Characterizing sensory thresholds and intensity sensitivity of Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces: A Case Study.

Current prosthetic limbs offer little to no sensory feedback. Developments in peripheral nerve interfaces provide opportunities to restore some level of tactile feedback that is referred to the prosthetic limb. One such method is a Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI), composed of a muscle graft wrapped around a free nerve ending. Here, we characterize perception and discomfort thresholds, as well as sensitivity to stimulation through two-alternative forced choice discrimination tasks. One person with transradial amputation who had one RPNI constructed from the median nerve and two c

Sensory function assessment of the human male lower urinary tract using current perception thresholds.

AIMS: To evaluate the feasibility and reliability of current perception threshold (CPT) measurement for sensory assessment of distinct locations in the male lower urinary tract (LUT). METHODS: Twelve male subjects (>18 years) without LUT symptoms or medical comorbidities were eligible. CPTs were determined twice (interval: 7-20 days) at the bladder dome, trigone and the proximal, membranous, and distal urethra. Square wave electrical stimulation of 3 Hz/0.2 ms and 0.5 Hz/1 ms was applied using a transurethral 8F catheter placed under fluoroscopic control. Bladder volume was kept constant (60

Sensory and motor thresholds of transcutaneous electrical stimulation are influenced by gender and age.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (ES) is a therapeutic procedure used in rehabilitation. However, the effectiveness of it depends on sensory responses to pain and motor control in neuromuscular recruitment, considering the differences related to gender and age of the subjects treated, as well as the intensity and frequency of ES. OBJECTIVE: To determine the threshold of sensory perception (TSP) and the threshold of motor response (TMR) in young and elderly individuals of both genders. DESIGN: Randomized controlled clinical trial. SETTING: General community. PARTICIPANTS: E

Multi-threshold synaptic transistor for an artificial sensory-pain integrated receptor.

Pain is a simple yet effective self-defense mechanism in humans that enables rapid responses to harmful stimuli. The inability to sense pain increases the risk of injury due to delayed reactions to such stimuli. However, current prostheses often struggle to differentiate between sensory and pain-like signals and require complex systems to achieve this functionality. In this study, we developed an artificial receptor capable of detecting both sensory and pain-like signals with the threshold discrimination and memory functions intrinsically embedded in the transistor. This functionality was real

Advancing Laryngeal Adductor Reflex Testing Beyond Sensory Threshold Detection.

Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing with sensory testing (FEESST) is a promising clinical tool to assess airway integrity via the laryngeal adductor reflex (LAR). The current clinical protocol relies on sensory threshold detection, as relatively little is known about the motor response of this sensorimotor airway protective reflex. Here, we focused on characterizing normative LAR motion dynamics in 20 healthy young participants using our prototype high-pressure syringe-based air pulse device and analytic software (VFtrack™) that tracks vocal fold (VF) motion in endoscopic videos. Assessment of sensory sensitivity through critical flicker fusion frequency thresholds after a maximum voluntary apnoea.

INTRODUCTION: The influence of acute exercise on sensory sensitivity (SS) differs according to the type and duration of exercise performed. In the present study, we assessed changes on SS soon after a maximal dynamic apnoea. METHODS: Thirty-nine experienced male breath-hold divers were recruited. Critical flicker fusion frequency (CFFF) thresholds were used to measure SS. Thresholds were determined before and after a maximal dynamic apnoea. Immediately after surfacing, heart rate and oxygen saturation (SpO2) were recorded for two minutes. RESULTS: After maximal dynamic apnoea, SpO2 was signi

Sensory properties of selected terpenes. Thresholds for odor, nasal pungency, nasal localization, and eye irritation.

We tested four normosmics and four anosmics in detection thresholds for six terpenes commonly found indoors: cumene, p-cymene, delta-3-carene, linalool, 1,8-cineole and geraniol. Normosmics provided odor thresholds and anosmics provided nasal pungency thresholds. All subjects provided nasal localization (i.e., right/left nostril) and eye irritation thresholds. Each type of threshold was measured eight times per subject-stimulus combination. Stimuli were presented from squeeze bottles in a two-alternative forced-choice procedure via an ascending method of limits. Odor thresholds ranged between

Quantitative determinations of sensory and pain thresholds on human oral mucosa by argon laser stimulation.

