INTRODUCTION: Popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs) are rare in the general population, but they account for nearly 70% of peripheral arterial aneurysms. There are several possible surgical approaches including exclusion of the aneurysm and bypass grafting, or endoaneurysmorrhaphy and interposition of a prosthetic conduit. The outcomes following the first approach are favorable, but persistent blood flow in the aneurysm sac has been documented in up to one third of patients in the early post-operative setting. Complications from incompletely excluded aneurysms include aneurysm enlargement, local c

Serratia marcescens is a rare cause of musculoskeletal infections and osteomyelitis occurring most frequently in nosocomial infections, debilitated patients, drug addicts, and traumatic open wounds. It is rarely a cause of postoperative infection in elective surgery with only a few such cases being reported in the United States and European literature. The authors present a case of Serratia marcescens infection of a total joint implant from an apparent perioperative source and review the literature concerning this organism as a cause of infection in man.

Five species of bacteria known to be naturally-occurring pathogens of cats were screened for their ability to grow in feline macrophages in vitro, and to induce antibodies and delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) responses in vivo. Two of these organisms, L. monocytogenes and S. marcescens, were selected for further study based on clear-cut differences in their in vitro and in vivo behavior. Listeria was macrophage tropic, induced DTH, and evoked poor antibody responses post-recovery, whereas Serratia remained extracellular, did not induce a DTH reaction, and produced high titer of antibodies.

An outbreak of colonization and infection with Serratia marcescens occurred in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). S. marcescens was isolated from five preterm infants (gestational age 25-30 weeks). Two infants developed septicaemia, which were both fatal, and one infant (the presumed index case) had conjunctivitis due to S. marcescens. Two infants were colonized without clinical signs of infection. All infants were treated with antibiotic regimens including ciprofloxacin and gentamicin. The DNA fingerprints of isolates were determined by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus prim

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis due to Serratia spp. (S-IE) has historically been considered a rare entity. Typically linked to injection drug use (IDU), S-IE appears to be a growing problem as the harms of unsafe drug use proliferate. However, guidance on therapy for Gram-negative IE remains limited.
METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of adults treated for S-IE at 4 academic health systems in different US states from 2015 to 2021. Multivariable logistic regression analyzed the association of inpatient mortality with procedural management and combination antibiotic treatment.

Serratia (S.) marcescens is an opportunistic, gram-negative pathogen most commonly associated with respiratory tract, urinary tract, and soft-tissue infections. Reports of S. marcescens as a causative agent of infective endocarditis are rare, especially when compared with the more frequently implicated pathogens such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species. The clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, and therapeutic considerations of S. marcescens endocarditis remain poorly characterized in the literature. This case report aims to provide a detailed description of an unusual presenta

Serratia marcescens has been reported to cause infective endocarditis among intravenous drug users, but it is extremely rare in non-intravenous drug users in Japan. In this article, we report an 85-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus who presented with low-grade fever and general fatigue. She was administered intravenous prednisolone under a diagnosis of right Bell's palsy before this admission. Blood cultures revealed positive Serratia marcescens, which was complicated by multiple cerebral infarctions after admission. Transthoracic echocardiography on day 5 revealed vegetation on the mitral

A method to characterize strains of Serratia marcescens based on the PCR amplification of enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequences has been developed. The PCR fingerprints were generated from boiled supernatants prepared directly from bacterial colonies without the need for DNA extraction. The technique was applied to isolates obtained during an outbreak of pneumonia from seven mechanically ventilated patients, and its result indicated that the outbreak was due to the spread of two epidemic strains. This technique was validated by comparison with rRNA gene restriction analysis

A case of haematogenous Serratia marcescens endophthalmitis in an HIV-infected intravenous drug addict is described. The patient was admitted with fever, ocular pain and visual loss in the right eye following an i.v. injection of pulverized buprenorphine. A vitreous humor culture grew S. marcescens. The patient was treated with i.v. ceftriaxone (2 g b. i. d.), i.v. amikacin (500 mg b. i. d.) and p. o. fosfomycin (1 g q. i. d.) for three weeks. The ocular infection was cured, although the visual function was lost, leading to blindness. To our knowledge, this is the second case in the reviewed A

