Secondary auditory cortex mediates a sensorimotor mechanism for action timing.

The ability to accurately determine when to perform an action is a fundamental brain function and vital to adaptive behavior. The behavioral mechanism and neural circuit for action timing, however, remain largely unknown. Using a new, self-paced action timing task in mice, we found that deprivation of auditory, but not somatosensory or visual input, disrupts learned action timing. The hearing effect was dependent on the auditory feedback derived from the animal's own actions, rather than passive environmental cues. Neuronal activity in the secondary auditory cortex was found to be both correla

Encoding and decoding in parietal cortex during sensorimotor decision-making.

It has been suggested that the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) of macaques plays a fundamental role in sensorimotor decision-making. We examined the neural code in LIP at the level of individual spike trains using a statistical approach based on generalized linear models. We found that LIP responses reflected a combination of temporally overlapping task- and decision-related signals. Our model accounts for the detailed statistics of LIP spike trains and accurately predicts spike trains from task events on single trials. Moreover, we derived an optimal decoder for heterogeneous, multiplexed LI

Evolution of object identity information in sensorimotor cortex throughout grasp.

Reaching for and grasping an object seems a continuous process, yet somatosensory signals undergo dramatic state changes near the time of object contact. Tactile afferents start conveying contact forces, while on-going proprioceptive signals are altered as hand shape stops changing. How cortex maintains object identity in the presence of changing, multi-modal signals remains unknown. We quantified object-specific information in neurons of the primary motor cortex (M1) and somatosensory areas 3a, 3b/1, and 2 in male macaque monkeys. Surprisingly, despite the decrease in activity in each area im

Intact finger representation within primary sensorimotor cortex of musician's dystonia.

Musician's dystonia presents with a persistent deterioration of motor control during musical performance. A predominant hypothesis has been that this is underpinned by maladaptive neural changes to the somatotopic organization of finger representations within primary somatosensory cortex. Here, we tested this hypothesis by investigating the finger-specific activity patterns in the primary somatosensory and motor cortex using functional MRI and multivariate pattern analysis in nine musicians with dystonia and nine healthy musicians. A purpose-built keyboard device allowed characterization of ac

Posterior parietal cortex predicts upcoming movement in dynamic sensorimotor control.

SignificanceMost studies in sensorimotor neurophysiology have utilized reactive movements to stationary goals pre-defined by sensory cues, but this approach is fundamentally incapable of determining whether the observed neural activity reflects current sensory stimuli or predicts future movements. In the present study, we recorded single-neuron activity from behaving monkeys engaged in a dynamic, flexible, stimulus-response contingency task that enabled us to distinguish activity co-varying with sensory inflow from that co-varying with motor outflow in the posterior parietal cortex.

Encoding of Articulatory Kinematic Trajectories in Human Speech Sensorimotor Cortex.

When speaking, we dynamically coordinate movements of our jaw, tongue, lips, and larynx. To investigate the neural mechanisms underlying articulation, we used direct cortical recordings from human sensorimotor cortex while participants spoke natural sentences that included sounds spanning the entire English phonetic inventory. We used deep neural networks to infer speakers' articulator movements from produced speech acoustics. Individual electrodes encoded a diversity of articulatory kinematic trajectories (AKTs), each revealing coordinated articulator movements toward specific vocal tract sha

Induced sensorimotor cortex plasticity remediates chronic treatment-resistant visual neglect.

Right brain injury causes visual neglect - lost awareness of left space. During prism adaptation therapy, patients adapt to a rightward optical shift by recalibrating right arm movements leftward. This can improve left neglect, but the benefit of a single session is transient (~1 day). Here we show that tonic disinhibition of left motor cortex during prism adaptation enhances consolidation, stabilizing both sensorimotor and cognitive prism after-effects. In three longitudinal patient case series, just 20 min of combined stimulation/adaptation caused persistent cognitive after-effects (neglect

Covert movements trigger repetition suppression of electroencephalography in sensorimotor cortex.

'Repetition suppression' (RS) denotes the decrease of neural responses to repeated external sensory stimuli. We showed that RS can be also triggered by internal processes alone. When individuals perform repetitive covert movements, that is, motor imagery or quasi-movements, both of which are associated with pericentral cortical activity without muscle activations, there was a significant recovery of electroencephalographic oscillations over sensorimotor cortices back to resting baseline level. After 58 s of task performance only 20% of α and 5% of β suppressions remained (overt movements: 34%

Sensorimotor-independent development of hands and tools selectivity in the visual cortex.

The visual occipito-temporal cortex is composed of several distinct regions specialized in the identification of different object kinds such as tools and bodies. Its organization appears to reflect not only the visual characteristics of the inputs but also the behavior that can be achieved with them. For example, there are spatially overlapping responses for viewing hands and tools, which is likely due to their common role in object-directed actions. How dependent is occipito-temporal cortex organization on object manipulation and motor experience? To investigate this question, we studied five

Haptic contents of a movie dynamically engage the spectator's sensorimotor cortex.

