Vulnerable self-disclosure co-develops in adolescent friendships: Developmental foundations of emotional intimacy.

This study examines the development of vulnerable self-disclosure in supportive interactions from ages 13 to 29. A diverse community sample (N = 184; 85 boys 99 girls; 58% white, 29% Black, 13% other identity groups) participated in annual observed interactions with close friends and romantic partners. Participants were observed as they sought and provided support to their best friends each year from age 13 to 18, and as they sought support from their romantic partners from age 19 to 29. Random intercept cross-lagged panel models were used to parse markers of within-individual change in vulner

Assessment of noncompliance in self-disclosure of deferrable risk behaviors among blood donors.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion services work to ensure universal accessibility of safe and effective blood products for transfusion to recipients. Failure of blood donors to disclose complete truthful information before blood donation is termed as noncompliance. Noncompliance in disclosing high-risk behaviors could compromise blood safety. This study aimed to assess the prevalence rate of noncompliance and assess the predictive factors and reasons for noncompliance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood donors were asked to fill a postdonation anonymous questionnaire after obtaining consent and the res

Male self-disclosure of HIV-positive serostatus to sex partners: a review of the literature.

HIV-positive men face multiple challenges when deciding whether to disclose their serostatus to sex partners. The purpose of this literature review (1996-2004) is to identify valid and reliable research results that identify factors influencing serostatus disclosure to sex partners by men who are HIV-positive. Articles included in the review were identified through an electronic search using pertinent terms related to disclosure to sex partners, followed by a search of references for additional articles. A compilation of research results for 17 articles is presented under the headings of backg

Do you have a minute? The cognitive and emotional consequences of self-disclosures at work.

People spend significant time at work talking with coworkers. Yet surprisingly little is known about how these conversations impact their emotional lives. We addressed this issue across two experience sampling studies performed in 2021 and 2023 with working adults in the United States (N = 358; 26,234 observations). Time-lagged models showed that sharing positive information and sharing information to connect predicted improved emotional well-being, work energy, and connection over time, while sharing negative information and sharing information to vent predicted reductions in emotional well-b

The interactive effects of counselor gender, physical attractiveness and status on client self-disclosure.

Investigated client self-disclosure and client perception of counselors (as expressed in counselor evaluations) as a function of the sex, attractiveness and status of the counselor, and the sex of the client. Counselor gender and attractiveness were established by means of stimulus photographs; counselor status was defined in terms of education and experience. Ss (160 college students) first rated their counselors on intelligence and empathy; they then completed Jourard's Self-Disclosure Questionnaire while role-playing clients in therapy. A four-factor between-Ss analysis of disclosure scores

Care pathways following disclosure of adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: a dyadic qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) often move between family, school, and mental health services after disclosure, but the care pathways shaping psychiatric service engagement and continuity remain poorly understood. METHODS: We conducted a dyadic qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with 20 adolescents (14-17 years) with a history of NSSI and 20 caregivers in Shaoxing, China. Reflexive thematic analysis was combined with socioecological journey mapping to reconstruct post-disclosure care trajectories across individual, family, school, and health-syst

Associations Between Borderline Personality Disorder Symptoms and Online Self-Disclosure in Clinically Referred Youth.

Communicating online via social media has proven to facilitate disclosure of intimate topics and can therefore be helpful in the development of intimate relationships. However, for youth with borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms, it may be more difficult to know when, what, and to whom to disclose (i.e., effective disclosure) in online contacts. The authors examine associations between BPD symptoms, online self-disclosure, and ineffective online self-disclosure (e.g., regretting sharing something online). The sample consisted of 235 clinically referred youth (66.4% female), aged 12-2

Generalized Self-Disclosure Explains Variance in Outness Beyond Internalized Sexual Prejudice Among Young Adults.

Outness, or self-disclosure of sexual orientation, plays a key role in the sexual identity development of LGB individuals and is linked with mental health. Lower outness has been consistently linked with higher internalized sexual prejudice; however, no extant research has explored the relationship between generalized self-disclosure and outness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incremental validity of general self-disclosure to explain variance in outness beyond what is accounted for by internalized sexual prejudice among young adults (N = 387; 46 lesbians; 78 gay men; 49 bise

Provider Practices and Young Women's Experiences with Provider Self-disclosure during Emergency Contraceptive Visits.

BACKGROUND: Research on the impact of providers disclosing personal contraceptive experiences with patients is limited. In this study, we examine patient and provider perspectives about provider self-disclosure (PSD) of personal contraceptive experiences and its effects on contraceptive decision making and the provider-patient relationship. METHODS: We conducted 18 one-on-one telephone interviews with clinicians who provide contraceptive services to young women and 17 patients seeking emergency contraception from three Bay Area community-based, youth-friendly clinics regarding their contracep

Self-disclosure, emotional expression and intimacy within romantic relationships of people with social phobia.

