Research indicates gender differences in sensitivity to psychomotor stimulants. Preclinical work investigating the interaction between drugs of abuse and sex-specific behaviors, such as sexual behavior, is critical to our understanding of such gender differences in humans. A number of behavioral paradigms can be used to model aspects of human sexual behavior in animal subjects. Although traditional assessment of the reflexive, lordosis posture of the female rat has been used to map the neuroanatomical and neurochemical systems that contribute to uniquely female copulatory behavior, the additio

The cytokine interleukin-1 (IL-1) is released by a variety of cells in response to infection or injury. IL-1 produces several neuroendocrine and behavioral effects, including a suppression of reproductive functions and goal-directed behaviors. The present study examined the effect of IL-1 on sexual behavior in male and female rats. The following behavioral tests were employed: preference for a sexually appropriate partner, proceptive (soliciting) behavior, the lordosis quotient (sexual receptivity), and mating performance. Peripheral (ip) IL-1 beta, 2 or 10 micrograms/kg, injected 2 h before t

Animals perform or terminate particular behaviors by integrating external cues and internal states through neural circuits. Identifying neural substrates and their molecular modulators promoting or inhibiting animal behaviors are key steps to understand how neural circuits control behaviors. Here, we identify the Cholecystokinin-like peptide Drosulfakinin (DSK) that functions at single-neuron resolution to suppress male sexual behavior in Drosophila. We found that Dsk neurons physiologically interact with male-specific P1 neurons, part of a command center for male sexual behaviors, and functio

Drugs of abuse act on the brain circuits mediating motivation and reward associated with natural behaviors. There is ample evidence that drugs of abuse impact male and female sexual behavior. First, the current review discusses the effect of drugs of abuse on sexual motivation and performance in male and female humans. In particular, we discuss the effects of commonly abused drugs including psychostimulants, opiates, marijuana/THC, and alcohol. In general, drug use affects sexual motivation, arousal, and performance and is commonly associated with increased sexual risk behaviors. Second, studi

The pattern of results from the studies reviewed above indicates that alcohol, morphine, nicotine, marijuana, and possibly cocaine can influence reproductive aspects of the neurobehavioral sexual differentiation process to varying degrees. However, with the exception of alcohol, little is currently known regarding the effects of these drugs on nonreproductive sex-related behaviors. Future studies are needed to define the extent of perinatal disruption induced by each drug on the nonreproductive aspect of the sexual differentiation process. It is increasingly clear that the neurobehavioral deve

This review catalogs effects of peptides on various aspects of animal and human behavior as published in the journal Peptides in its first twenty years. Topics covered include: activity levels, addiction behavior, ingestive behaviors, learning and memory-based behaviors, nociceptive behaviors, social and sexual behavior, and stereotyped and other behaviors. There are separate tables for these behaviors and a short introduction for each section.

The neurobiological bases of human sexual behavior are only partly understood. The etiology of most human sexual dysfunctions is not understood at all. Nevertheless, substantial progress has been made in the treatment of some male sexual disorders. The prime example should be erectile deficiency, where several efficient and safe treatments are available. Pharmacological treatment for premature ejaculation is also available, although it is still in an early stage. Disorders of sexual desire have attracted much attention when women are affected but far less so when men are concerned. Whereas ani

The present study investigates the effects induced by the putative DA D3 agonist 7-OH-DPAT (0.1 and 1 mg/kg, s.c.) on: (1) the sexual behavior of male rats, categorized on the basis of seven consecutive mating pre-tests as sexually-active (SA) and sexually-inactive (SI); and (2) stretching-yawning, penile erection, sedation and stereotyped behavior of the same animals. The data obtained show that 7-OH-DPAT at both doses modifies the copulatory pattern of SA rats, facilitating ejaculation mechanisms, but fails to increase the sexual drive of the animals as is evident from the ineffectiveness in

In this chapter we briefly review the evidence supporting the existence of biological influences on sexual orientation. We focus on basic research studies that have affected the estrogen synthesis during the critical periods of brain sexual differentiation in male rat offspring with the use of aromatase inhibitors, such as 1,4,6-androstatriene-3,17 (ATD) and letrozole. The results after prenatal and/or postnatal treatment with ATD reveal that these animals, when adults, show female sexual responses, such as lordosis or proceptive behaviors, but retain their ability to display male sexual activ

The effects of prolactin on animal behavior include the stimulation of novelty-induced grooming in rats. This effect has been demonstrated in hyperprolactinaemic animals bearing pituitary homografts under the kidney capsule or after intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of prolactin. Since plasma prolactin levels in hyperprolactinaemic rats are similar to those of animals injected with low doses of rat prolactin, we studied the effects of this hormone injected subcutaneously (s.c.) in a dose range of 5-50 microg/kg. Novelty-induced grooming was enhanced only in rats injected with 5 o

