Self-induced seizures presumably by peri-orbital somatosensory self-stimulation: a report of two cases.

Self-induced seizures by somatosensory stimulation are rare. We describe two epileptic patients with self-induced seizures presumably by peri-orbital somatosensory stimulation. Two infants with severely delayed psychomotor development and poor visual acuity after acute subdural hemorrhage in early infancy had been diagnosed as having West syndrome. They evolutionally became to show serial self-induced seizures preceded by rubbing eye with finger in one case and touching right eyebrow with the back of left hand in the other case. Video-electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring was useful to confi

Time structure of self-grooming in the rat: self-facilitation and effects of hypothalamic stimulation and neuropeptides.

Specific brain manipulations, such as stimulation of the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH) or injections of neuropeptides, increase self-grooming in the rat. Such manipulations also affect the different movements that constitute grooming. Using models to assess the time structure of these movements, the authors demonstrate that the rules that control the time structure within grooming are different from the ones that control its initiation. This study also showed that grooming is self-facilitating and that different brain manipulations in the same hypothalamic area induce struc

Deep Brain Stimulation, Continuity over Time, and the True Self.

One of the topics that often comes up in ethical discussions of deep brain stimulation (DBS) is the question of what impact DBS has, or might have, on the patient's self. This is often understood as a question of whether DBS poses a threat to personal identity, which is typically understood as having to do with psychological and/or narrative continuity over time. In this article, we argue that the discussion of whether DBS is a threat to continuity over time is too narrow. There are other questions concerning DBS and the self that are overlooked in discussions exclusively focusing on psycholog

Robust Iterative Stimulation with Self-Antigens Overcomes CD8+ T Cell Tolerance to Self- and Tumor Antigens.

The immune system adapts to constitutive antigens to preserve self-tolerance, which is a major barrier for anti-tumor immunity. Antigen-specific reversal of tolerance constitutes a major goal to spur therapeutic applications. Here, we show that robust, iterative, systemic stimulation targeting tissue-specific antigens in the context of acute infections reverses established CD8+ T cell tolerance to self, including in T cells that survive negative selection. This strategy results in large numbers of circulating and resident memory self-specific CD8+ T cells that are widely distributed and can be

Development and validation of the Stimulant Refusal Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (SRSEQ) in stimulant users in treatment.

BACKGROUND: Self-efficacy is a core component of Social Cognitive Theory. Refusal self-efficacy is an individual's belief in their ability to refuse a substance in specific high-risk situations. Change in refusal self-efficacy is predictive of positive treatment outcomes. Measurement of refusal self-efficacy is critical as it directs coping skills development techniques though existing behavioural treatments. There is no validated measure of stimulant refusal self-efficacy. This study developed and validated the Stimulant Refusal Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (SRSEQ) to measure confidence in the

Could affect regulation via vagal nerve self- stimulation be a maintaining factor in non-suicidal self-harm?

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a serious and common phenomenon which has been linked with emotion or affect regulation. The capacity for top-down emotion regulation has also been linked to vagal tone. Vagal tone is known to be low in groups with a propensity to engage in NSSI. HYPOTHESIS: Some forms of NSSI, both direct and indirect, may result in vagal stimulation. The resulting increase in vagal tone may be linked to activation of prefrontal areas and improved top-down emotion regulation. This may be a maintaining factor in NSSI. EVALUATION: Cutting with the sight of blood,

Endoscopically Implanted, Self-Powered, Vagal Nerve Stimulation Device: Experimental Feasibility Study.

Background: The prevalence of metabolic disorders and obesity is increasing worldwide. The underlying pathogenetic mechanisms include an imbalance of the autonomic nervous system secondary to a relative decrease of the parasympathetic vagal tone or increase of the sympathetic tone. Previous clinical experience with a surgically implanted gastric pacemaker for morbid obesity showed that augmenting the vagal tone effects satiety and weight control. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of endoscopic implantation of a brain-neuromodulator (BNM) within the proximal gastric wall. Meth

Self-Administration of Right Vagus Nerve Stimulation Activates Midbrain Dopaminergic Nuclei.

Background: Left cervical vagus nerve stimulation (l-VNS) is an FDA-approved treatment for neurological disorders including epilepsy, major depressive disorder, and stroke, and l-VNS is increasingly under investigation for a range of other neurological indications. Traditional l-VNS is thought to induce therapeutic neuroplasticity in part through the coordinated activation of multiple broadly projecting neuromodulatory systems in the brain. Recently, it has been reported that striking lateralization exists in the anatomical and functional connectivity between the vagus nerves and the dopaminer

Self-face hallucination evoked by electrical stimulation of the human brain.