The current study examined aspects of communication and intimacy between people with social phobia and their romantic partners. Forty-eight individuals with social phobia and 58 community controls completed a series of questionnaires to measure self-disclosure, emotional expression and levels of intimacy within their romantic relationships. Participants with social phobia reported less emotional expression, self-disclosure and intimacy than controls, even after controlling for a diagnosis of mood disorder. The group differences did not differ significantly by gender. A continuous measure of so

Linguistic markers of depression and emergent self-stigma in online self-disclosures: A mixed-methods study on Chinese social media.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a global mental health crisis, exacerbated by stigma that hinders open expression, particularly in collectivistic cultures. While linguistic markers of depression (e.g., self-focus, negative emotions) have been identified in clinical, Western contexts, their replication in non-clinical, everyday online discourse and their intersections with self-stigma remain underexplored. METHODS: Using a mixed-methods design, we collected 627 depression disclosures and 729 control posts from the social media platform Xiaohongshu via automated web crawling. Posts were analyzed usin

Exploring the Predictors of Distress Disclosure: Self-Compassion and Emotional Regulation in Indian College Students.

Self-disclosure plays a crucial role in psychological well-being; however, predictors of distress disclosure are less explored, especially in non-Western contexts such as India. This study examined the relationship among self-compassion, emotional regulation (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression), and distress disclosure among Indian college students, as well as differences between psychology and non-psychology majors. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was used with 329 Indian college students aged 18 to 25, recruited through convenience sampling. The Self-Compassion Scale-Sho

The Use of Self-Disclosure in Group Therapy: Engaging Social Enactments in Modern Group Treatment.

This paper was originally a panel discussion at the Annual American Group Psychotherapy Association 2025 Conference. Working with enactments of social oppression in groups presents special challenges for group leaders trained to work exclusively within a developmental model. When the group attends to issues of social power, the leader can be seen not only as a transferential figure but also as a representative of an oppressive social class. This shift from developmental to social transference often stimulates anxiety in the group leader, who then struggles with this charged transference. This

Identifying Self-Disclosures of Use, Misuse and Addiction in Community-based Social Media Posts.

In the last decade, the United States has lost more than 500,000 people from an overdose involving prescription and illicit opioids making it a national public health emergency (USDHHS, 2017). Medical practitioners require robust and timely tools that can effectively identify at-risk patients. Community-based social media platforms such as Reddit allow self-disclosure for users to discuss otherwise sensitive drug-related behaviors. We present a moderate size corpus of 2500 opioid-related posts from various subreddits labeled with six different phases of opioid use: Medical Use, Misuse, Addicti

Adolescent social learning within supportive friendships: Self-disclosure and relationship quality from adolescence to adulthood.

This study examines links between self-disclosure and relationship quality with close friends from adolescence to adulthood. A diverse community sample of adolescents (N = 184) participated in survey and observational measures annually from ages 13 through 29, along with their close friends and romantic partners. Random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling (RICLPM) was used to parse markers of within-individual change from age 13 to 18. Long-term longitudinal path models also investigated cascading associations among self-disclosure and relationship quality, on aggregate, from adolescence to

Weighing the consequences: self-disclosure of HIV-positive status among African American injection drug users.

Theorists posit that personal decisions to disclose being HIV positive are made based on the perceived consequences of that disclosure. This study examines the perceived costs and benefits of self-disclosure among African American injection drug users (IDUs). A total of 80 African American IDUs were interviewed in-depth subsequent to testing HIV positive. Participants reported that interpersonal costs of self-disclosure included stigma, loss of sexual/romantic partners, emotional harming of family/friends, shattering of privacy, physical isolation, blame, and loss of income. The benefits of di

Effect of verbal self-disclosure on natural killer cell activity: moderating influence of cynical hostility.

One objective of the present research was to examine the immunological effects of self-disclosing personal information regarding a traumatic or stressful experience. A second objective was to examine the hypothesis that the effect of self-disclosure on immune function is moderated by individual differences in cynical hostility. Forty-three male college undergraduates, classified as high or low on the Cook-Medley Hostility scale were randomly assigned to either a verbal self-disclosure or a nondisclosure discussion condition. Regretting a chance to connect: How neural responses to missed social opportunities predict self-disclosure.

Humans value communicating information about themselves to others, and exchanges of such information between two individuals are fundamental to social bond formation. Yet, people often keep information private, potentially forfeiting the chance to connect with someone new. In this preregistered functional MRI study, participants who experienced more missed social opportunities in an iterative self-disclosure task-or instances where withholding information was met with an ostensible partner's self-disclosure-tended to feel closer to this partner faster. Missed social opportunities were regretta
