Detection of West Nile virus in six mosquito species in synchrony with seroconversion among sentinel chickens in India.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is a zoonotic flavivirus maintained in mosquito-bird transmission cycle. Although humans are accidental hosts, fatal outcomes following WNV infection have been reported from India. Studies have identified WNV as an important etiological agent causing acute encephalitis syndrome in Assam, Northeast India. While circulation of WNV is evident, the role of vectors and avian hosts involved in the transmission remains unclear. In this study we identified local mosquito species for evidence of WNV infection along with seroconversion among sentinel chickens. METHODS:

Mercury concentration in the sentinel fish species Orthopristis ruber: Effects of environmental and biological factors and human risk assessment.

The present study aimed to assess corocoro grunt use as bioindicator of Hg contamination in coastal marine systems by testing environmental (seasons) and biological effects (sexual maturity, size and weight) on THg accumulation and assessing human health risk. Fish was captured in winter and summer seasons at Vermelha Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Southeast Brazil. Adult O. ruber showed significantly higher THg than juveniles, and THg concentrations were positively correlated to fish length and weight. Fish THg concentrations did not differ between seasons and were below the accepted limit for human

Leveraging animal tracking to combat wildlife crime: GPS-tagged vultures and wolves as sentinels of other species' poaching.

From satellite imagery to drones or camera traps, remote technologies are increasingly used to enhance wildlife crime detection worldwide. Whereas remotely tracking individuals allows for prompt detection of their illegal persecution, much less attention (concentrated in oceanic ecosystems) has been paid to tagged animals as sentinels to detect other species' poaching through their interspecific interactions. We illustrate this potential in terrestrial ecosystems by showing how GPS-tagged vultures, able to quickly locate dead animals, and GPS-collared wolves enabled the detection of poached wi

High-throughput proteome dynamics for discovery of key proteins in sentinel species: Unsuspected vitellogenins diversity in the crustacean Gammarus fossarum.

UNLABELLED: In environmental science, omics-based approaches are widely used for the identification of gene products related to stress response. However, when dealing with non-model species, functional prediction of genes is challenging. Indeed, functional predictions are often obtained by sequence similarity searches and functional data from phylogenetically distant organisms, which can lead to inaccurate predictions due to quite different evolutionary scenarios. In oviparous females, vitellogenin production is vital for embryonic development, ensuring population viability. Its abnormal prese

Multi-branch and multi-label tree species classification using deep learning for UAV aerial photography and Sentinel remote sensing images.

The classification and identification of forest tree species is of great value in the study of species diversity and forest monitoring. With the development of emerging technologies, the combination of remote sensing images and deep learning methods has become an important means to study multi-label image classification. However, nowadays, due to the small difference between tree species images, the difficulty of artificial labeling, and the difficulty of obtaining data sets, there are few studies on multi-label classification for tree species images. Therefore, taking the TreeSatAI dataset as

Assessing environmental contamination around obsolete pesticide stockpiles in West Africa: using the Nile monitor (Varanus niloticus) as a sentinel species.

Environmental contamination caused by obsolete pesticide stocks was assessed using the Nile monitor (Varanus niloticus) as a sentinel species. Organochlorines and organophosphates were quantified by gas chromatography in abdominal fat and the liver, respectively. Results were compared to those obtained from three other sites, characterized by different histories of contamination. None of the previously stocked pesticides were recovered. Low to moderate levels of 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (4,4'-DDE) were quantified in monitors from all sites. Malathion and 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyldichl

Seroprevalence of West Nile and Usutu viruses in military working horses and dogs, Morocco, 2012: dog as an alternative WNV sentinel species?

A serosurvey of 349 military working horses and 231 military working dogs was conducted in ten sites in Morocco in 2012. This survey revealed a high level of exposure of these animals to flaviviruses: seroprevalence rates of 60% in horses and of 62% in dogs were observed using a competitive West Nile virus (WNV) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA). Seroneutralization test results showed that the majority of cELISA-positive results were due to exposure to WNV. Further assays conducted in vaccinated horses with a DIVA (Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals) test indicated that

Metabarcoding detection of Vibrio species in black-tailed gulls reveals seabirds as overlooked sentinels of coastal zoonotic risk in South Korea.

