A Retrospective Analysis of Seven Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Diseases in the City of Bari: Observations and Future Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) have become a global health problem, causing severe diseases and, in some cases, death. This study aimed to highlight the prevalence and spread of STIs in the Apulian population in the urban area of Bari. This would provide a clearer picture of the onset, persistence, social status, and pathophysiology of STIs, and allow health authorities to identify high-risk groups and personalize prevention and treatment programs. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of a study conducted between May 21, 2018, and May 31, 2024, on 6,931 patients. En

The influence of the vaginal ecosystem on vaginitis, bacterial vaginosis, and sexually transmitted diseases: an epidemiological study and literature review.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to demonstrate the correlation between altered balance of the vaginal ecosystem and increased risk of vaginitis, bacterial vaginosis, and sexually transmitted diseases and the association between specific alterations found in fresh bacterioscopic examinations (FBE) and the risk of certain infections. METHODS: A retrospective, monocentric study was conducted from January 2013 to December 2023. Patients who underwent FBE and vaginal swabs following reported symptoms or suspected syndromic pictures of vulvovaginal infections were included. RESULTS: Two thousand one hun

Decreased Susceptibility to Azithromycin in Clinical Shigella Isolates Associated with HIV and Sexually Transmitted Bacterial Diseases, Minnesota, USA, 2012-2015.

Shigellosis outbreaks caused by Shigella with decreased susceptibility to azithromycin (DSA-Shigella) among men who have sex with men (MSM) have been reported worldwide. We describe sexual health indicators and antimicrobial drug resistance for shigellosis cases in Minnesota, USA. We analyzed a sample of isolates received during 2012-2015 and cross-referenced cases with the Minnesota Department of Health Sexually Transmitted Disease Database to ascertain patients' HIV status and recent chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis infections. Of 691 Shigella isolates, 46 (7%) were DSA-Shigella; 91% of DS

Potential Applications of Microparticulate-Based Bacterial Outer Membrane Vesicles (OMVs) Vaccine Platform for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs): Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Syphilis.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a major global health issue. Approximately 250 million new cases of STDs occur each year globally. Currently, only three STDs (human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis A, and hepatitis B) are preventable by vaccines. Vaccines for other STDs, including gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, await successful development. Currently, all of these STDs are treated with antibiotics. However, the efficacy of antibiotics is facing growing challenge due to the emergence of bacterial resistance. Therefore, alternative therapeutic approaches, including the development o

Probiotics in Women's Health: Mechanisms, Benefits, and Potential Applications for Preventing Bacterial Vaginosis and Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Sexual Health Products.

This review summarizes key clinical findings on probiotics in addressing bacterial vaginosis (BV) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in women. Lactobacillus bacteria play a critical role in maintaining a balanced vaginal microbiome by supporting an acidic environment and helping combat conditions like BV, AIDS, maternal group B Streptococcus (GBS), and candidiasis. Probiotics, either alone or combined with antibiotics, have shown promise in promoting microbiome recovery and potentially reducing recovery time. However, their efficacy depends on the strains used and specific conditions, em

Resurgent bacterial sexually transmitted disease among men who have sex with men--King County, Washington, 1997-1999.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, King County, Washington (1998 population: 1.6 million), experienced a substantial epidemic of infectious syphilis (i.e., primary, secondary, and early latent). Subsequently, reported cases of infectious syphilis declined to six cases in 1995 and one in 1996; five of the 1995 cases and the case in 1996 were believed to have been acquired outside King County. However, in 1997, sustained spread of syphilis was reestablished in King County. To determine whether this reemergence was associated with changes in the epidemiology of other sexually transmitted dise

Bacterial vaginosis, gonorrhea, and chlamydial infection among women attending a sexually transmitted disease clinic: a longitudinal analysis of possible causal links.

PURPOSE: Interactions between bacterial vaginosis (BV) and inflammatory sexually transmitted infections, such as gonorrhea and chlamydial infection, are not well understood. Furthermore, evidence regarding the sexual transmission of BV is equivocal. METHODS: We assessed associations between incident BV and incidences of gonorrhea and/or chlamydial infection ("gonorrhea/chlamydia"), as well as similarities in associations for the two processes, among 645 female patients at a sexually transmitted disease clinic in Alabama followed prospectively for 6 months from 1995 to 1998. We identified pred

Diagnosis and Management of Bacterial Vaginosis: Summary of Evidence Reviewed for the 2021 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Sexually Transmitted Infections Treatment Guidelines.

In preparation for the 2021 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sexually transmitted infections (STIs) treatment guidelines, the CDC convened an advisory group in 2019 to examine recent literature addressing updates in the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of STIs. This article summarizes recent data in each of these key topic areas as they pertain to bacterial vaginosis (BV), the most common cause of vaginal discharge. The evidence reviewed primarily focused on updates in the global epidemiology of BV, risk factors for BV, data supportive of sexual transmission of BV-associ

Prevalence of bacterial vaginosis and its association with genital infections, inflammation, and contraceptive methods in women attending sexually transmitted disease and primary health clinics.

In an epidemiological survey of 2128 women attending a sexually transmitted diseases clinic for the first time and 200 attending two primary health clinics, 26% and 27% respectively were found to have bacterial vaginosis. The prevalence increased significantly with age, being diagnosed in 22.8% (326/1431) of women aged 14-24 years, and in 33.3% (232/697) of those aged greater than or equal to 25 years. Bacterial vaginosis was associated with gonorrhoea and with chlamydial infection, but was negatively associated with genital papillomavirus infection and yeast infection. Women using barrier con

Commentary: the quest for women's prophylactic methods--hopes vs science.

The companion article by Rosenberg and Gollub in this issue summarizes data from 10 observational studies and concludes that female-controlled contraceptive methods, under typical conditions, are comparable to condoms in preventing sexually transmitted diseases and should be merchandized as such. While we agree that chemical and mechanical contraceptives provide protection against some sexually transmitted diseases, we think the authors have overstated the scientific case for these methods, especially in comparison with the condom. We think the current data remain inconclusive regarding the ab

Sexually transmitted diseases in pregnancy: diagnosis, impact, and intervention.

Sexually transmitted diseases are a major health problem for the 1990s. The etiology of gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, trichomonas, and bacterial vaginitis are presented, along with their treatment, pregnancy-related factors, intrapartum and neonatal factors, and follow-up. The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases has increased, and health care professionals must teach not only about disease impact but also about lifestyle and behavioral changes.

Rapid diagnostic methods in sexually transmitted infections.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common infections throughout the developed and the developing world. It is estimated that worldwide there are 1 million new cases per day of curable bacterial STIs. As part of the World Health Organization 2001 Sexually Transmitted Diseases Diagnostics Initiative, the organization explored the need for simple, affordable, point-of-care STI testing for curable bacterial STIs. This article reviews the evidence supporting the implementation of currently available rapid tests for five common STIs: syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, and herpes.

Sexually transmitted diseases in the age of AIDS.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are common illnesses in the world. There is at least one new sexually transmitted disease consultation for every 100 persons a year in industrialised countries. Today the World Health Organisation estimates that there are 250 million new cases of STD every year world-wide, and over 20 distinct pathogens are currently recognised. While the overall incidence of STD have remained high in industrialised countries, the rates of increase of many bacterial STD such as syphilis and gonorrhoea were beginning to stabilise; but currently there is again a trend for thes
