In order to optimize the use of tactual aids for the deaf, it is important to have a battery of assessments to determine the potential contribution of the aids to acoustic perception and speech identification. We have designed such a battery to be used with young hearing-impaired children. The tasks were developed so that they could be implemented with standard audiometric equipment and applied to subjects of varying age and to different types of tactual aids. Illustrative results from four profoundly hearing-impaired children showed that tactual vocoders allowed detection of high frequencies

Sensory tricks are various manoeuvres that can ameliorate dystonia. Common characteristics are well known, but their variety is wide, sensory stimulation is not necessarily the critical feature, and their physiology is unknown. To enumerate the various forms of sensory tricks and describe their nature, research findings and theories that may elucidate their neurophysiologic mechanism, we reviewed the literature pertaining to sensory tricks, including variants like motor tricks, imaginary tricks, forcible tricks and reverse sensory tricks. On the basis of this information, we propose a new clas

Children with various types of disabilities are beginning to benefit from the extensive developments in the field of electronic and microcomputer technology that have occurred in recent years. There exists now many devices that can assist children with physical or communication handicaps, learning difficulties, or sensory impairments. Reviews of the literature were made in order to present some of the devices that are currently available and to introduce the concepts that they exemplify. With all of these devices, but especially for those designed to aid physically or communicatively handicapp

We administered the antiviral agent 2',3'-dideoxycytidine (ddC) to HIV-infected patients with either ARC or AIDS as part of the AIDS Clinical Treatment Group protocol 012 and serially evaluated them with neuropathic symptom questionnaires, neurologic examinations, nerve conduction studies, and quantitative sensory testing (QST). All patients treated with high-dose ddC (0.06 and 0.03 mg/kg every 4 hours) developed a painful, predominantly sensory peripheral neuropathy, with a mean onset of 7.7 weeks, which reached severe intensity over several days. Abnormalities of vibration QST threshold prec

PURPOSE: The aim of this review is to analyze haptic sensory substitution technologies for deaf, blind and deaf-blind individuals.
METHOD: The literature search has been performed in Scopus, PubMed and Google Scholar databases using selected keywords, analyzing studies from 1960s to present. Search on databases for scientific publications has been accompanied by web search for commercial devices. Results have been classified by sensory disability and functionality, and analyzed by assistive technology. Complementary analyses have also been carried out on websites of public international agenc

Coloured overlays or lenses are widely available for use by children and adults with difficulties or discomfort while reading. In recent years, systematic reviews have been conducted in an attempt to establish the strength of the evidence base for this intervention. The aim of this overview is to systematically review these reviews. The methodology was published prospectively as a protocol (Prospero CRD42017059172). Online databases Medline, Cinahl, Embase and the Cochrane Library were searched for systematic reviews on the efficacy of coloured overlays or lenses for the alleviation of reading

The hypotheses that in Braille learning coding strategies change with reading level, and coding differs between normal and retarded readers were tested with oddity judgments by blind children. Experiment 1 showed that strategy choices varied with reading level only in association with mental age. By contrast, shape neglect and preference for phonological strategies were shown by retarded readers rather than by matched normal readers. Experiment 2 showed that under instructions to use given coding strategies the retarded were as accurate as normal readers. Accuracy for all forms of coding incre

Several assistive technology solutions, targeting the group of Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI), have been proposed in the literature utilizing multi-sensor data fusion techniques. Furthermore, several commercial systems are currently being used in real-life scenarios by BVI individuals. However, given the rate by which new publications are made, the available review studies become quickly outdated. Moreover, there is no comparative study regarding the multi-sensor data fusion techniques between those found in the research literature and those being used in the commercial applications that ma

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a group of theoretically inspired computer structures for analyzing and modeling clearly going on texts at one or extra degrees of linguistic evaluation to acquire human-like language processing for quite a few activities and applications. Hearing and visually impaired people are unable to see entirely or have very low vision, as well as being unable to hear completely or having a hard time hearing. It is difficult to get information since both hearing and vision, which are crucial organs for receiving information, are harmed. Hearing and visually impaired