The interface between urban coastal development and wildlife ecology creates critical, yet often overlooked, pathways for pathogen dissemination. This study evaluated the role of migratory Black-tailed Gulls (Larus crassirostris) as sentinels of zoonotic risk at the land-sea interface in South Korea. Using a two-tiered surveillance framework, we analyzed 75 faecal samples collected from anthropogenically influenced coastal sites (March-July 2023) by combining 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding with species-specific PCR targeting clinically relevant Vibrio spp. Metabarcoding detected Vibrio sequences

Acute styrene exposure induces hepatocellular injury and molecular stress responses in Oryzias celebensis: Evidence for a tropical sentinel species in ecotoxicological monitoring.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Plastic-derived monomers such as styrene are increasingly detected in tropical freshwater ecosystems at concentrations approaching 0.8 mg/L. These contaminants pose toxicological risks to aquatic organisms, particularly through oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic disruption. Oryzias celebensis (Celebes medaka), an endemic tropical freshwater species, offers high ecological relevance for assessing pollutant impacts in Southeast Asia. This study evaluated the hepatic histopathological and molecular responses of O. celebensis following acute styrene exposure and asse

Maternal-fetal transfer of essential and non-essential metals and metalloids in the Brazilian Guitarfish (Pseudobatos horkelii) and its promising use as a sentinel species.

Environmental contamination represents an increasing threat to the reproductive success of marine vertebrates, particularly viviparous species. This study investigated the maternal-fetal transfer, tissue distribution, and potential biological effects of essential, toxic, and potentially toxic metals and metalloids in the critically endangered Brazilian guitarfish (Pseudobatos horkelii), assessing its suitability as a sentinel species for coastal contamination. Liver and muscle tissues from pregnant and non-pregnant females and their embryos collected in southeastern Brazil were analyzed using

Medaka (Oryzias latipes) as a sentinel species for aquatic animals: Medaka cells exhibit a similar genotoxic response as North Atlantic right whale cells.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is emerging as a major concern for aquatic environments, particularly marine environments. Medaka (Oryzias latipes) has been used as a model species for human and aquatic health, including the marine environment, though few studies have directly compared toxicological responses in medaka to humans or other aquatic species. We used a medaka fin cell line to compare the genotoxic response of medaka to Cr(VI) to the response observed in North Atlantic right whale cells to see if responses in medaka were similar to those of other aquatic species, particularly aquatic m

Persistence of PFOA Pollution at a PTFE Production Site and Occurrence of Replacement PFASs in English Freshwaters Revealed by Sentinel Species, the Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra).

Concentrations of 33 PFASs were determined in 20 Eurasian otters, sampled 2015-2019, along a transect away from a factory, which used PFOA in PTFE manufacture. Despite cessation of usage in 2012, PFOA concentrations remained high near the factory (>298 μg/kg ww <20 km from factory) and declined with increasing distance (<57 μg/kg ww >150 km away). Long-chain legacy PFASs dominated the Σ33PFAS profile, particularly PFOS, PFOA, PFDA, and PFNA. Replacement compounds, PFECHS, F-53B, PFBSA, PFBS, PFHpA, and 8:2 FTS, were detected in ≥19 otters, this being the first report of PFBSA and PFECHS in the

Sentinel site-enhanced near-real time surveillance documenting West Nile virus circulation in two Culex mosquito species indicating different transmission characteristics, Djibouti City, Djibouti.

The Horn of Africa represents a region formerly known to be highly susceptible to mosquito-borne infectious diseases. In order to investigate whether autochthonous WNV transmission occurs in the Djibouti City area, in how far, and which of, the endemic Culex mosquito species are involved in WNV circulation activity, and whether sentinel site-enhanced near-real time surveillance (SSE-NRTS) may increase WNV detection sensitivity, mosquito vector monitoring was conducted from January 2010 to June 2012. Six monitoring locations, including two identified sentinel sites, considered most probable for

Emergence of Colistin Resistance in Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella Species From Central India: A Sentinel Study With the Detection of mcr-1 From Blood Isolates.

