In rodents, the barrel cortex is a specialized area within the somatosensory cortex that processes signals from the mystacial whiskers. We investigated the normal development of myelination in the barrel cortex of mice, as well as the effects of sensory deprivation on this pattern. Deprivation was achieved by trimming the whiskers on one side of the face every other day from birth. In control mice, myelin was not present until postnatal day 14 and did not show prominence until postnatal day 30; adult levels of myelination were reached by the end of the second postnatal month. Unbiased stereolo

Nasal breathing is a dynamic cortical organizer involved in various behaviors and states, such as locomotion, exploration, memory, emotion, introspection. However, the effect of sensory deprivation of nasal respiratory breath (NRD) on behavior remain poorly understood. Herein, general locomotor activity, emotion, learning and memory, social interaction, and mechanical pain were evaluated using a zinc sulfate nasal irrigation induced nasal respiratory sensory deprivation animal model (ZnSO4-induced mouse model). In the open field test, the elevated O-maze test, and forced swim test, NRD mice ex

Dendritic protrusions (spines and filopodia) are structural indicators of synapses that have been linked to neuronal learning and memory through their morphological alterations induced by development and experienced-dependent activities. Although previous studies have demonstrated that depriving sensory experience leads to structural changes in neocortical organization, the more subtle effects on dendritic protrusions remain unclear, mostly due to focus on only one specific cell type and/or age of manipulation. Here, we show that sensory deprivation induced by whisker trimming influences the d

Leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) are well characterized regulators of galanin expression. However, LIF knockout mice containing the rat galanin 5' proximal promoter fragment (- 2546 to + 15 bp) driving luciferase responded to axotomy in the same way as control mice. Also, LIF had no effect on reporter gene expression in vitro, neither in the presence or absence of NGF, suggesting that other factors mediate an axotomy response from the galanin promoter. We then addressed the role of nitric oxide (NO) using NGF-deprived rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neuron culture

The human nervous system evolved in environments characterized by continuous exposure to rich, multimodal bodily inputs, including locomotion, manual activity, physical effort, social touch, sexual contact, environmental variability, thermal fluctuations, and complex proprioceptive challenges. In contrast, modern lifestyles have progressively reduced many of these embodied sensory exposures through sedentarism, automation, climate-controlled environments, cushioned footwear, reduced manual labor, digital socialization, and diminished physical contact. Here, we propose the Embodied Sensory Depr

Sensory deprivation has long been known to cause hallucinations or "phantom" sensations, the most common of which is tinnitus induced by hearing loss, affecting 10-20% of the population. An observable hearing loss, causing auditory sensory deprivation over a band of frequencies, is present in over 90% of people with tinnitus. Existing plasticity-based computational models for tinnitus are usually driven by homeostatic mechanisms, modeled to fit phenomenological findings. Here, we use an objective-driven learning algorithm to model an early auditory processing neuronal network, e.g., in the dor

To investigate the neural plasticity in the somatosensory cortex, changes in somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) during finger ischemia were evaluated and compared with those affected by touch or movement interference. Somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded in the vicinity of the central sulcus in four patients with intractable epilepsy. During electrical stimulation to a selected finger, ischemic anesthesia was induced in another finger. Effects of tactile or movement interference were examined during electrical stimulation to the selected finger by applying tactile stimulation to

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) may contribute to cognitive decline through structural degeneration and brain reorganization, as posited by the sensory deprivation theory. These processes can be characterized by topological changes, such as strengthening and weakening of structural connections between brain regions. Stronger connections are more relevant to reorganization, as reorganization is thought to support speech processing by recruiting additional brain networks as a compensatory mechanism. We investigated connectivity changes associated with ARHL to improve the understanding of the sen

PURPOSE/AIM: Rett (RTT) syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder, results from loss-of-function mutations in methyl-CpG-binding protein 2. We studied activity-dependent plasticity induced by sensory deprivation via whisker trimming in early symptomatic male mutant mice to assess neural rewiring capability.
METHODS: One whisker was trimmed for 0-14 days and intrinsic optical imaging of the transient reduction of brain blood oxygenation resulting from neural activation by 1 second of wiggling of the whisker stump was compared to that of an untrimmed control whisker.
RESULTS: Cortical evoked res

Golgi staining of neuronal cell types in the optic lobe rudiments of adult eyeless flies of the sine oculis (so) mutant of Drosophila melanogaster reveals partial independence of optic lobe's development from compound eye formation. (1) Differentiation and maintenance of many neuronal cell types of medulla and lobular complex do not require innervation of the medulla from the retina and the lamina. Neurons derived from the outer and inner optic anlage have been found in adult eyeless flies. (2) The rudiments of ipsilateral medulla, lobula, and lobular plate are isotopically connected with each

