OBJECTIVE: The apparent effect of superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) on middle ear- and cochlear impedance has led researchers to investigate the use of wideband acoustic immittance as a screening tool when SSCD is suspected. The purpose of the study was to describe the absorbance characteristics and tympanometric values of ears with confirmed SSCD measured at tympanometric peak pressure (TPP) and at ambient pressure.
METHODS: Wideband Acoustic Immittance was performed at ambient pressure and at TPP on ten participants (12 ears) with confirmed SSCD, as well as on an age- and gender…

Semicircular canal dehiscence is an important entity often presenting with symptoms of noise or pressure induced vertigo, autophony, aural fullness and conductive hearing loss. Due to its varied presentation and mimic of other otologic conditions its consideration is of increased importance. Within we report a case of right sided posterior semicircular canal dehiscence secondary to an enlarged and high jugular bulb. The results of this observation indicate a need for patients with auditory symptoms and high riding jugular bulbs to be evaluated for possible posterior semicircular canal dehiscen…

Posterior semicircular canal dehiscence is a rare otologic entity that presents with third window signs and symptoms. Petrous apex cholesteatoma, fibrous dysplasia, high riding jugular bulb, and eosinophilic granuloma have been reported to be associated with posterior semicircular canal dehiscence. Here we report a case of development of posterior semicircular canal dehiscence following an endolymphatic sac surgery for the first time.

BACKGROUND: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence is a recently described cause of imbalance, hearing loss, and tinnitus. Symptoms may begin after abrupt changes in intracranial or middle ear pressure.
CASE: This patient presented with a 6-year history of imbalance, hearing loss, and pulsatile tinnitus beginning when she was pushing during labor. A temporal-bone computed tomography scan showed a dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal. Surgical repair of the dehiscence through the middle cranial fossa resulted in immediate resolution of the patient's symptoms, and she returned to full …

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the operative management of posterior canal dehiscence.
METHODS: A transmastoid approach to and plugging of the posterior canal was performed for posterior semicircular canal dehiscence (PSCD).
RESULTS: Postoperatively, the patient exhibited improvement in conductive hearing loss and vestibular symptoms.
CONCLUSIONS: PSCD can cause symptoms identical to that of superior semicircular canal dehiscence. Successful PSCD plugging can be performed without visualization of the actual area of dehiscence.

Importance. Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SCD) is a third window lesion of the inner ear causing symptoms of vertigo, autophony, tinnitus, and hearing loss. A "two-hit" hypothesis has traditionally been proposed, whereby thinly developed bone overlying the superior canal is disrupted by a sudden change in intracranial pressure. Although the symptoms of SCD may be precipitated by head injury, no previous reports have described a temporal bone fracture directly causing SCD. Observations. Two patients sustained temporal bone fractures after closed head trauma, and developed unilateral o…

Introduction Superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is mainly characterized by vestibular symptoms induced by intense sound stimuli or pressure changes, which occur because of dehiscence of the bony layer covering the superior semicircular canal. Case Report Here, we report a case of the syndrome with pulsatile tinnitus and ear fullness, in the absence of vestibular symptoms. Discussion Signs and symptoms of the syndrome are rarely obvious, leading to the requirement for a minimum workup to rule out or make diagnosis more probable and thus avoid misconduct.

The diagnostic role of audio-impedancemetry in superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) disease is well known. In particular, since the first reports, the presence of evoked acoustic reflexes has represented a determining instrumental exhibit in differential diagnosis with other middle ear pathologies that are responsible for a mild-low frequencies air-bone gap (ABG). Even though high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) completed by parasagittal reformatted images still represents the diagnostic gold standard, several instrumental tests can support a suspect of labyrinthine capsule dehi…

OBJECTIVE: We report what we believe to be a unique aetiology of the superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome, a recently described condition in which vestibular imbalance and/or hearing loss results from the loss of continuity of the bone overlying the superior semicircular canals.
CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old woman presented with autophony in the right ear and momentary imbalance when shouting (Tullio phenomenon). Temporal bone computed tomography revealed a defect of the right superior semicircular canal caused by an enlarged superior petrosal sinus receiving drainage from a large cer…

A puzzling aspect of middle ear surgery is the presence of an air-bone gap in a small number of cases with no apparent cause. We believe that some of these cases are due to unrecognized superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD). We have now gathered experience from 20 patients with SSCD presenting with apparent conductive hearing loss without vestibular symptoms. All affected ears had SSCD on high-resolution CT scan. The common findings in these patients were: (1) the air-bone gaps occurred in the lower frequencies below 2,000 Hz, and ranged from 10 to 60 dB; (2) bone conduction thresholds…

HYPOTHESIS: The goal of the investigation was to determine if vector analysis of nystagmus in a patient with the Tullio phenomenon could determine the source of the nystagmus.
BACKGROUND: The Tullio phenomenon consists of the combination of vertigo and abnormal eye and/or head movements provoked by sound. Dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal can be found in certain patients with the Tullio phenomenon.
METHODS: The patient was tested with pure tones ranging from 250 to 3,000 Hz at 95dB HL. The time course of the three-dimensional vector of eye movement, including torsion and vertical