Background and objectives Colistin is increasingly reserved for the treatment of severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria; however, emerging resistance is progressively limiting its clinical effectiveness. Although antimicrobial resistance surveillance has expanded in several regions of India, clinical data from Central India remain limited. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of colistin resistance among MDR Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. inbloodstream isolates from Central India and to determine the presence of the plasmid-mediated mcr-1 gene

West Nile virus surveillance using sentinel birds.

Captive and free-ranging birds have been used for decades as living sentinels in arbovirus surveillance programs. This review summarizes information relevant to selecting sentinel bird species for use in surveillance of West Nile (WN) virus. Although experience using avian sentinels for WN virus surveillance is limited, sentinels should be useful for both detecting and monitoring WN virus transmission; however, sentinel bird surveillance systems have yet to be adequately tested for use with the North American strain of WN virus. Captive chickens are typically used for arbovirus surveillance, b

Evaluation of surveillance methods for detection of West Nile virus activity in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, 2004-2006.

A 3-year study was conducted to determine if testing mosquitoes collected in modified sentinel chicken boxes for West Nile virus (WNV) or testing sentinel chickens for WNV antibody would detect WNV activity before onset of human cases in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA. In each year mosquitoes tested positive for WNV before the onset of human cases were detected, but seroconversions of sentinel chickens were detected after the human cases occurred. In 1 year we also compared the effectiveness of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) light traps, gravid traps, and sentinel chicken box tr

Lack of Evidence of Sylvatic Transmission of Dengue Viruses in the Amazon Rainforest Near Iquitos, Peru.

Dengue viruses (DENV) are currently responsible for more human morbidity and mortality than any other known arbovirus, and all four DENV are known to exist in sylvatic cycles that might allow these viruses to persist if the urban (Aedes aegypti) cycle could be controlled. To determine whether DENV were being maintained in a sylvatic cycle in a forested area about 14 km southwest of Iquitos, Peru, a city in which all 4 serotypes of DENV circulate, we placed 20 DENV seronegative Aotus monkeys in cages either in the canopy or near ground level for a total of 125.6 months. Despite capturing >66,00

Improving the Efficiency and Safety of Sentinel Stink Bug Eggs Using X-rays.

Sentinel eggs used to monitor field parasitism of stink bug pests (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) can only be deployed for a few days to avoid releasing the pest in the monitored area. Using sterile eggs removes the risk of accidental pest introduction and extends deployment time. Freezing the eggs before deployment is one common method of sterilizing sentinel eggs. However, some egg parasitoid species have low or no parasitism on frozen eggs. In this study, X-ray irradiation was used to sterilize Bagrada hilaris sentinel eggs intended for monitoring parasitism by Gryon aetherium (Hymenoptera: Sceli

Host Associations Of Biting Midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae: Culicoides) Near Sentinel Chicken Surveillance Locations In Florida, USA.

Quantifying host use is important for understanding transmission of vector-borne pathogens. Despite the importance of biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in pathogen transmission, the vector-host relationships of most Culicoides species are poorly documented, even in locations where active arbovirus surveillance is conducted. Polymerase chain reaction-based blood-meal analysis was performed on 663 blood-engorged Culicoides females collected by 7 Florida mosquito control districts at 24 sentinel chicken arbovirus surveillance sites in 2017. A total of 638 blood meals were successfully anal

An Evaluation of the Flea Index as a Predictor of Plague Epizootics in the West Nile Region of Uganda.

Plague is a low incidence flea-borne zoonosis that is often fatal if treatment is delayed or inadequate. Outbreaks occur sporadically and human cases are often preceded by epizootics among rodents. Early recognition of epizootics coupled with appropriate prevention measures should reduce plague morbidity and mortality. For nearly a century, the flea index (a measure of fleas per host) has been used as a measure of risk for epizootic spread and human plague case occurrence, yet the practicality and effectiveness of its use in surveillance programs has not been evaluated rigorously. We sought to
