Osteochondroma of the Sesamoid Bone: A Case Report.

Osteochondromas are the most common benign bone tumors; however, they are rarely found in the foot. To date, only three cases involving the sesamoid bone have been reported in the literature. We report the case of a 14-year-old female who presented with a 1.5-year history of foot pain and impaired gait. Clinical evaluation and imaging-including plain radiography and magnetic resonance imaging-identified a lesion in the medial sesamoid bone. The diagnosis of osteochondroma was confirmed histologically, and the lesion was excised with preservation of the sesamoid bone. Postoperatively, the patie

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the index sesamoid.

Sesamoid bone disorders are rare and usually are a result of trauma or degenerative causes. Tumors of the sesamoid bones of the hand are encountered less frequently. We report a case of an aneurysmal bone cyst of the radial index sesamoid of the hand. The tumor was treated successfully by sesamoid bone resection.

Hallux sesamoid bones. Anatomical observations with special reference to osteoarthritis and hallux valgus.

The normal characteristics of the hallux sesamoid bones were studied in 200 toes (100 dissections and 100 radiographs from patients with hallux valgus), and pathological changes were recorded. Normally each sesamoid articulated with a separate groove on the plantar surface of the first metatarsal head. A bony ridge on the head separated these grooves. Bipartite sesamoids were found in 4% of the toes. Osteoarthritic changes manifested by deformity, irregularity, lipping, cysts in the sesamoids and in the heads of the first metatarsal, and erosions in the articular surfaces were present in 32% o

Relationship Between the Intersesamoid Ligament and Sesamoid Bones in Cadaveric Feet with Hallux Valgus.

There is heterogeneity in the literature regarding the anatomy, exact location, and definition of the intersesamoid ligament (IL). Anatomic knowledge of the IL and its variations are important for surgeons who undertake corrective surgery for hallux abducto valgus (HAV). The IL was dissected in 16 feet from 32 formalin-fixed cadavers (12 females, four males; mean age at death, 76.6 years) to examine its morphology. The length, width, and thickness of its constituent bands were recorded with a digital caliper. Descriptive and correlational statistics were used to investigate the relationships b

Sesamoid and accessory bones of the hand--an epidemiologic survey in a Mediterranean population.

The prevalence and distribution of sesamoid and accessory bones in the hands is quite variable between different populations and ethnic groups. However, there are no published data on their distribution in Mediterranean populations. Studies on the validity of radiographic assessment for the presence of these bones are also lacking. A retrospective review of 442 radiographs of adult patients was performed in order to assess the incidence of sesamoid and accessory bones in the hands of a Mediterranean population. Additionally, two independent observers reviewed 174 radiographs and used the Kappa

A modified minimally invasive osteotomy for hallux valgus enables reduction of malpositioned sesamoid bones.

BACKGROUND: The current minimally invasive distal metatarsal osteotomy for hallux valgus (HV) is V-shaped, which prevents the correction of the rotational metatarsal head deformity and reduction of the sesamoid bones. We sought to determine the optimal method for sesamoid bone reduction during HV surgery. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 53 patients who underwent HV surgery between 2017 and 2019 using one of three techniques: open chevron osteotomy (n = 19), minimally invasive V-shaped osteotomy (n = 18), and a modified straight minimally invasive osteotomy (n = 16). The sesamoid p

Determination of correlation of proximal sesamoid bone osteoarthritis with high-speed furlong exercise and catastrophic sesamoid bone fracture in Thoroughbred racehorses.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether proximal sesamoid bone (PSB) articular cartilage and bone osteoarthritic changes or palmar osteochondral disease (POD) scores were associated with exercise history and catastrophic PSB fracture in Thoroughbred racehorses. SAMPLES: PSBs from 16 Thoroughbred racehorses (8 with and 8 without PSB fracture). PROCEDURES: Exercise history was collected, and total career high-speed furlongs was used as the measure of total exercise per horse. At necropsy, medial and lateral condyles of the third metacarpus from each forelimb were assigned a POD score, followed by imagin

Prevalence and distribution of sesamoid bones of the hand in Omani subjects: a radiological study.