OBJECTIVE: Neuroplasticity refers to the tendency of the nervous system to change structurally and functionally due to experience. The adult visual cortex was historically presumed rigid and unchangeable. However, recent research has identified residual neuroplasticity in the visual cortex extending into adulthood, which may be mediated by environmental factors including visual deprivation. Eagleman and Vaughn proposed the Defensive Activation Theory (DAT) in 2021, which posits a role for rapid eye movement sleep (REMS)-related dreaming in preventing neuroplastic loss of visual function during

Sensory deprivation theory is an important hypothesis involving potential pathways between hearing loss and cognitive impairment in patients with presbycusis. The theory suggests that prolonged auditory deprivation in presbycusis, including neural deafferentation, cortical reallocation, and atrophy, causes long-lasting changes and reorganization in brain structure and function. However, neurophysiological changes underlying the cognition-ear link have not been explored. In this study, we recruited 98 presbycusis patients and 60 healthy controls and examined the differences between the two grou

Cortical areas have the capacity of large-scale reorganization following sensory deafferentation. However, it remains unclear whether this phenomenon is a unique process that homogeneously affects the entire deprived cortical region or whether it is susceptible to changes depending on neuronal networks across distinct cortical layers. Here, we studied how the local circuitry within each layer of the deafferented cortex forms the basis for neuroplastic changes after immediate thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) in anaesthetized rats. In vivo electrophysiological recordings from deafferented hindl

The aim of the current study was to provide normative data on spontaneous locomotion and posture behavior in developing rats (Rattus norvegicus), during the first 2 postnatal weeks. Male and female rat pups were tested daily from P1 (postnatal day 1; ∼24 hr after birth) to P15 in a sensory-enriched or sensory-deprived testing environment, which was enclosed in a temperature-controlled incubator. Pups in the sensory-deprived condition were tested individually and placed in a square, Plexiglas box (open-field) for a 20-min test period. Pups in the sensory-enriched condition were placed in the sa

The effect of sensory deprivation or electrical stimulation on vestibular compensation was investigated for 7 days after unilateral labyrinthectomy (ULX) in 50 rabbits. Eye movements induced by sinusoidal rotation of the whole body and spontaneous nystagmus were measured for vestibulo-ocular compensation, and head deviation was measured for vestibulospinal compensation. The rabbits were divided into 4 groups: one with ULX only (LX only), ULX with bilateral tarsorrhaphy (LX+TX), ULX with cervical dorsal root ganglionectomy (LX+GX), and a group stimulated electrically on the lesion-sided vestibu

Lifelong auditory and visual sensory deprivation have been demonstrated to alter both perceptual acuity and the neural processing of remaining senses. Recently, it was demonstrated that individuals with anosmia, i.e. complete olfactory sensory deprivation, displayed enhanced multisensory integration performance. Whether this ability is due to a reorganization of olfactory processing regions to focus on cross-modal multisensory information or whether it is due to enhanced processing within multisensory integration regions is not known. To dissociate these two outcomes, we investigated the neura

Early loss of one sensory system can cause improved function of other sensory systems. However, both the time course and neuronal mechanism of cross-modal plasticity remain elusive. Recent study using functional MRI in humans suggests a role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in cross-modal plasticity. Since this phenomenon is assumed to be associated with altered GABAergic inhibition in the PFC, we have tested the hypothesis that early postnatal sensory deprivation causes the changes of inhibitory neuronal circuit in different regions of the PFC of the mice. We determined the effects of sensory d

We review here studies with visual and auditory deprived/recovery populations to argue for the need of a redefinition of the crucial role of unisensory-specific experiences during critical periods (CPs) on the emergence of sensory specializations. Specifically, we highlight that these studies, with emphasis on results with congenitally blind adults using visual sensory-substitution devices, consistently document that typical specializations (e.g., in visual cortex) could arise also in adulthood via other sensory modalities (e.g., audition), even after relatively short (tailored) trainings. BACKGROUND: Visual sensory processing deficits are consistently observed in schizophrenia, with clear amplitude reduction of the visual evoked potential (VEP) during the initial 50-150 ms of processing. Similar deficits are seen in unaffected first-degree relatives and drug-naïve first-episode patients, pointing to these deficits as potential endophenotypic markers. Schizophrenia is also associated with deficits in neural plasticity, implicating dysfunction of both glutamatergic and GABAergic systems. Here, we sought to understand the intersection of these two domains, asking whether short-ter
