Bypassing shame and conversion disorder.

We report a case of conversion disorder (partial aphonia) that was successfully treated with speech therapy. During the one year duration of this illness, the patient regained transiently (minutes) her normal speech on a few occasions, independently of concomitant pharmacological interventions. One year after recovery she developed aphonia for the second time, which responded again to speech therapy, although the response rate was slower. Several mechanisms of conversion disorder are reviewed as specifically applied to this case. The possible role of pertinent shame mechanisms in the conversio

Shame, pride and eating disorders.

This paper explores shame and shame-based responses in eating disorders. Research linking shame with eating disorders and the possible role of shame and pride in the onset and maintenance of eating disorders is reviewed. The experience of shame is likely to be complex, dynamic and variable. However, the key to identifying shame is often via the various coping strategies adopted, which in turn may form part of a maintenance cycle for eating disorder beliefs and behaviours. An outline model of shame and pride cycles in the maintenance of eating disorders is presented with clinical implications.

[Depersonalization, social phobia and shame].

Associations between depersonalization (DP) and social phobia (SP) were described in the early scientific literature. This connection, however, has not yet been considered in the recent empirical literature and clinical trials on SP. The aim of this study is to examine these associations. In a sample of 100 consecutive inpatients we compare 45 patients with pathological DP to 55 patients without pathological DP with respect to comorbidity and the degree of social anxieties assessed with the SOCIAL INTERACTION ANXIETY SCALE (SIAS) and with the SOCIAL PHOBIA SCALE (SPS) and the extent of shame a

Shame and severity of bulimic symptoms.

Initial research suggests that self-conscious affect such as shame may perpetuate bulimic symptoms among individuals suffering from bulimia nervosa (BN). This investigation reports findings from two studies that examine the relation of shame to bulimic symptoms. In the first study, the relation of shame to bulimic symptoms was examined among 137 female college undergraduates. Shame accounted for a significant portion of variance in bulimic symptoms after controlling for age, weight status, guilt, and depressed mood. A second study examined the severity of shame in 30 bulimic patients compared

[Shame of having a disabled child].

This work is devoted to the problem of shame linked to disability in children. It has been inspired by patients - disabled infants and their parents. The shame evidently experienced during meetings with parents learning about their child's condition leads to many difficult questions. Shame is not a simple, isolated emotion. It is a complicated feeling, closely connected to various shame-related emotions and experiences. Shame leads to a sense of guilt and self-blame. Shame linked to a child's disability is a shame of 'lacking' and low self-esteem. Additionally it is feeling of nakedness, vulne

[The intensity of shame in mental disorders].

BACKGROUND: Shame is a self-conscious emotion and mostly experienced in the context of moral and/or normative transgression. Feelings of shame about one's own body and its intimacy must be seen as different from those, which are experienced as a result of negative social evaluations. Feelings of shame have been discussed as being important in the emotional experience of mentally ill persons, although systematic research is missing. METHODS: A scenario-based self-report questionnaire has been constructed, the "Heidelberger Fragebogen zu Schamgefühlen". It consists of two scales, one measuring

Shame: An Emotion Needing Exceptional Interventions.

Shame can inflict deep and lasting psychological harm. However, its pervasive negative effects often go unrecognized by both patients and their providers, and thus, it may remain wholly unaddressed. Shame may be mistaken for guilt, embarrassment, or humiliation, but shame darkens patients' quality of life much more profoundly than these other emotions. For this reason, there is a greater need for providers to remain alert to cues that patients may feel shame and if they suspect this and are right, they may seek to help patients reduce their shame. This article discusses what shame is, how to d

Multidimensional Dissociation, Shame, Trauma and Ethnicity.

Dissociation can be regarded as a normal and complex set of mental phenomena that may operate within multiple conditions. This Institutional Review Board approved study examined a group of pre-professional/professional performing artists and college athletes (N = 687) and explored ethnic group differences in multidimensional symptoms of dissociation and shame, as well as cumulative trauma exposure, within four major ethnic groups: Black (14%), Asian (21%), White (43%), and Latinx (22%). The measures included a brief health and demographic screener, the Multiscale Dissociation Inventory, the In

Shame Coping Strategies Amplify Certain Psychopathologies.