OBJECTIVES: Self-face hallucination (autoscopic hallucination or AH) has been reported in patients with widespread brain damage or retrospectively after epileptic seizures. The neural basis and the self-processing operations underlying AH remain unknown. METHODS: We report the results of intracerebral electrical stimulations of the right medial occipitoparietal cortex (right precuneus and occipitoparietal sulcus) in 2 patients with epilepsy who underwent a stereo-EEG. RESULTS: Immediately after the onset of the stimulation, the 2 patients reported seeing their current own face, facing themse

A case of trigeminal-vagal neuralgia relieved by peripheral self-stimulation.

A case of simultaneous trigeminal and vagoglossopharyngeal neuralgia is described. No microvascular compression was seen at the trigeminal complex while the origin of vagoglossopharyngeal pain could have been due either to Chiari malformation or microvascular compression of the IX-X nerve complex. Decompressive surgery was ineffective. The patient could completely block his facial painful fits by strongly pinching the anterior axillary fold. This case militates against peripheral theories of facial neuralgias, including microvascular compression and ganglion ignition focus theories, and suppor

Functional imaging and neurochemical correlates of stimulant self-administration in primates.

RATIONALE: Recent advances in neuroimaging and in vivo neurochemistry have documented drug-induced functional changes in brain activity under physiologically relevant conditions. These approaches have significant strengths and important limitations that should be considered. OBJECTIVES: The present review describes current in vivo approaches to characterize drug effects as they relate to behavior, and highlights key contributions derived from each approach in the context of stimulant self-administration in primates. METHODS: Techniques relating in vitro neurochemistry to behavioral pharmacol

Totally Organic Hydrogel-Based Self-Closing Cuff Electrode for Vagus Nerve Stimulation.

An intrinsically soft organic electrode consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-modified polyurethane (PEDOT-PU) is embedded into a bilayer film of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels for developing a self-closing cuff electrode for neuromodulation. The curled form of the PVA hydrogel is prepared by releasing internal stress in the bilayer structure. The inner diameter of the cuff electrode is set to less than 2 mm for immobilization to the vagus nerve (VN) of humans and pigs. The stability of the immobilization is examined, while the pressure applied to a nerve bundle is at a harmless le

Self-Referential Processing Effects of Non-invasive Brain Stimulation: A Systematic Review.

Systematic reviews of neuroimaging studies confirm stimulus-induced activity in response to verbal and non-verbal self-referential processing (SRP) in cortical midline structures, temporoparietal cortex and insula. Whether SRP can be causally modulated by way of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has also been investigated in several studies. Here we summarize the NIBS literature including 27 studies of task-based SRP comparing response between verbal and non-verbal SRP tasks. The studies differed in design, experimental tasks and stimulation parameters. Results support the role of left inf

Acupuncture Modulates Intracranial Self-Stimulation of the Medial Forebrain Bundle in Rats.

Acupuncture affects the central nervous system via the regulation of neurotransmitter transmission. We previously showed that Shemen (HT7) acupoint stimulation decreased cocaine-induced dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens. Here, we used the intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) paradigm to evaluate whether HT stimulation regulates the brain reward function of rats. We found that HT stimulation triggered a rightward shift of the frequency-rate curve and elevated the ICSS thresholds. However, HT7 stimulation did not affect the threshold-lowering effects produced by cocaine. These results in

Lateralized effect of pallidal stimulation on self-mutilation in Lesch-Nyhan disease.

Lesch-Nyhan disease (LND) is an X-linked hereditary disorder caused by a deficiency of hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase. This syndrome is characterized by hyperuricemia, self-mutilation, cognitive impairment, and movement disorders such as spasticity and dystonia. The authors describe the case of a 15-year-old boy who underwent bilateral placement of globus pallidus internus (GPi) deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes for the treatment of generalized dystonia. His self-mutilating behavior gradually disappeared several weeks after the start of GPi stimulation. The dystonia and s

Influence of social dominance on self-stimulation behavior in male golden hamsters.

The effect of a socially dominant hamster on the self-stimulation behavior of the subordinate hamster was examined. After determining social ranking, six hamsters were trained to press a lever in an operant chamber in which a dominant hamster was presented over a grid wall. The threshold of rewarding effect was evaluated by using a descending series of current intensity as electrical reward. When a dominant hamster was present, the subordinate hamster showed a shift of intensity-response function to the right (higher intensity). The presence of a subordinate hamster did not influence the respo