Clinical charts of 2,398 consecutive HIV-infected patients hospitalized over an 8-year period were reviewed retrospectively to identify all cases of Serratia infection and to evaluate the occurrence and outcome of these cases according to several epidemiological. clinical, and laboratory parameters. Seventeen of 2,398 (0.71%) patients developed Serratia marcescens infections: nine had septicaemia, six had pneumonia, one had a lymph node abscess, and one had cellulitis. All patients were severely immunocompromised, as evidenced by a mean CD4+ lymphocyte count of < 70 cells/microl and a frequent

INTRODUCTION: Mastitis is one of the most economically significant diseases in dairy cattle, and its causation by atypical environmental pathogens is gaining attention. The study investigated the involvement of Serratia marcescens in intramammary infections occurring in a dairy herd and evaluated the bacterium's antimicrobial resistance profile.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between February 2024 and June 2025, 481 quarter-milk samples collected from cows on a dairy farm in eastern Poland were subjected to routine bacteriological examination. Isolates were identified by biochemical, proteomic and mol

Serratia marcescens is a ubiquitous, facultatively anaerobic, gram-negative bacillus that has been cited to cause infection in immunocompromised populations. In the literature, S marcescens infections of the lower extremity have presented as granulomatous ulceration, abscess, bullous cellulitis, and necrotizing fasciitis. Herein we present a series of three cases of lower-extremity infections in which S marcescens was the sole or a contributing pathogen. We discuss the commonalities of these three cases as well as with those previously cited. All three patients presented with some combination

According to the literature, skin manifestations related to Serratia marcessens infections are rarely seen, and observed mostly in immunosuppressed adult patients. Cellulitis, abscess, granulomataus lesions have been reported as skin manifestations of Serratia infections. In our 2 cases with leukemia, papillovesicular rashes were observed resembling those of varicella zoster infection. Serratia marcessens was grown on blood cultures of patients susceptible to meropenem. The patients recovered from the rashes rapidly after treatment. Based on the absence of similar case reports in the literatur

Serratia species are gram-negative bacteria, which could be isolated from soil, water, plants, animals and air. They are responsible for a heterogeneous spectrum of diseases, affecting the central nervous system, the urinary tract, the respiratory tract and the bloodstream. Pulmonary involvement is rare and typically occurs in immunocompromised patients; radiological appearances include haemorrhagic bronchopneumonia, even with the development of pulmonary abscesses and cavitated parenchymal lesions, or diffuse alveolar damage. Concerning pulmonary cavities, the differential diagnosis should in

Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic gram-negative pathogen that causes pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and urinary tract infections, particularly in individuals who are immunocompromised. Although commonly associated with pulmonary infections, its involvement in pneumothorax-related infections is exceedingly rare. Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) is a life-threatening condition that can complicate underlying lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This case report describes a rare presentation of S. marcescens infection in a patient with SSP complica

Brain abscesses are a possible complication of bacterial sepsis or central nervous system infection but are uncommon in the neonatal period. Gram-negative organisms often cause them, but Serratia marcescens is an unusual cause of sepsis and meningitis in this age group. This pathogen is opportunistic and frequently responsible for nosocomial infections. Despite the existing antibiotics and modern radiological tools, mortality and morbidity remain significant in this group of patients. We report an unusual unilocular brain abscess in a preterm neonate caused by Serratia marcescens. The infectio

This report provides the first account of the pathological changes associated with infection by Serratia marcescens in an adult male axolotl. The infection resulted in septicaemia with severe multifocal necrotizing myocarditis. The latter lesion evolved to cardiac rupture, haemopericardium and death resulting from cardiac tamponade. This animal was exposed to higher than usual temperatures (24-25 °C) 2 weeks before the onset of disease and this may have resulted in immunocompromise and opportunistic bacterial infection. S. marcescens was isolated from the coelomic and pericardial cavity. Both
