Turing Jest: Distributional Semantics and One-Line Jokes.

Humor is an essential aspect of human experience, yet surprisingly, little is known about how we recognize and understand humorous utterances. Most theories of humor emphasize the role of incongruity detection and resolution (e.g., frame-shifting), as well as cognitive capacities like Theory of Mind and pragmatic reasoning. In multiple preregistered experiments, we ask whether and to what extent exposure to purely linguistic input can account for the human ability to recognize one-line jokes and identify their entailments. We find that GPT-3, a large language model (LLM) trained on only langua

Food semantics on pro-anorexia websites in Italy.

INTRODUCTION: The term pro-ana (pro-anorexia) means the spread of restrictive eating behaviors and anorectic advices in virtual spaces written by teenagers. The purpose of this pilot study consists in a qualitative and quantitative analysis of foods contained in a linguistic corpus made up of users' comments on pro-ana websites. METHOD: The corpus of pro-ana websites was analyzed through the T2K tool based on word-frequency processing. RESULTS: The results show conversations regarding beverages, products of vegetable origin (fruit, vegetables) and low-calorie foods, with a tendency to limit

The neural basis of combinatory syntax and semantics.

Human language allows us to create an infinitude of ideas from a finite set of basic building blocks. What is the neurobiology of this combinatory system? Research has begun to dissect the neural basis of natural language syntax and semantics by analyzing the basics of meaning composition, such as two-word phrases. This work has revealed a system of composition that involves rapidly peaking activity in the left anterior temporal lobe and later engagement of the medial prefrontal cortex. Both brain regions show evidence of shared processing between comprehension and production, as well as betwe

The left posterior angular gyrus is engaged by autobiographical recall not object-semantics, or event-semantics: Evidence from contrastive propositional speech production.

The angular gyrus (AG) has been implicated in a myriad of cognitive functions. Using the previously under-studied naturalistic task of propositional speech production, we investigated the engagement of the left posterior AG (pAG) by three forms of memory: 1) episodic/autobiographical memory, 2) object semantic-memory, and 3) event-semantic knowledge. We conducted an ALE meta-analysis, followed by an functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. The meta-analysis showed that pAG is only engaged as part of the propositional speech network when the task carries an autobiographical component

Gravity matters for the neural representations of action semantics.

The dynamic relationship between the neural representation of action word semantics and specific sensorimotor experience remains controversial. Here, we temporarily altered human subjects' sensorimotor experience in a 15-day head-down tilt bed rest setting, a ground-based analog of microgravity that disproportionally affects sensorimotor experiences of the lower limbs, and examined whether such effector-dependent activity deprivation specifically affected the neural processes of comprehending verbs of lower-limb actions (e.g. to kick) relative to upper-limb ones (e.g. to pinch). Using function

Treating limb apraxia via action semantics: a preliminary study.

Limb apraxia is evident in approximately 50% of patients after left hemisphere cerebral vascular accident (LCVA) and increases disability and caregiver dependence. Individuals with apraxia exhibit abnormalities in spatio-temporal aspects of gesture production and/or in knowledge of tool-related actions (action semantics). This preliminary study of three LCVA participants aimed to (i) explore the efficacy of a novel Action Network Treatment (ANT) that focused on improving the semantic association between tool actions and other types of tool knowledge, an intervention inspired by successful sema

Semantics and semantic errors: implicit access to semantic information from words and nonwords in deep dyslexia.

In this paper we describe dissociations of implicit versus explicit access to semantic information in a patient with deep dyslexia. This acquired reading disorder is characterized by the production of morphological (e.g., SLEEP read as SLEEPING) and semantic errors (e.g., HEART read as BLOOD) and consequently provides a potential window into the operation of both aspects of the language system. The deep dyslexic patient in this study (JO) demonstrated implicit semantic access to items in a number of tasks despite the fact that she was unable to correctly read these items aloud. The findings fr

Perceptual and semantic deficits in face recognition in semantic dementia.

STATE OF THE ART: Semantic dementia (SD) patients including semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) and semantic behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (sbvFTD) patients show semantic difficulties identifying faces and known people related to right anterior temporal lobe (ATL) atrophy. However, it remains unclear whether they also have perceptual deficits in face recognition. METHODOLOGY: We selected 74 SD patients (54 with svPPA and predominant left ATL atrophy and 20 with sbvFTD and predominant right ATL atrophy) and 36 cognitively healthy controls (HC) from UCSF Memory and

[Language impairment and semantic memory loss of semantic dementia].

Semantic dementia (SD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by atrophy of the anterior temporal regions and progressive loss of semantic memory. SD has recently been reported to be associated with a pathologic diagnosis of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) with Tar DNA-binding protein of 43 kDa (TDP-43) immunoreactive inclusions (FTLD-TDP) type 2 by Mackenzie. In the first several years of the disease, SD patients, especially those with left hemisphere-dominant temporal atrophy, present with primary progressive aphasia, in which language deterioration is obvious; however, they d

Emergence and progression of 'non-semantic' deficits in semantic dementia.

