[Impulsivity, sensation seeking and aggressiveness in patients with bipolar I and II disorder].

OBJECTIVE: Although impulsivity may seem to be strongly linked to bipolar disorder, few studies have directly measured this phenomenon. To determine its implications for the prognosis of this illness, we studied the relationship between impulsivity and other aspects that are probably related, such as sensation seeking and aggressiveness, and different clinical variables of bipolar disorder. METHOD: Sixty-nine (type I, n=42; type II, n=27) outpatients from a unit specifically for bipolar patients in remission completed the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS), the Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS), t

Changes in respiration mediate changes in fear of bodily sensations in panic disorder.

The purpose of the study was to examine whether changes in pCO(2) mediate changes in fear of bodily sensation (as indexed by anxiety sensitivity) in a bio-behavioral treatment for panic disorder that targets changes in end-tidal pCO(2). Thirty-five panic patients underwent 4 weeks of capnometry-assisted breathing training targeting respiratory dysregulation. Longitudinal mediation analyses of the changes in fear of bodily symptoms over time demonstrated that pCO(2), but not respiration rate, was a partial mediator of the changes in anxiety sensitivity. Results were supported by cross lag panel

Assessment of automatic associations with bodily sensations and agoraphobic situations in panic disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: One of the central assumptions of cognitive models of Panic Disorder (PD) is that automatic panic-related associations are a core feature of PD. However, empirical findings are mixed and inconsistent, rendering it difficult to evaluate the role of panic-related associations adequately, particularly in relation to the relevant theories. The present study aimed to further advance our understanding of automatic associations in PD, and therefore applied a paradigm novel in this context, namely an Extrinsic Affective Simon Task (EAST). METHODS: Participants involved trea

Disordered eating in adolescence: the roles of sensation seeking, weight status, and behavioral difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies that have focused primarily on binge eating in young adults have suggested an association between the personality trait sensation seeking and disordered eating. Far less is known about this relationship in adolescents, particularly concerning sensation seeking and eating disorder psychopathology. Thus, the present study investigated the association between sensation seeking and disordered eating, including eating disorder psychopathology and relevant diagnostic symptoms of eating disorders (i.e., binge eating) in healthy adolescents, while also considering relevant

Neural oscillations underlying the neural gating of respiratory sensations in generalized anxiety disorder.

Individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) have been shown to have altered neural gating of respiratory sensations (NGRS) using respiratory-related evoked potentials (RREP); however, corresponding neural oscillatory activities remain unexplored. The present study aimed to investigate altered NGRS in individuals with GAD using both time and time-frequency analysis. Nineteen individuals with GAD and 28 healthy controls were recruited. Paired inspiratory occlusions were delivered to elicit cortical neural activations measured from electroencephalography. The GAD group showed smaller N1 a

[Fear of body symptoms and sensations in patients with panic disorders and patients with somatic diseases].

INTRODUCTION: A cognitive model of aetiology of panic disorder assumes that people who experience frequent panic attacks have tendencies to catastrophically interpret normal and benign somatic sensations--as signs of serious illness. This arise the question: is this cognition specific for patients with panic disorder and in what intensity it is present in patients with serious somatic illness and in healthy subjects. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to ascertain the differences in the frequency and intensity of "catastrophic" cognitions related to body sensations, and to ascertain the diff

Physiological sensation word usage in social anxiety disorder with and without comorbid depression.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by a fear of showing anxiety symptoms, which may manifest in greater physiological sensation (PS) word usage, especially when describing their anxious experiences. However, the role of comorbid major depressive disorder (MDD) is unknown. Given blunted physiological arousal in MDD, the SAD only group (SAD) may use more PS words than the comorbid (COM) group with SAD and MDD when discussing anxious memories. Due to more severe symptomology, however, the COM group may use more PS words than the SAD group. We examined these co

Phantom Sensations, Supernumerary Phantom Limbs and Apotemnophilia: Three Body Representation Disorders.

Body representation disorders continue to be mysterious and involve the anatomical substrate that underlies the mental representation of the body. These disorders sit on the boundaries of neurological and psychiatric diseases. We present the main characteristics of 3 examples of body representation disorders: phantom sensations, supernumerary phantom limb, and apotemnophilia. The dysfunction of anatomical circuits that regulate body representation can sometimes have paradoxical features. In the case of phantom sensations, the patient feels the painful subjective sensation of the existence of t

Priming associations between bodily sensations and catastrophic misinterpretations: Specific for panic disorder?

Cognitive models assume that panic disorder is characterised by a tendency to misinterpret benign bodily symptoms (e.g. breathlessness) in a catastrophic fashion (e.g. suffocation). This is a central part of the cognitive model which presents a core focus for treatment. Several studies have supported this hypothesis. These studies have, however, almost always relied on self-report. In addition to susceptibility to biases (e.g. distortions of memory), a limitation of research based on verbal report is its inability to capture the spontaneous/automatic nature that is attributed to these catastro

Possible chemical contribution from chromic gut sutures produces disorders of pain sensation like those seen in man.

Recently, it has been reported that loosely constrictive chromic gut ligatures around the sciatic nerve produce behavioral evidence of neuropathic pain in rats. It has been shown that axonal swelling after ligation results in a constriction injury associated with a decrease in the number of both large-diameter myelinated and small-diameter unmyelinated axons, but the mechanism(s) producing spontaneous pain and thermal hyperalgesia remain largely unknown. The present study systematically evaluated potential mechanisms involved in development of the behavioral changes produced by chromic gut lig

Physical sensations of craving in binge drinking and severe alcohol use disorder: A phenomenological approach.

BACKGROUND: Craving is a key concept in addictive disorders. However, despite seminal results identifying the pivotal role of its physical component, craving remains conceptualized as being centrally underpinned by psychological and cognitive processes. To explore the phenomenological dimension of physical craving in addiction, we measured self-reported body sensations of craving among individuals with subclinical (binge drinking, BD) or clinical (severe alcohol use disorder, SAUD) alcohol use disorders. METHODS: We used a body mapping technique, allowing for the free report of the bodily cou

[Incidence, risk factors and follow-up of sensation disorders after surgical wisdom tooth removal. Study of 1,106 cases].

A study was carried out to determine the risk of dysesthesia of the inferior alveolar and of the lingual nerve after molar surgery. A total of 1103 impacted lower wisdom teeth and 3 impacted lower second molars were removed in 687 patients, all of whom with unaltered sensibility preoperatively. Clinical, radiological, and surgical factors of each case were recorded. Postoperative disturbances in the sensibility of the lip and tongue were evaluated by neurological examination. Follow-up was carried out for a maximum of 35 weeks. Dysesthesia of the inferior alveolar nerve occurred with an incide

[A prospective study on temporary and permanent sensation disorders after oral surgical measures in the lateral mandibular area].

Postoperative disturbances of sensory nerve function after dentoalveolar surgery imply forensic problems. Also the indication of microsurgical reconstruction will be discussed in these cases as well. Both questions can only be seen on the background of data material concerning those nerve complications. Therefore a clinical prospective study on functional disturbances of the inferior alveolar as well as the lingual nerve after dentoalveolar surgery in 1.107 cases was undertaken. Concerning the inferior alveolar nerve 2.2% of temporary functional disturbances were assessed while 1.4% of tempora