To pick up 3-D aspects of pictures is arguably the most difficult problem concerning tactile pictorial perception by the blind. The aim of the experiments reported was to examine the potential utility of texture gradients in this context. Since there is no theoretical basis for predicting absolute values of 3-D properties from 2-D patterns read by the finger pads, the abilities of participants to perceive gradients lying between known maxima and minima were assessed. Experiment 1 involved blindfolded sighted participants making verbal magnitude estimations of texture-gradient magnitudes corres

Albinism is inherited as autosomal recessive, with one exception: Ocular albinism, which has an x-linked trait. Visual symptoms include photophobia, varying degrees of nystagmus, reduction in visual acuity from 20/30 to 20/400 and varying degrees of moderate to high amounts of corneal astigmatism. Albinism patients respond very well to low vision devices and glare filters.

The experience gained at the low-vision center of St. Gallen Eye Hospital shows that there is a real need for this service, particularly among the elderly, and that this kind of counseling is very time-consuming. Until now, low-vision counseling in Switzerland has been provided mainly by opticians and other paramedical personnel. In view of these facts the question arises as to whether such services should not also--and primarily--be provided by ophthalmologists and their orthoptists. For more complicated cases it is suggested that low-vision counseling should also be offered at the ophthalmol

Visually impaired people face many challenges that limit their ability to perform daily tasks and interact with the surrounding world. Navigating around places is one of the biggest challenges that face visually impaired people, especially those with complete loss of vision. As the Internet of Things (IoT) concept starts to play a major role in smart cities applications, visually impaired people can be one of the benefitted clients. In this paper, we propose a smart IoT-based mobile sensors unit that can be attached to an off-the-shelf cane, hereafter a smart cane, to facilitate independent mo

Changes in the sensory environment modify our sensory experience and may result in experience-related or learning-induced reorganization within the central nervous system. Hearing aids change the sensory environment by stimulating a deprived auditory system; therefore, they may be capable of inducing changes within the central auditory system. Examples of studies that have shown hearing aid induced perceptual and/or physiological changes in the adult human auditory system are discussed. Evidence in the perceptual domain is provided by studies that have investigated (a) speech perception, (b) i

It is not clear whether the blind are generally superior to the sighted on measures of tactile sensitivity or whether they excel only on certain tests owing to the specifics of their tactile experience. We compared the discrimination performance of blind Braille readers and age-matched sighted subjects on three tactile tasks using precisely specified stimuli. Initially, the blind significantly outperformed the sighted at a hyperacuity task using Braille-like dot patterns, although, with practice, both groups performed equally well. On two other tasks, hyperacute discrimination of gratings that

The types of neuromuscular diseases associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are described. Our classification includes: (1) six subtypes of peripheral neuropathies--namely, acute Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, mononeuritis multiplex, an axonal, predominantly sensory, painful polyneuropathy, a sensory ataxic neuropathy due to ganglioneuronitis, and an inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathy presenting as cauda equina syndrome; (2) inflammatory myopathies (e.g., polymyositis); and (3) other less common neuromuscular manifestations, su

Visually impaired people seek social integration, yet their mobility is restricted. They need a personal navigation system that can provide privacy and increase their confidence for better life quality. In this paper, based on deep learning and neural architecture search (NAS), we propose an intelligent navigation assistance system for visually impaired people. The deep learning model has achieved significant success through well-designed architecture. Subsequently, NAS has proved to be a promising technique for automatically searching for the optimal architecture and reducing human efforts fo

Visually impaired people are often unaware of dangers in front of them, even in familiar environments. Furthermore, in unfamiliar environments, such people require guidance to reduce the risk of colliding with obstacles. This study proposes a simple smartphone-based guiding system for solving the navigation problems for visually impaired people and achieving obstacle avoidance to enable visually impaired people to travel smoothly from a beginning point to a destination with greater awareness of their surroundings. In this study, a computer image recognition system and smartphone application we
