result in desired changes at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels (Oliveira et al., 2022; Shetty et al., 2023). This complementary therapy has garnered significant research attention both domestically and internationally. The results of recent research indicate non-invasive transcranial light stimulation can enhance hi

Children with cancer and their parents: self-care and dependent-care practices.

In this qualitative study the self-care practices of children with cancer and the dependent-care practices of their parents were examined. These practices were organized according to self-care requisites presented in Orem's theory of self-care. The intent of this examination was to determine the competency of participants, identify where self-care deficits occurred, and decide what nursing interventions were needed. A purposive sample of 9 children and 18 parents were interviewed to determine their experiences with cancer. Content analysis was conducted using a deductive approach to code and a

Self-care and the doctor-patient relationship.

OBJECTIVES: An important factor contributing to the steep rise in health care costs in the late 1960s was a reversal from the predominance of acute illness to that of chronic disease. Beginning with the philosophy of Illich and Levin, and the practical instruments of Fries, Sehnert, Vickery, and Ferguson, a new movement in patient self-care emerged. However, such programs were not integrated into organized medical care plans and though theoretically attractive had not yet proven to improve health or decrease costs. METHODS: The contributions to the self-care movement made under the intellectu

Nursing care of the self-mutilating patient.

Self-mutilative behavior is common among patients with multiple personality and other dissociative disorders. Nursing staff members face particular challenges in managing these patients because one act of self-mutilation can disrupt the entire inpatient milieu. The authors present an approach to nursing care that focuses on working with patients to understand and develop a specific plan to curtail the self-mutilative behavior.

Promoting intermittent self-catheterisation to encourage self-care in district nursing patients.

Intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC) is deemed the preferred option for the management of urinary incontinence and/or retention in patients requiring a catheter. It also allows patients to self-care, thereby placing fewer demands on district nursing (DN) services and meeting the requirements of the current health policy agenda. Yet many patients who could benefit from ISC in the community still use a long-term urinary catheter. This may contribute to increased morbidity, poorer quality of life, and unnecessary visits from the DN team. This article analyses the role of the district nurse in

Self-care of Frontline Health Care Workers: During COVID-19 Pandemic.

The world is amidst the COVID-19 pandemic that has used social distancing as a tool for containing the virus from spreading exponentially among other individuals. Previous literature suggests that human contact and attachment is a key for well-being which is why punishments like solitary confinement in detention centers like jail has always been debated as being torturous (Wolfendal 2020). With this notion, anxiety and stress may become more prevalent in individuals who experience self-isolation or are under a forced lockdown. For health-care workers like doctors and psychologists, who advocat

Self-care in primary care: findings from a longitudinal comparison study.

AIM: To examine the effects of self-care training workshops for primary healthcare workers on frequently attending patients. BACKGROUND: Interventions to promote self-care in frequent users of primary care services have had mixed results. This paper reports an evaluation of a self-care initiative that aimed to develop a practice-based strategy to support self-care. METHODS: A 12-month longitudinal-matched comparison study was carried out in seven intervention and four comparison practices. The intervention was a multidisciplinary training package delivered to Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) and p

The Role of Self-Care for Parents in Recovery From Substance Use Disorders: An Integrative Review of Parental Self-Care.

BACKGROUND: Lack of stress modifiers, such as self-care behaviors (SCBs), can increase vulnerability to drug use for parents in recovery from substance use disorders (SUDs). PURPOSE: The purpose of this integrative review was to determine how the existing literature describes, conceptualizes, and measures SCB for parents in the general population for its application to parents with a history of SUD. METHODS: Framed by Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory of Substance Abuse, four qualitative and five quantitative studies identify SCB, although only one study describes SCB of parents in recovery.

Self assessment exercises in Intensive Care Medicine.

Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) is no longer the exclusive preserve of anaesthetists as both emergency medicine and general medicine trainees now also train in this increasingly important speciality. This edition of the JRAMC self assessment question series serves to cover some of the current 'hot topics' in ICM and enables readers with experience of ICM to test their knowledge as well as educating junior trainees in relevant subjects that they may be unfamiliar with. Similarly, the Focus On .... series of papers elsewhere in this journal demonstrate the increasing importance of ICM in the deplo
