Target tissue influences the peripheral trajectory of mouse primary sensory olfactory axons.

Primary olfactory neurons situated in the nasal septum project axons within fascicles along a highly stereotypical trajectory en route to the olfactory bulb. The ventral fascicles make a distinct dorsovental turn at the rear of the septum so as to reach the olfactory bulb. In the present study we have used a brain and nasal septum coculture system to examine the role of target tissue on the peripheral trajectory of olfactory sensory axons. In cultures of isolated embryonic nasal septa, olfactory axons form numerous parallel fascicles that project caudally in the submucosa, as they do in vivo.

Chronic schizophrenia with the absence of the septum pellucidum: A case report.

The absence of the septum pellucidum is a rare brain abnormality, especially when it co-occurs with schizophrenia. This report describes an unusual case of a middle-aged adult with chronic schizophrenia found to be missing the septum pellucidum. The relationship of the septum pellucidum to the other structures in the limbic system suggests that disturbance of the septum pellucidum may have a role in the neurological etiology of schizophrenia.

[Agenesis septum pellucidum in a schizophrenic patient].

Absence of the septum pellucidum is a rare developmental disorder of the human brain. Previous reports focused on the association with other cerebral anomalies. We present MRI scans showing an isolated absence of the septum pellucidum. The patient was suffering from a schizophrenic psychosis. Mental retardation or epileptic seizures, which are often found in more complex developmental brain disorders, were not observed. The septal area is part of the limbic system and aplasia of the septum pellucidum could indicate developmental anomalies of the limbic system. The concept of cerebral maldevelo

Unreported anatomical variation of septum pellucidum.

During gross anatomy dissections of the brain, a developmental abnormality of the septum pellucidum was found in a 31-year-old male cadaver. Other parts of the central nervous system in this cadaver were normal in every aspect. Histological samples were taken from the neighboring areas of this abnormality, and they were examined under light microscope and scanning electron microscope. In this abnormality of the septum pellucidum, the two laminae of the septum pellucidum were fused together and there was a hole located 1 cm anterior to its apex. The maximum diameter of the hole was 0.5 cm in th

Cytoplasmic progestin-receptors in guinea pig brain: characteristics and relationship to the induction of sexual behavior.

The synthetic progestin, R 5020, was used to measure cytoplasmic progestin receptors in the brain and pituitary gland of ovariectomized guinea pigs. Progestin receptors with a dissociation constant of 0.1--0.3 nM were measured by gel filtration in all brain regions studied, pituitary gland and the uterus. The receptor is progestin-specific; biologically potent progestins compete well against [3H]R 5020 for binding, but androgens, glucocorticoids and estrogens do not. The concentration of the cytoplasmic progestin receptor in hypothalamus-preoptic area-septum and midbrain is decreased in vivo b

Midline Brain Abnormalities Across Psychotic and Mood Disorders.

Patients with schizophrenia are known to have increased prevalence of abnormalities in midline brain structures, such as a failure of the septum pellucidum to fuse (cavum septum pellucidum) and the absence of the adhesio interthalamica. This is the first study to investigate the prevalence of these abnormalities across a large multidiagnostic sample. Presence of cavum septum pellucidum and absence of the adhesio interthalamica was assessed in 639 patients with chronic schizophrenia, delusional disorder, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, or a first episode o

Dietary choline reverses some, but not all, effects of folate deficiency on neurogenesis and apoptosis in fetal mouse brain.

In mice, maternal dietary folate, a cofactor in 1-carbon metabolism, modulates neurogenesis and apoptosis in the fetal brain. Similarly, maternal dietary choline, an important methyl-donor, also influences these processes. Choline and folate are metabolically interrelated, and we determined whether choline supplementation could reverse the effects of folate deficiency on brain development. Timed-pregnant mice were fed control (CT), folate-deficient (FD), or folate-deficient, choline-supplemented (FDCS) AIN-76 diets from d 11 to 17 (E11-17) of pregnancy, and on E17, fetal brains were collected

The syndrome of the absence of a septum pellucidum with porencephaly.

Two cases of a complex brain malformation including the absence of a septum pellucidum and bilateral porencephaly were reported and compared with Aicardi's cases. The two cases have congenital hemiplegia or double hemiplegia and mental retardation, and one of them has optic atrophy. CT scans revealed the absence of a septum pellucidum and a specific position and shape of the clefts. The syndrome of the absence of a septum pellucidum and porencephaly may represent a specific type of true porencephaly, and the cause must occur before 16 weeks of gestation.

Difficult early sonographic diagnosis of absence of the fetal septum pellucidum.