Sesamoid bones show considerable variations in their occurrence among various ethnicities. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and distribution patterns of the sesamoid bones of the hands among Omani patients who were referred for radiological investigations. The influence of gender and different age groups on the occurrence of sesamoid bones of the hand was determined using the Chi-square test. Spearman's rank correlation was used to determine the coexistence of sesamoid bones at the metacarpophalangeal joints. A total of 541 hand radiographs were reviewed. A high prevalence of sesamoi

The prevalence of the sesamoid bones of the hand: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The literature contains various estimates of the prevalence and distribution of the sesamoid bones in the hands. The aims of this systematic review are to provide a better estimate of the frequency of hand sesamoids and its association with variables such as ancestry, gender, and side. Nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria. The pooled rates of the sensitive meta-analyses from large-sample studies in adults showed: (a) true overall rates of 99.9% for the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the thumb (MCP-I), 53% for the interphalangeal joint (IP-I), 43.4% for the MCP of the index (MCP-II),

Sesamoid bones also show functional adaptation in their microanatomy-The example of the patella in Perissodactyla.

The patella is the largest sesamoid bone of the skeleton. It is strongly involved in the knee, improving output force and velocity of the knee extensors, and thus plays a major role in locomotion and limb stability. However, the relationships between its structure and functional constraints, that would enable a better understanding of limb bone functional adaptations, are poorly known. This contribution proposes a comparative analysis, both qualitative and quantitative, of the microanatomy of the whole patella in perissodactyls, which show a wide range of morphologies, masses, and locomotor ab

[Anatomical reconstruction of fresh, malunion and nonunion of fractures of the sesamoid bones of the hallux].

BACKGROUND: Multifragmentary sesamoid bones of the hallux have established the concept of sesamoidea multipartita which is explained as a congenital characteristic of these bones. Sesamoid bones although fragmented are often asymptomatic as are, for example fragmented patellae. Evidence shows, however, that fragmentation of sesamoid bones is significantly more frequent in young people active in sports (soccer). The diagnosis of traumatic fractures and subsequent pain and disability is a challenge. Patients often present to physicians relatively late and are, therefore, treated in the acute pha

Prevalence of sesamoid bones in the interphalangeal joint of the thumb and fingers: a radiographic study.

The prevalence of sesamoid bones in the hands has been reported in some previous articles. Most of them, however, have reported sesamoid bones of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the hand and of the interphalangeal (IP) joint of the thumb. The present study investigates the prevalence of sesamoid bones of the IP joint of the thumb and fingers. A retrospective review of radiologic views of the IP joints in the thumb or fingers was performed, including a total of 650 patients (1,096 thumbs or fingers). Sesamoid bones were found in the IP joint of the thumb at 67% (212 of 318), while the index, m

Absence of the medial sesamoid bone associated with metatarsophalangeal pain.

Pain at the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint can result from inflammation, chondromalacia, flexor hallucis brevis tendinitis, osteochondritis dessecans, fracture of a sesamoid bone, avascular necrosis of sesamoids, inflamed bursae, intractable keratoses, infection, sesamoiditis, gout arthropathy, and rheumatoid arthritis. Congenital absence of a sesamoid bone is extremely rare. We present a 17-year-old male patient with pain at the plantar aspect of the right MTP joint associated with congenital absence of the medial sesamoid. There was tenderness and the range of motion was minimally res

[A long-distance runner with a painful sesamoid bone in the forefoot].

A 38-year-old long-distance runner presented with pain in the left medial forefoot. In the presence of such symptoms, consideration should be given to a disease of or injury to a sesamoid bone. Radiology revealed a fracture line through the medial sesamoid bone under the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Conservative treatment was initially ineffective. Ultimately, local injections of lidocaine-methylprednisolone at the site of the pain, in the metatarsophalangeal joint and in the fracture line brought relief. In the diagnosis of patients with pain in the medial forefoot, apart from the patient

[Diagnosis and treatment of sesamoid bone fractures in the dog foot].

Fragmentation could be due to direct injury or the fact that normal sesamoid bones are subjected to repeated stress. Osteochondrosis could also be a factor in aetiology. Multiple primordia of a fragmented sesamoid bone could produce a picture of fragmentation. Combining the results of selective clinical and radiological examination is of importance prior to proceeding to treatment. Both in chronic cases and in the event of failure of a recent fracture to heal after immobilisation, the decision will consist in surgical excision of fragments. The results of surgical treatment in seven out of ele