Although semantic dementia (SD) is defined as a selective disruption of conceptual knowledge, a number of group studies have now demonstrated that SD patients also show impaired performance on tasks not usually considered to have a high semantic load (e.g., reading words aloud and lexical or object decision). The aim of the current study was to document the relative deterioration, over time, of a number of semantic and so-called 'non-semantic' tasks in LF, a single case of SD for whom - by virtue of his work as a published cartoonist - we also have extensive data regarding his pre-morbid lingu

Investigating semantic memory impairments: the contribution of semantic priming.

The semantic priming task is a valuable tool in the investigation of semantic memory impairments in patients with acquired disorders of language. This is because priming performance reflects automatic or implicit access to semantic information, unlike most other tests of semantic knowledge, which rely on explicit, voluntary access. Priming results are important for two main reasons: First, normal priming results may be observed in patients who perform poorly on other semantic memory tests, enabling us to distinguish between loss of, or damage to, information in semantic memory, and voluntary a

Comparative semantic profiles in semantic dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Patients with the semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia, also known as semantic dementia, and Alzheimer's disease have deficits in semantic memory. However, few comparative studies have been performed to determine whether these patient groups have distinct semantic memory impairments. We asked 15 patients with semantic variant primary progressive aphasia and 57 patients with Alzheimer's disease to judge semantic category membership of coloured photos and printed words that are members of familiar natural and manufactured categories, and we related performance to grey matter atrophy.

[Semantic memory in Alzheimer's disease: contributions of semantic priming].

Patients with Alzheimer's disease can be affected by semantic memory disorders from the onset of the dementia. Knowing precisely these disorders is important to improve the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Classical tests of semantic memory, such as naming and verbal fluency, highlight the existence of semantic disorders in the first stages of the disease. However, these tasks are not specific and involve cognitive processes (working memory, attentional resources), which are often disturbed in Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, they cannot attest the origin of the semantic disorders, which

Improving few-shot relation extraction through semantics-guided learning.

Few-shot relation extraction (few-shot RE) aims to recognize relations between the entity pair in a given text by utilizing very few annotated instances. As a simple yet efficient approach, prototype network-based methods often directly incorporate relation information to enhance prototype representation or leverage contrastive learning to mitigate prediction confusion. Despite achieving good results, the above methods are still susceptible to false judgments of outlier samples and confusion of similar classes. To address these issues, we propose a novel Semantics-Guided Learning (SemGL) metho

Distinguishing Quadriceps Tendinopathy and Patellar Tendinopathy: Semantics or Significant?

Jumper's knee is not synonymous with patellar tendinopathy. The term includes patellar tendinopathy and quadriceps tendinopathy. Although the patellar and quadriceps tendons work in tandem as part of the extensor mechanism of the knee, they have distinct anatomy and functional roles. As a result, there are probable differences in risk factors, etiology, and response to treatment. It is time to clinically separate patellar tendinopathy and quadriceps tendinopathy and design more specific rehabilitation programs. In this Viewpoint, the authors will (1) provide a rationale for distinguishing the

The neuroscience of action semantics in neurodegenerative brain diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Within the last decade, the neurobiology of action processing has moved from an obscure topic of specialist interest to one of the most popular themes in modern neuroscience. However, the wealth of literature and the diversity of approaches and theoretical models can make the field complex and, at times, bewildering. This review presents the main currents of research, examining their theoretical underpinnings in an interdisciplinary context. RECENT FINDINGS: The presence of specific deficits in verb and action processing has been documented in a wide range of neurodegenerat

A case study investigating the role of the anterior temporal lobes in general semantics and semantics specific to persons, emotions and social conceptual knowledge.

The role of the anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) in semantic representation remains still much debated. Long thought to support domain-general semantic processing, recent accounts have alternatively suggested that they may be preferentially involved in the processing of person-related semantic knowledge. Several studies have supported such a distinction, but few have either examined both types of semantic processing together, or considered the role of potentially important confounding variables. Here, we address these issues by investigating both domain-general and person-specific semantic proce

Systematic detection of predictive gene sets by semantics-based selection.

BACKGROUND: The Gene Ontology (GO) is a public resource that describes gene functions and characteristics through a structured vocabulary of standardised terms. It currently contains annotations for over 1.5 million gene products, each linked to one or more GO terms. In this study, we propose integrating this GO-based semantic structure into machine learning systems for medical diagnostics. This approach serves a dual purpose: first, to prioritise genes that are semantically relevant to a given clinical task, thereby refining model input; and second, to enable the analysis of biologically pred