Observation of another person's actions and feelings activates brain areas that support similar functions in the observer, thereby facilitating inferences about the other's mental and bodily states. In real life, events eliciting this kind of vicarious brain activations are intermingled with other complex, ever-changing stimuli in the environment. One practical approach to study the neural underpinnings of real-life vicarious perception is to image brain activity during movie viewing. Here the goal was to find out how observed haptic events in a silent movie would affect the spectator's sensor

Proactive response inhibition abnormalities in the sensorimotor cortex of patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of response inhibition in patients with schizophrenia have focused on reactive inhibition tasks (e.g., stop-signal, go/no-go), primarily observing lateral prefrontal cortex abnormalities. However, recent studies suggest that purposeful and sustained (i.e., proactive) inhibition may also be affected in these patients. METHODS: Patients with chronic schizophrenia and healthy controls underwent fMRI while inhibiting motor responses during multisensory (audiovisual) stimulation. Resting state data were also collected. RESULTS: We included 37 patients with schizophren

Assessment of reorganization in the sensorimotor cortex after upper limb amputation.

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to investigate plastic changes occurring in the motor and somatosensory cortex after upper limb amputation, and their possible relationship to phantom pain. METHOD: To assess these plastic changes, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and source localization of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP). Eleven patients with upper limb amputation were investigated. The phantom pain intensity was assessed by visual analogue scaling (VAS). RESULTS: Using TMS mapping, we found a significant lateralization of the amplitude-weighted centre of gravity (P<0.01) and an enl

Somatotopic Mapping of the Developing Sensorimotor Cortex in the Preterm Human Brain.

In the mature mammalian brain, the primary somatosensory and motor cortices are known to be spatially organized such that neural activity relating to specific body parts can be somatopically mapped onto an anatomical "homunculus". This organization creates an internal body representation which is fundamental for precise motor control, spatial awareness and social interaction. Although it is unknown when this organization develops in humans, animal studies suggest that it may emerge even before the time of normal birth. We therefore characterized the somatotopic organization of the primary sens

The posterior parietal cortex as integrative hub for whisker sensorimotor information.

Our daily life consists of a continuous interplay between incoming sensory information and outgoing motor plans. Particularly during goal-directed behavior and active exploration of the sensory environment, brain circuits are merging sensory and motor signals. This is referred to as sensorimotor integration and is relevant for locomotion, vision or tactile exploration. The somatosensory (tactile) system is an attractive modality to study sensorimotor integration in health and disease, motivated by the need for revolutionary technology that builds upon conceptual understanding of sensorimotor i

Role of the sensorimotor cortex in Tourette syndrome using multimodal imaging.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. Most patients describe uncomfortable premonitory sensations preceding the tics and a subjective experience of increased sensitivity to tactile stimuli. These reports indicate that a sensory processing disturbance is an important component of TS together with motor phenomena. Thus, we focused our investigation on the role of the sensorimotor cortex (SMC) in TS using multimodal neuroimaging techniques. We measured the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)+/Creatine (Cre) ratio in the SMC using GABA (1) H magnet

Increased FDG uptake in the ipsilesional sensorimotor cortex in congenital hemiplegia.

The resting brain metabolism was estimated in six children suffering from a right congenital hemiplegia (CH) of subcortical origin. This estimate was based on the 18F-labeled 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-d-glucose (FDG) uptake measured by means of positron emission tomography and compared, using statistical parametric mapping (SPM99), with that of six control subjects. The contrast [CH children - Controls] showed that CH children had two loci of relatively higher FDG uptake. The larger voxel cluster was found in the ipsilesional hemisphere and comprised the primary motor and somatosensory cortices and lef

[Reparative changes in the sensorimotor cortex of the offspring in moderate prenatal alcoholism].

Sensorimotor cortex of 21-, 30-, 60-day-old offspring given prenatally moderate alcohol (2 g/kg) manifested signs of compensatory type: double nerve and glial cells, open capillaries, nearby nerve and glial cell bodies with basal membrane of capillaries. Intracellular reparative processes in dystrophic neurons were observed: nuclear activation, hyperplasia of cytoplasmic organelles, hypertrophy of some of them. Reparative processes are more distinct in 30-day-old rat offspring In 60-day-old offspring a polymorphic pattern of cortical synapses ultrastructure was found. However, dystrophic chang

Distribution and properties of commissural and other neurons in cat sensorimotor cortex.

Commissural, cortico-cortical and cortico-caudate neurons have been investigated in the primary sensorimotor cortex of the cat, using antidromic stimulation techniques, and histological identification of recording sites. These neurons are to be found in all cortical laminae except the first; commissural and cortico-cortical neurons were found to be commonest in laminae III and VI, whilst cortico-caudate neurons were most abundant on the border between laminae III and V, in motor areas. In sensory areas topographically identified as representing distal parts of limbs, commissural neurons are ve

Multizonal Cerebellar Influence Over Sensorimotor Areas of the Rat Cerebral Cortex.

The cerebral cortex requires cerebellar input for optimizing sensorimotor processing. However, how the sensorimotor cortex uses cerebellar information is far from understood. One critical and unanswered question is how cerebellar functional entities (zones or modules) are connected to distinct parts of the sensorimotor cortices. Here, we utilized retrograde transneuronal infection of rabies virus (RABV) to study the organization of connections from the cerebellar cortex to M1, M2, and S1 of the rat cerebral cortex. RABV was co-injected with cholera toxin β-subunit (CTb) into each of these cort
