OBJECTIVE: Ayahuasca is a psychedelic brew that originated in the Amazon basin. The psychological effects of this drug are becoming better understood due to the growing research interest in identifying new potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of emotion dysregulation and other disorders. Previous studies suggest that ayahuasca enhances mindfulness-related capacities (decentering, non-judging, non-reacting and acceptance) and emotion regulation. The aim of the present exploratory study was to determine the effects of ayahuasca on self-compassion in a community sample.

While ample evidence has demonstrated the beneficial effects of self-compassion and other-compassion on the promotion of well-being and reduction of psychological distress independently, the effects of their co-occurrence have been less examined. By employing a three-level meta-analysis, the present study synthesized 193 studies across 31 cultural contexts. Results showed that the effect size of the association between self-compassion and other-compassion was small (r = .19), and that the cultural values of collectivism-individualism moderated the association, with stronger effects shown in cu

Self-criticism and low self-compassion are implicated in the development and maintenance of binge eating. However, the association between these self-attitudes and binge eating symptoms remains unclear. Women with symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa (BN) or Binge Eating Disorder (BED) were randomised to either a self-compassion (n = 30) or self-critical rumination (n = 30) strategy following a negative mood induction. Responses to food cues (cue reactivity and affect) and calorie consumption in a 'taste test' were assessed. The self-compassion strategy was associated with a greater improvement in posi

Autistic individuals are frequently exposed to stigmatizing attitudes and discrimination. Through the lived experience of stigmatizing attitudes, autistic people can internalize the negative stereotypes associated with autism. This phenomenon is known as self-stigma. In non-autistic populations, self-stigma is associated with shame and negative mental health outcomes. In this study, we aim to better understand the mental health outcomes associated with self-stigma in autism and to investigate whether and how self-compassion compared to camouflaging may protect from self-stigma in autistic indi

BACKGROUND: There have been longstanding theories and research evidence into the important role of the person's vulnerability at the level of self-concept in bipolar disorder (BD). The current study investigated two emerging self-related constructs, self-compassion and nonattachment to self in BD. Specifically, we examined the levels of the two constructs in people with BD compared with those from the general population, and the associations between the constructs and bipolar symptomologies within the BD group.
METHODS: The BD group consisted of 302 individuals with a diagnosis of BD particip

Self-compassion is the ability to respond to one's failures, shortcomings, and difficulties with kindness and openness rather than criticism. This study, which might be regarded as a proof-of-concept study, aimed to establish whether self-compassion is associated with expected emotional responses and the likelihood of responding with problem solving, support seeking, distraction, avoidance, rumination, or catastrophizing to unpleasant self-relevant events occurring in 3 social contexts. Sixty chronic pain patients were presented with 6 vignettes describing scenes in which the principal actor t

INTRODUCTION: Self-compassion is an adaptive means of relating to oneself that encompasses elements of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness. Self-compassion has positive associations with health and may dampen biological and psychological stress responses, which would be particularly helpful for those with a history of early life adversity. The purpose of this study was to determine i) the association of trait self-compassion with cortisol and affective responses to an acute psychosocial stressor among early adolescents, and ii) whether this association differed by exposure to early

BACKGROUND: Emerging research suggests that low self-compassion may be linked to psychopathology and in particular depressive symptoms. To further elucidate this topic, the present study investigated self-compassion in patients with Bipolar Disorder (BD).
METHOD: Thirty remitted BD patients were compared to thirty age- and sex matched controls on the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). The BD patients also completed the Altman Self-Rating Mania Scale (ASRM), the Major Depression Inventory (MDI), the Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS), the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) and the Internalized

The present research examined the notion that the prosocial attitude of compassion is positively related to the antisocial attitude of hostility given that compassion and hostility entail elements reflecting vigilant, prevention-focused self-regulation. In fact, it was found in four samples (N = 4,903) that individuals with a strong vigilant prevention focus reported higher levels on measures of hostility as well as higher levels on compassion than individuals characterized by a weak prevention focus. In addition, compassion and hostility are indeed positively correlated reflecting the Compass