Standard sonographic views of the brain obtained along the axial planes at mid-gestation failed to identify absence of the septum pellucidum in two consecutive fetuses. It was presumably the close proximity of the walls of the lateral ventricles that generated an artifact resembling a normal cavum septi pellucidi. In one of these fetuses, septo-optic dysplasia was confirmed by magnetic resonance demonstration of hypoplastic optic tracts. In the other fetus, isolated absence of the septum pellucidum was the final diagnosis. Standard axial scans are unreliable in predicting absence of the septum

A case of closedlip schizencephaly with absent septum pellucidum in an adult presenting with seizure disorder.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: To rule out underlying developmental brain defects such as schizencephaly, pediatric seizures necessitate a thorough examination. Adults who receive a diagnosis later in life may face severe management and prognosis difficulties. To avoid underdiagnosis of developing brain abnormalities, imaging should be a part of the workup for pediatric seizures. Imaging is critical to the diagnosis and therapy of such cases. ABSTRACT: Closed-lip schizencephaly with the absence of the septum pellucidum is a rare congenital malformation of the brain that can be associated with a variet

Cavum vergae. Association with neurologic abnormality and diagnosis by magnetic resonance imaging.

Cavum vergae is a cavity posterior to the septum pellucidum whose clinical significance has previously been unclear. Ten children are described who presented with neurologic findings and were found to have a cavum vergae or cavum vergae and cavum septum pellucidum by brain computed tomographic (CT) scan. Of the ten patients, five had delayed development, four had macrocephaly, two had learning disabilities, two had abnormal electroencephalograms, and one had Apert's syndrome. No cases of cavum vergae were found in 50 children who had brain CT scans for head trauma. These observations suggest t

Sellar cysticercosis and septum pellucidum cyst: a case report and review of the literature.

Sellar cysticercosis is a rare form of neurocysticercosis. A septum pellucidum cysts is a rare, often asymptomatic cystic structure between the lateral ventricles. We report here a male patient with sellar cysticercosis and septum pellucidum cysts who was successfully treated by neuroendoscopic resection. The patient was a 28-year-old male who presented with intermittent headaches for 5 years. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed a well-circumscribed 13 mm cystic space-occupying lesion in the sellar region and the cavum septum pellucidum. The cyst in the saddle area was com

Isolated absence of the septum pellucidum.

Absence of the septum pellucidum in the human is a rare congenital anomaly. Previous reports suggest it is almost always associated with other brain anomalies. However, MRI in two patients with absence of the septum pellucidum presented here, indicates that this anomaly may occur without associated anomalies. It may be one manifestation of a spectrum of developmental anomalies. One patient presented with schizophrenic psychosis; developmental disturbances in limbic areas are believed to be associated with schizophrenia. Agenesis of the septum pellucidum may indicate abnormal development of lim

Spatial brain structures are selectively preserved during aging in homing pigeons (Columba livia), an avian spatial specialist.

Pigeons (Columba livia) rely heavily on spatial cognition for navigation. As such, this species is commonly used to investigate the neural correlates of spatial behaviours in birds, particularly the hippocampus and septum. As this species can live for decades when housed in the laboratory, several studies have recently used pigeons to examine long-term effects of aging on the brain, a concept that is less well-understood in birds compared to mammals. Studies assessing age-related structural plasticity in the pigeon brain have yielded mixed findings, possibly due to methodological differences.

Morphological characteristics of interalveolar septum and mandible in BMAL1 gene knockout mice.

PURPOSE: Circadian rhythm is associated with the pathogenesis of systemic disease and bone mineral metabolism. This study aimed to radiographically evaluate morphological characteristics of the interalveolar septum in circadian rhythm deficient animals. METHODS: Heads of 10 brain and muscle arnt-like protein-1 (BMAL1)-knockout (KO) mice and 10 wild-type mice sacrificed at 36 weeks were imaged using micro-computed tomography. The mean depth from the cementoenamel junction to the alveolar ridge (virtual bone sounding: VBS) of the interalveolar septum between the first and second molars, and the

Symptomatic Cavum Septum Pellucidum Cyst: A Rare Presentation.

A cavum septum pellucidum is a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) filled cavity situated between the lateral ventricles and is considered as a normal anatomic variant sporadically seen on neuroimaging. While a cavum septum pellucidum is a relatively uncommon incidental neuroimaging finding, symptomatic cysts of the cavum septum pellucidum are very rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature so far. They are defined as fluid-filled structures with lateral bowing of the walls and membranes separated by at least 10 mm or more. We present the case of a 25-year-old male patient with a rapidly exp

Methylmercury induced alterations in the nerve growth factor level in the developing brain.

Pre- and early postnatal stages in the development of the central nervous system (CNS) are very sensitive to the toxic effects of methylmercury. The influence of methylmercury on the level of nerve growth factor (NGF) during the development of CNS was studied. Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed indirectly throughout the fetal and suckling periods until weaning on postnatal day 25 (P 25) via their dams given methylmercury in the diet (3.9 mg/kg diet). In addition, after weaning offsprings were exposed directly to methylmercury via the diet until postnatal day 50 (P 50). The level of NGF was analy
