Implicit learning is intact in adult developmental dyslexic readers: evidence from the serial reaction time task and artificial grammar learning.

Previous research yielded equivocal results concerning implicit learning abilities of developmental dyslexic readers. These studies employed a sequence learning task that requires a motor response to each stimulus. However, implicit learning has been often studied using non-motor tasks. Thus, we investigated implicit learning capabilities of adult developmental dyslexic readers in two standard implicit learning paradigms differing in the involvement of the motor system, namely the serial response time task (SRTT) and artificial grammar learning (AGL).Twelve adult developmental dyslexic and twe

Using signal detection theory to model changes in serial learning of radiological image interpretation.

Signal detection theory (SDT) parameters can describe a learner's ability to discriminate (d') normal from abnormal and the learner's criterion (λ) to under or overcall abnormalities. To examine the serial changes in SDT parameters with serial exposure to radiological cases. 46 participants were recruited for this study: 20 medical students (MED), 6 residents (RES), 12 fellows (FEL), 5 staff pediatric emergency physicians (PEM), and 3 staff radiologists (RAD). Each participant was presented with 234 randomly assigned ankle radiographs using a web-based application. Participants were given a cl

Difficult ECGs in STEMI: lessons learned from serial sampling of pre- and in-hospital ECGs.

Prehospital interpretation of electrocardiograms (ECGs) is crucial to ensure early diagnosis and optimal treatment of patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Recognition of ST-segment elevations (STE) by qualified personnel in the prehospital phase has successfully reduced the delay from the first medical contact to reperfusion. A few other ECG patterns without true STE, referred to as "STEMI equivalents", bear the same prognostic significance, reflect imminent or ongoing transmural ischemia, but are less easily identified. Applying social learning theory to childhood and adolescent firesetting: can it lead to serial murder?

Despite the fact that serial murder has existed for centuries, it has been given little academic attention in the social science literature. Existing studies have primarily examined the motivational factors involved in the commission of serial murder. However, research examining the childhood and adolescent backgrounds of serial murderers is scant. Based on three case studies of serial murderers, this study contributes to the existing literature by exploring the possible link between childhood and/or adolescent fire setting and adult serial murder by applying social learning theory.

Machine learning integration of serial blood biomarkers enhances cognitive decline prediction in early Parkinson's disease.

Cognitive decline is a major non-motor complication in early Parkinson's disease (PD), but predicting its progression remains challenging. Using data from 193 participants in the Early Parkinson's Disease Longitudinal Singapore (PALS) cohort, we evaluated whether repeated blood biomarker measurements (baseline, year 3, year 5)-neurofilament light chain (NfL) and total tau (t-tau)-could improve prediction of cognitive decline, defined as a one-point annual or sustained two-year drop in Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores. We applied three variable selection methods and five machine learning mo

Deep-Learning Serial CT Prediction of Survival in Immunotherapy-Treated Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Reliable early response biomarkers for overall survival (OS) are lacking for patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Existing imaging-based measures, such as Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) and tumor volume change (TVC), have limited predictive value for long-term outcomes, and advanced imaging-based biomarkers may enhance decision-making in clinical practice and clinical trials. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a fully automated deep-learning imaging-based biomarker using pretherapy and

The operant serial implicit learning task reveals early onset motor learning deficits in the Hdh knock-in mouse model of Huntington's disease.

A range of genetic mouse models of Huntington's disease have been created. However, as knock-in models typically have milder phenotypes, they have frequently been overlooked as therapeutic tools in favour of the transgenic models that display severe behavioural symptoms. More sensitive tests are therefore required to reveal abnormalities and release the potential of knock-in lines. An implicit learning task for mice has been developed in the nine-hole operant box test apparatus, in which mice must respond to a sequence of lights in order to earn a reward. A light stimulus was presented randoml

Procedural learning is impaired in dyslexia: evidence from a meta-analysis of serial reaction time studies.

A number of studies have investigated procedural learning in dyslexia using serial reaction time (SRT) tasks. Overall, the results have been mixed, with evidence of both impaired and intact learning reported. We undertook a systematic search of studies that examined procedural learning using SRT tasks, and synthesized the data using meta-analysis. A total of 14 studies were identified, representing data from 314 individuals with dyslexia and 317 typically developing control participants. The results indicate that, on average, individuals with dyslexia have worse procedural learning abilities t

Hypofrontality in unmedicated schizophrenia patients studied with PET during performance of a serial verbal learning task.

Previous research indicates that verbal learning and memory deficits are among the most severe cognitive deficits observed in schizophrenia. However, the concomitant patterns of regional brain function associated with these deficits in schizophrenia are not well understood. The present study examined verbal-memory performance and simultaneous relative glucose metabolic rates (rGMR) with FDG PET in 20 unmedicated schizophrenia patients who met stringent memory-performance criteria and 32 age- and sex-matched normal volunteers. On a modified version of the California Verbal Learning Test, patien

The relationship between hope and learning engagement among Chinese university students: the serial mediating roles of generative AI acceptance and self-directed learning.

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has transformed higher education and created new opportunities for student learning. However, the psychological and behavioral factors associated with students' learning engagement in AI-supported learning environments remain insufficiently understood. Drawing upon Hope Theory, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and Self-directed Learning Theory, this study proposed a serial mediation model to examine the serial mediating roles of generative AI acceptance and self-directed learning in the association between hope and learn

Serial intrauterine transfusions for a hydropic fetus with severe anemia and thrombocytopenia caused by parvovirus: lessons learned.

Introduction Fetal exsanguination is a rare complication of cordocentesis. Successful correction of fetal thrombocytopenia is essential for the reduction of risks. Case Report A 25-year-old, gravida 3, P2-0-0-0-2, was referred at 27 weeks of gestation for evaluation of newly diagnosed nonimmune hydrops secondary to parvovirus infection. Despite the use of ancillary platelet transfusions to correct the severe fetal thrombocytopenia, prolonged bleeding from the cord puncture site still occurred, necessitating five intrauterine transfusions to ultimately correct the fetal anemia. Conclusions The

Effect of prenatal heat stress on brain growth and serial discrimination reversal learning in the guinea pig.

Exposure of pregnant guinea pigs to an environmental temperature of 42 degrees C for 1 hr daily on Days 20-24 of gestation resulted in a significant reduction in the birthweight and brainweight of newborn offspring. These deficits persisted to early maturity and were still evident at 250 days of age following behavioral testing. Although some degree of postnatal neurogenesis and brain growth had occurred, this was not sufficient to compensate for the retarding influence of prenatal hyperthermia. Heat stress was also observed to seriously impair learning performance on the original discriminati

Impairment of olfactory, auditory, and spatial serial reversal learning in rats recovered from pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency.

Rats that had recovered from pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency (PTD) were compared with controls for spatial, auditory, and olfactory serial reversal learning (SRL); spatial matching to sample (MTS); auditory go-no-go discrimination; and open-field exploration. PTD rats made more errors reaching criterion for SRL in all modalities but showed normal transfer effects between problems. PTD rats were also impaired in learning the go-no-go and MTS tasks and showed consistent alterations in exploratory activity. It is argued that the PTD rat, like human Korsakoff patients, have impairments of