The present study examined the relative contributions of self-compassion, fear of self-compassion, and self-esteem in eating disorder pathology. One-hundred and fifty-five female undergraduate students and 97 females entering eating disorder treatment completed the Self-Compassion Scale, Fears of Compassion Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory, and Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire. T-tests revealed that the patient group had lower mean self-compassion and higher mean fear of self-compassion than the student group. When controlling for self-esteem, high fear of self-compassion emerge

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is widely recognised as beneficial for well‑being, yet the psychological mechanisms underlying this relationship, particularly those involving mindfulness and self‑compassion, remain insufficiently examined. The Exercise and Self‑Esteem Model with Self‑Compassion (EXSEM‑SC) highlights the roles of exercise self‑efficacy and body compassion in fostering self‑compassion, but it does not address the contributions of mindfulness and interoceptive body awareness in mitigating self‑criticism associated with discomfort, inadequacy, or doubt during activity.

Post-stroke depression is a frequent and clinically important complication among stroke survivors, contributing to poorer functional recovery and reduced quality of life. The aim of this study was to examine the interrelationships among neuroticism, resilience, compassion, self-compassion, and depressive symptoms in older stroke survivors. Stroke survivors aged ≥50 years were recruited from outpatient clinics at Chiang Mai University Hospital, Thailand. Participants completed standardized questionnaires assessing neuroticism, resilience, compassion, self-compassion, and depressive symptoms. Pe

OBJECTIVES: Very little is known about the role of self-compassion on performing artists' mental health. This project had two primary aims. First, was to examine the relationship between self-compassion and mental health among performing artists in dance, music, and acting. Second, was to test a brief compassion-based intervention to establish proof of concept for future work.
METHOD: Two sequential studies recruiting Australian performing artists were conducted. In Study 1, a cross-sectional online survey of performing artists explored patterns of association between self-compassion and ment

AIM: Although it is well established that youth with type 1 Diabetes (T1D) experience high rates of distress, current clinical care is often under-resourced and unable to provide sufficient or timely psychological support. The current study was designed to evaluate the safety, usability and feasibility of 'COMPASS,' a self-compassion chatbot intervention.
METHODS: Forty adolescents (aged 12-16 years) living with T1D participated in a 12-week, single-group feasibility study using a mixed methods approach. Usability was assessed via qualitative feedback and interviews, feasibility through app a

Depression is a common symptom among college students and is often accompanied by negative thoughts about oneself. Self-compassion is a technique students can use to combat those negative thoughts. Self-compassion is an emotion-regulation strategy in which the individual engages in self-kindness, particularly after a mistake, failure, and/or rejection. This paper reviews the concept of self-compassion, assessment of self-compassion, and interventions that have been shown to increase self-compassion. Self-compassion is associated with lower levels of psychopathology and higher levels of well-be

BACKGROUND: People with mental disorders face frequent stigmatizing attitudes and behaviors from others. Importantly, they can internalize such negative attitudes and thus self-stigmatize. Self-stigma is involved in diminished coping skills leading to social avoidance and difficulties in adhering to care. Reducing self-stigma and its emotional corollary, shame, is thus crucial to attenuate the negative outcomes associated with mental illness. Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) is a third-wave cognitive behavioral therapy that targets shame reduction and hostile self-to-self relationship and allo

Long COVID has been associated with stigmatization, prompting exploration of coping mechanisms. This cross-sectional study examined whether self-compassion and self-coldness mediate long-COVID stigma's effects on well-being. We surveyed 201 German adults with long-COVID (89% female; M age = 43.27, SD = 10.57). Most were officially diagnosed (88%), and 93% still experienced long-COVID symptoms at the time of survey. Measures included stigma, self-compassion, self-coldness, subjective well-being (SWB), and flourishing. Long-COVID stigma negatively correlated with SWB and flourishing. Higher self