Disorders of sexual desire affect an estimated 30% of women in North America and Europe, with etiologies based on interpersonal, personal, and physiological factors. There are currently no pharmacological agents approved for use in the treatment of female sexual dysfunction. This is due, in part, to a focus on the effects of experimental drugs on reflexive components of sexual behavior, such as lordosis, in animal models. Here we report that PT-141, a peptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone that binds to central melanocortin receptors, selectively stimulates solicitational beh

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have shown altered sexual function in people with diabetes; basic science studies, using the streptozotocin (STZ)-induced animal model of type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1), have consistently reported decreased sexual behavior in hyperglycemic female animals, but features of sexual motivation and aggressive behavior have not been explored in these animals.
AIM: To study several parameters that denote sexual motivation in STZ-treated female rats and to compare behavioral features of sexual behavior and aggression in non-paced mating (NPM) and paced mating (PM) conditio

Despite the large body of evidence showing that prolactin (PRL) can suppress sexual behavior in humans and rodents, it is still unclear how this hormone affects sexual capacity of male subjects. Few studies have been performed on the effects of PRL on female sexual behavior. Short-term hyperprolactinaemia seems to facilitate some elements of sexual behavior in male rats. Furthermore, contrasting finding exist on the effects of drug-induced hyperprolactinaemia on sexual capacity of male animals. The possible mechanisms of action (on peripheral organs, endocrine, central) or PRL on male behavior

The effects of septal or preoptic lesions on both masculine and feminine sexual behaviors were examined in castrated adult male rats. Three weeks after brain surgery, animals were implanted with Silastic tubes containing testosterone (T) and observations of masculine sexual behavior were carried out four times every 5 days. T tubes were removed immediately after the end of the masculine behavioral tests. Two weeks later, animals implanted with Silastic tubes containing estradiol-17 beta(E2) were subjected to three feminine sexual behavioral tests at 5-day intervals. The bilateral lateral septa

The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of different housing management systems on behavior, blood metabolites and hormonal balance in male dromedaries during the rutting season. Forty-eight adult male dromedaries were stratified in a two by three factorial experiment design, testing effects of social contact (single and group) and movement control (tied, fenced and exercise). During a ten-week experimental period, male dromedaries were filmed weekly for 20 min three times per day to evaluate their behaviors. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for serum metabolites and hormones.

Methamphetamine (MA) abuse has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Users of MA report dramatic increases in sexual drive that have been associated with increased engagement in risky sexual behavior leading to higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies. The ability of MA to enhance sexual drive in females is enigmatic since related psychostimulants like amphetamine and cocaine appear not to affect sexual drive in women, and in rodents models, amphetamine has been reported to be inhibitory to female sexual behavior. Examination of MA's effects on femal

Though sex differences in animal behavior are ubiquitous, their neural and genetic underpinnings remain poorly understood. In particular, the role of functional differences in the neural circuitry that is shared by both sexes has not been extensively investigated. We have addressed these issues with C. elegans olfaction, a simple innate behavior mediated by sexually isomorphic neurons. Though males respond to the same olfactory attractants as do hermaphrodites, we find that each sex has a characteristic repertoire of olfactory preferences. These are not secondary to other sex-specific behavior

Despite great progress in the neurosciences, our understanding of the determinants of sexual orientation is incomplete. The authors review for the clinician/neuropsychiatrist studies pertaining to the formation of sexual orientation in the following areas: hormone effects on sexual behavior (animal and human); the complicated relationship between gender identity, gender role, and sexual orientation in humans; cross-cultural studies of homosexuality; behavioral observations in pseudohermaphrodites and offspring of mothers treated with hormones during pregnancy; brain studies of homosexual and h

It is developmentally normal for children to display some sexual behaviors but concerning sexual behaviors (CSBs) that deviate from societal norms are potentially harmful. The development of CSBs is influenced by various factors, including family dynamics, parental stressors, and disruptions in psychosexual development. Historically, sexual abuse was seen as the primary cause of CSBs, but current research suggests that nonsexual abuse and family environment also play significant roles. This scoping review synthesized literature on the psychological characteristics of children and youth who eng

Generally, intra- and inter-sexual interactions have been considered qualitatively different processes. However, same-sex sexual behavior is widespread in the animal kingdom, challenging this assumption. Recently, a hypothesis was proposed that regards territorial contests of butterflies, where two males chase each other without apparent physical attack, as an initial phase of mating behavior. Building on this idea, we reviewed research on sexual and species recognition in butterflies to assess the extent to which they recognize the same sex and species. We found no evidence that butterflies r
