This paper describes an alternative approach to measuring the self that directly accounts for the way individuals ruminate on their external actions in order to inform and maintain their self-image. This was achieved by designing the Relational Self-Concept Scale (RSCS), a measure that explores the role and impact that different social encounters within and around the school context have upon self-concept formation. Analysis of responses to this context-specific self-report measure, obtained from a large sample of adolescents (N = 978), confirmed that the scale is multidimensional, possesses a

In 4 studies we examined the relationship between self-concept clarity and conflict management. Individuals with higher self-concept clarity were overall more active and showed more cooperative problem-solving behavior than people with low self-concept clarity. There were no relationships with contending or yielding. The positive relationship with cooperative behavior was mediated by less rumination (Study 2) and moderated by conflict intensity (Study 3). Specifically, it applied to relatively mild conflicts (Study 3). Finally, Study 4 extended these findings to the group level: Dyad members w

OBJECTIVES: Communicative disorders can complicate social interactions and may be detrimental for one's self-concept. This study aims to assess the self-concept of children with Cochlear Implants (CI). Results of educational peer groups (special needs or typical) were compared. Correlations amongst speech perception, language comprehension, self-concept and other study variables are determined.
METHODS: This retrospectively patient file study contained 53 CI participants with a mean age of 14.2 (SD = 2.8). Self-concept was measured with the Dutch language version of the Self-Perception Profil

Over the last several decades, the self-concept has been implicated as a important determinant of eating disorders (ED). Although considerable progress has been made, questions remain unanswered about the properties of self-concept that distinguish women with an ED from other populations, and mechanisms that link the self-concept to the disordered behaviors. Markus's self-schema model is presented as a theoretical approach to explore the role of the self-concept in ED. To show how the schema model can be integrated with existing work on the self-concept in ED, a framework is proposed that addr

Self-concept and adjustment data from anatomical males seeking sexual reassignment surgery were compared with that from a male homosexual group. Findings indicated that the homosexual group had a better self-image and was better adjusted than the sex change group. Other findings are presented that reinforce the view that the norm violations in homosexuality and transsexualism do not necessarily imply serious character damage.

The diagnosis of epilepsy can lead to changes in the patient's perception due to factors such as learning and behavioral problems, lack of academic motivation, and low self-esteem. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the knowledge of self-concept in children with epilepsy and those with typical development and verify whether gender and age influence this perception. Eighty children of both sexes, aged between 8 and 14years, participated in this study. The children were divided into two groups: the epilepsy group, which consisted of 40 children diagnosed with epilepsy, and the control grou

BACKGROUND: Common self-assessment questionnaires on voice diagnostics focus mostly on functionality of the voice and the impact on the quality of life. Personal aspects such as the relationship with one's own voice and its self-perception are for the most part not taken into consideration.
OBJECTIVES: In this article a questionnaire for the assessment of the voice self-concept (Fragebogen zur Erfassung des stimmlichen Selbstkonzepts, FESS) is introduced.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reliability and validity were tested with a sample of 308 student teachers. For external validity, the scales were

This investigation examined the relationship of the self-concept of children with cleft lip and/or palate to the self-concept of noncleft children. Thirty-four cleft lip and/or palate children between the ages of 11 and 13 were individually matched with thirty-four noncleft school children. Each child was given the Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Scale. Children with clefts, regardless of sex, reported a significantly greater dissatisfaction with physical appearance. A significant interaction effect between sex and presence or absence of cleft was found on three cluster scores with cleft

Chronic tic disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by the presence of motor and/or phonic tics and often accompanied by co-morbid behavioral problems. Chronic tic disorders can negatively affect the level of functioning of young patients across social and family domains, with possible repercussions on their self-perception. We conducted a systematic literature review to assess the clinical correlates of both components of self-perception (self-concept, i.e. what patients think about themselves, and self-esteem, i.e. how they feel about their self-concept) in patients with ch

Adolescence is characterized by physical and psychological changes and is a time when crises and mental health issues are prone to occur. For adolescents in mental health treatment, self-engagement is essential for recovery. This recovery process is characterized by the improvement of psychological well-being and the restoration of active participation in one's life. Thus, this study aims to clarify the conceptual structure of adolescents' self-engagement in mental health treatment and to explore its implications for nursing practice. Using Rodgers and Knafl's concept analysis approach, this s

BACKGROUND: Mid-adolescence is an important phase of self-development in various domains including academics as well as for changes in the neural mechanisms underlying the self-concept. Students' academic self-concept (ASC) is affected by educational achievements and social others (such as teachers and peers). To what extent these external influences relate to neural dynamics during adolescents' self- and other-evaluations (i.e. of friends and teachers) which affect ASC over time is currently unclear.
AIMS: The current study aimed to address the question of to what extent the developing ASC i

Background: Skeletal malocclusion is common among populations. Its severity often increases during adolescence, yet it is frequently overlooked. The introduction of deep learning in stomatology has opened a new avenue for self-health management. Methods: In this study, networks were trained using lateral photographs of 2109 newly diagnosed patients. The performance of the models was thoroughly evaluated using various metrics, such as sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, confusion matrix analysis, the receiver operating characteristic curve, and the area under the curve value. Heat maps were gen

Three studies using independent samples of bereaved individuals were conducted to examine the association of self-concept clarity (SCC) with symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), a debilitating syndrome than can develop after bereavement. Study 1 (N = 67) showed that lower SCC was associated with greater PGD severity, independent from self-concept content change. Using a retrospective design, Study 2 (N = 116) showed that a loss can coincide with a decline in SCC, the magnitude of which was associated with acute PGD severity. Study 2 also showed that the maintenance of PGD symptoms over

Although numerous studies have examined the families of bulimic individuals, none have explicitly addressed how family factors relate to self-concept among patients with bulimia. This study used L. Benjamin's' structural analysis of social behavior (1974) rating scales to assess how perceptions of parental relationships relate to self-concept. The results indicate that female patients with bulimia perceive both parents as hostilely disengaged. Furthermore, the self-concepts of patients with bulimia were significantly associated with perceptions of paternal attack/friendliness, which differenti

Self-acceptance as a correlation between real and ideal self-concept distinguishes neurotic patients from paranoid schizophrenic patients. This fact may support the hypothesis that these groups of patients are characteristic of different personality traits.

BACKGROUND: How we build and maintain representations of ourselves involves both explicit features which are consciously accessible on reflection and implicit processes which are not, such as attentional biases. Understanding relations between different ways of measuring self-cognition both within and across such cognitive domains is important for understanding how selves may differ from one another, and whether self-cognition is best understood as largely uni-dimensional or more multi-dimensional. Further, uncovering this structure should inform research around how self-cognition relates to p

Symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar disorder (BD) often overlap. In some cases, it is difficult to conduct a differential diagnosis based only on current diagnostic criteria Therefore, it is important to find clinical factors with high discriminatory specificity that, used together with structured or semi-structured interviews, could help improve diagnostic practice. We propose that a clinical analysis of identity, self-concept and self-esteem may help distinguish the two disorders, when they are not co-morbid. Our review of the studies that analyse these constructs i

Self-performed ultrasound is an emerging technology that facilitates adept self-scans in untrained hands. Inspired by self-performed imaging in space for more prompt diagnosis and therapy, it has the potential to accurately monitor chronic conditions remotely. However, the lack of supervision and physical restraints can hinder its usability. This scoping review was guided by the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis and the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Six databases and two grey literature platforms were searched. There were no restrictions on publication year or country, provided that there was full-tex
