PURPOSE: - Two rare and unusual cases of endogenous panophthalmitis from Serratia marcescens are presented with mechanisms for infection explored. Observations - The first patient had history of intravenous drug use (IVDU) without any medical implants. We present a unique case of S. marcescens folliculitis of the trunk in a 46-year-old woman with a history of facial acne vulgaris during her teen years. Her eruption occurred at the time of elective ambulatory surgery when she was treated with pre and post-operative antibiotics. An 81 year old female patient with chronic heart failure and atrial fibrillation receiving anticoagulant therapy, was admitted with progress … e and she died of multiple organic failure 36 hours after admission. The case of a 21-year-old man coming from rural Paraíba, northwestern Brazil, with schistosomiasis mansoni associated with Serratia marcescens bacteremia, is reported. His main complaints on admission were fever, diaphoresis and chills for ten days, and diarrhoea that lasted for four days. On physical examination he had jaundice and hepatosplenomegaly. To our knowledge this is the first case of bilateral obstructive uropathy caused by nonspecific chronic ureteritis to be reported. Prior to operation the bilateral involvement was throught to be due to a tuberculous infection or retroperitoneal fibrosis. The diagnostic difficulties were similar to those previously reported in the unilateral involvement. The focus of the infective organism found was Serratia marcescens which originated in the right kindey.

Fifteen enterobacterial strains were isolated from fresh produce. The 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that these belong to Serratia, with twelve strains showing 99.57%-99.93% and three strains showing 99.86-100% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Serratia marcescens and Serratia nematodiphila as nearest neighbors, respectively. PURPOSE: To report a case of Serratia Marcescens corneal ulcer as a complication of orthokeratology treatment.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 9-year-old male who underwent orthokeratology treatment for 6 months suffered from a corneal ulcer.