High-energy light from an argon laser was applied to human oral mucosa in order to investigate regional pain sensitivity. Significant regional differences in sensory and pain thresholds were observed between the test sites on the hard and soft palatal mucosa, the buccal mucosa, the tongue, the lower lip, and the skin on the hand. Pain thresholds were lowest on the tip of the tongue and highest on the hard palate. Sensory and pain thresholds were influenced by different stimulus parameters: pulse duration and laser beam diameter. Blackening of the mucosa in regions with high optical reflectance

Sensory detection of threshold intensity resistive loads in severe obstructive sleep apnoea.

Respiratory related evoked potentials (RREPs) were used to investigate whether sensory detection of small mid-inspiratory resistive loads (≈1.2-6.2 cmH2OL-1s), delivered during wakefulness, was impaired in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). It was reasoned that impaired detection of minor airway patency challenge may lead to difficult-to-remedy further collapse. There was a significant reduction in OSA (n=16) vs. control (n=17) participants in the slope of the relationship between the P1 RREP component amplitude, which reflects arrival of somatosensory information at the cortex, and stimulus inte

The effects of electroacupuncture on analgesia and peripheral sensory thresholds in patients with burn scar pain.

The aim of this study is to observe if the effects of electro-acupuncture (EA) on analgesia and peripheral sensory thresholds are transposable from the model of heat pain in volunteers to the clinical setting of burn scar pain. After severe burns, pathological burn scars (PPBS) may occur with excruciating pain that respond poorly to treatment and prevent patients from wearing their pressure garments, thereby leading to unesthetic and function-limiting scars. EA might be of greater benefit in terms of analgesia and functional recovery, should it interrupt this vicious circle by counteracting th

The assessment of sensory detection thresholds on the perineum and breast compared with control body sites.

INTRODUCTION: Few studies explored multiple sensory detection thresholds on the perineum and breast, but these normative data may provide standards for clinical conditions such as aging, genital and breast surgeries, pathological conditions affecting the genitals, and sexual function. AIMS: The aim of this study was to provide normative data on sensory detection thresholds of three sensory modalities on the perineum and breast. METHODS: Thirty healthy women aged between 18 and 35 years were assessed on the perineum (clitoris, labia minora, vaginal, and anal margin), breast (lateral, areola,

The role of tuning curve variables and threshold measures in the estimation of sensory cell loss.

Auditory-evoked potential tuning curves were collected at six frequencies before and 30 days after various noise exposures in 363 chinchillas using a simultaneous masking paradigm. Traditional bivariate and multiple linear regression/correlation analyses were performed in an effort to determine the extent to which sensory cell damage could be estimated from a knowledge of audiometric and tuning curve variables. The results showed strong correlations between percent outer hair cell (%OHC) loss and permanent threshold shift (PTS) and between %OHC loss and the tuning curve variables Q10 dB and hi

Vibrotactile perception threshold measurements for diagnosis of sensory neuropathy. Description of a reference population.

Recognition of the fact that impairment of the tactile sense may occur independently of other disturbances in the vibration syndrome has rekindled an interest in developing a diagnostic method for early detection of vibration-induced neuropathy. There is also evidence suggesting that vibrotactile measurements represent a valuable diagnostic tool in compressive neuropathies, such as the carpal tunnel syndrome. The method may also become useful for diagnosing sensory neuropathies caused by other factors, such as solvents, pesticides, heavy metals, alcoholism, and diabetes. However, before vibrot

IA current compared to low threshold calcium current in cranial sensory neurons.

Whole-cell recordings of cranial sensory neurons were obtained with CsCl- and tetraethylammonium (TEA)-loaded cells as used for ICa studies. When replacing calcium (Ca) with potassium (K) in the external medium, a transient inward current developed at low threshold, if the holding potential was below -100 mV. Its activation started above -60 mV and reached its maximum at -20 mV. Its reversal potential followed the predicted value of the K equilibrium potential (EK) characteristic of a K current. Pharmacologically, it resembles the classical outward A current since it is insensitive to TEA up t
