Gender identity and sexual orientation in women with borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, text revision (DSM-IV-TR) (and earlier editions), a disturbance in "identity" is one of the defining features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Gender identity, a person's sense of self as a male or a female, constitutes an important aspect of identity formation, but this construct has rarely been examined in patients with BPD. AIMS: In the present study, the presence of gender identity disorder or confusion was examined in women diagnosed with BPD. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We used a validated d

Sexual orientation and gender as factors in socioculturally acquired vulnerability to body dissatisfaction and eating disorders.

This study investigated the hypothesis that gay men and heterosexual women are dissatisfied with their bodies and vulnerable to eating disorders because of a shared emphasis on physical attractiveness and thinness that is based on a desire to attract and please men. Although men place priority on physical attractiveness in evaluating potential partners, women place greater emphasis on other factors, such as personality, status, power, and income. Therefore, lesbians and heterosexual men are less concerned with their own physical attractiveness and, consequently, less dissatisfied with their bo

Gender differences in the association between conduct disorder and risky sexual behavior.

Despite suggestions that there are gender differences in the association between conduct disorder (CD) and risky sexual behavior, limited empirical research has examined this question. Youth (N = 616) were recruited from four primary care clinics and completed questions related to risky sexual behavior, alcohol and marijuana use, and CD. Results of stratified multivariate models indicated that the association between CD and having four or more lifetime partners, having two or more partners in the last 3 months, and engaging in condomless sex was stronger among female youth. However, the associ

Disordered eating in sexual and gender minority adults: the roles of gender variance, appearance anxiety, and internalized ideals.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals face elevated risks for disordered eating and body image disturbances, shaped by minority stress, internalized beauty norms, and gendered societal expectations. This study examined (1) whether SGM individuals in Romania report higher levels of disordered eating than cisgender heterosexuals, and (2) whether appearance-related anxiety and internalized beauty ideals mediate the relationship between gender identity/expression and disordered eating within the SGM group. METHODS: A total of 270 Romanian adults (aged 18+), including 225 iden

Post-traumatic stress disorders among sexual and gender-based violence survivors in war-affected zones in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in war-affected zones is a pressing public health issue, as these individuals often endure compounded trauma from both the violence they experience and the broader context of conflict. Post-traumatic stress disorders are overlooked in Ethiopian society, despite the country having the greatest number of victims of violence and its detrimental effects on mental health. This study aimed to explore Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Survivors attending one

Borderline Personality Disorder Symptoms in a Community Sample of Sexually and Gender Diverse Adults.

The current study aimed to identify borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptom disparities in sexually and/or gender diverse adults, determine if BPD symptoms vary across sexual orientation and gender identity, and identify factors related to BPD symptoms in this population. A sample of 218 sexually and gender diverse adults completed measures for BPD symptoms and trauma/stressors. Results suggest that sexually and/or gender diverse adults scored higher on six of the nine diagnostic criteria for BPD and were likely to have a probable BPD diagnosis, although these disparities were not observ

Descriptive Study of Gender Dysphoria and Sexual Behavior in a Disorder of Sex Development Group.

Disorder of Sex Development (DSD) refers to a heterogeneous group of congenital conditions in which chromosomal, gonadal, and anatomical sex are atypical. Typically, the diagnosis is made at birth or infancy and interventional actions are necessary in many cases. The repercussions in adult life, more specifically in the field of sexuality, have not been not widely studied yet. This study shows research data that seek to identify in a group of individuals with DSD (XX DSD, XY DSD, Chromosomal DSD), who are being monitored in the departments of pediatric surgery and urology of a hospital in the

Prevalence of Disordered Eating Behaviors Among Sexual and Gender Minority Youth Varies at the Intersection of Gender Identity and Race/Ethnicity.

OBJECTIVE: Prior work has documented inequities in disordered eating behavior (DEB) prevalence across gender identity, race, and ethnicity, yet has often ignored the fact that individuals belong to multiple social groups simultaneously. The present study assessed DEB inequities at the intersection of gender identity and race/ethnicity. METHOD: The sample included n = 10,287 adolescents (68% gender-diverse, 33% belonging to marginalized racial/ethnic groups). Past-year prevalence of dietary restriction, self-induced vomiting, diet pill use, and binge eating was assessed. Data were analyzed wit

Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Romantic Relationships in Adolescents and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This study compared sexual orientation and romantic relationship experience in a large sample of adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (n = 675) and general population peers (n = 8064). Gender identity was explored in the ASD group in relation to assigned gender at birth. Compared to general population peers, more people with ASD, especially women, reported sexual attraction to both same- and opposite-sex partners. About half of the participants with ASD was in a relationship (heterosexual in most cases) and most of them lived with their partner. A notable number of autist

The impact of client sexual orientation and gender on clinical judgments and diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.

Concerns have been raised that individuals who are having difficulty coming out as gay or bisexual may be misdiagnosed with borderline personality disorder. In this analogue study, 141 psychologists evaluated a hypothetical client with problems that resembled borderline symptoms but were also consistent with a sexual identity crisis. Client descriptions varied by sexual orientation and gender. Results revealed an effect of sexual orientation for male clients, but not female clients. Male clients whom therapists perceived likely to be gay or bisexual, and male clients with partners of unspecifi

Disparities in healthcare access among sexual and gender minority individuals with generalized anxiety disorder in the US.

PURPOSE: We aimed to quantify and compare the prevalence of healthcare access barriers among individuals diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), focusing on differences between sexual and gender minority (SGM) and non-SGM adults. We also examined whether intersecting identities further compounded these barriers to inform equitable healthcare policy. METHODS: We analyzed data (2017-2022) from the All of Us Program, a nationwide database of self-reported surveys, electronic health records, and demographic information. Our sample included 8,841 adults diagnosed with GAD. Participants