INTRODUCTION: Recent research has focused on the relationship between shame and psychopathology. It has been shown that shame predicts depressive and anxious symptoms, as well as substance abuse, non-suicidal self-injury, and aggression. However, it remains unclear, how one emotion can influence psychiatric symptoms of such a broad spectrum. It is assumed that as shame is such an intense and painful emotion, it needs to be coped with and that the coping-strategies influence the effect shame has on psychopathologies. The Compass of Shame Scale (CoSS) is a questionnaire measuring 4 shame coping-

Nice snake, shame about the legs.

Snakes are one of the most extraordinary groups of terrestrial vertebrates, with numerous specializations distinguishing them from other squamates (lizards and their allies). Their musculoskeletal system allows creeping, burrowing, swimming and even gliding, and their predatory habits are aided by chemo- and thermoreceptors, an extraordinary degree of cranial kinesis and, sometimes, powerful venoms. Recent discoveries of indisputable early fossil snakes with posterior legs are generating intense debate about the evolutionary origin of these reptiles. New cladistic analyses dispute the precise

Bringing Shame Out of the Shadows: Identifying Shame in Child Sexual Abuse Disclosure Processes and Implications for Psychotherapy.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) has been described as a highly stigmatizing experience. Despite the recognition of shame as a significant contributor to psychological distress following CSA, an inhibitor of CSA disclosure, and a challenging emotion to overcome in therapy, limited research has explored the experience of shame with young people who have been sexually abused. This study is unique in examining the transcripts of 47 young people aged 15-25 years from a large-scale study conducted in Ireland and Canada and exploring manifestations of shame in CSA disclosure narratives. Using a thematic ana

Shame in women with a history of eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have investigated shame in eating disorders but most have used non-clinical samples examined only one type of eating disorder or included only a limited range of shame measures. The current study explored shame from multiple perspectives in women who report a range of eating disorder diagnoses and who are at different stages of illness and recovery. METHOD: In a postal questionnaire study, 224 women with a history of an eating disorder completed measures of anorexic and bulimic symptoms, depression and shame. RESULTS: After controlling for levels of depression, sha

The oedipal organization of shame. The analysis of a phobia.

The affect of shame in its development and transformations plays an important role in the oedipal period, alongside guilt, as a source of unpleasure and a signal affect. Earlier experiences of shame, associated with loss of control, are now incorporated into the new meanings derived from oedipal conflicts. The analysis of a phobic woman shows how the shame of exposure, experienced by the patient in terms of body concerns, involved complex compromises representing impulses, defenses, and fantasies. Signals of shame anxiety helped to ward off guilty fantasies of love and hostility by motivating

Sexual Violence and Shame: A Meta-Analysis.

Although sexual violence (SV) has been hypothesized to increase shame, the relationship between SV and shame has not been quantified. Addressing this gap is essential for developing targeted interventions for survivors, as shame is a transdiagnostic risk factor for numerous forms of psychopathology and a barrier to service-seeking. This meta-analysis first examines whether individuals exposed to SV demonstrate higher shame than individuals who reported no SV exposure. Second, we assessed the strength of the associations between SV severity and shame severity. Seven databases were searched for

The Transitivity of Shame: Richard Selzer's "Imelda".

In the world of medicine, shame's potential is ever-present and attempts to keep it at bay may only induce it all the more intensely. In this short story by the often-anthologized physician-writer Richard Selzer, the narrator witnesses a surgery to repair a young girl's cleft palate that leads to her untimely death. Later, the narrator realizes that the surgeon performed reconstructive surgery on the girl's corpse. Arguably, the surgeon has attempted not only to repair the girl's face, but to preserve his own social face from shame as well. And while the narrator may want to absolve the surgeo

Shame in Anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Studies on the relations between shame and anxiety and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) are reviewed, with a focus on recent work. RECENT FINDINGS: Medium-sized positive correlations have been consistently found across anxiety disorders and OCRDs, suggesting that this relation is transdiagnostic. Most studies focused on shame-proneness and found similar relations across multiple types (e.g. internal, external) and domains (e.g. bodily, characterological, behavioural) of shame, with little variation between clinical and non-clinical populations and differen
