What Is in Your Shark Fin Soup? Probably an Endangered Shark Species and a Bit of Mercury.

Shark fin soup, consumed by Asian communities throughout the world, is one of the principal drivers of the demand of shark fins. This near USD 1 billion global industry has contributed to a shark population declines of up to 70%. In an effort to arrest these declines, the trade in several species of sharks is regulated under the auspices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Despite this legal framework, the dried fins of trade-regulated sharks are frequently sold in markets and consumed in shark fin soup. Shark fins found in soups brea

Anatomy and evolution of heterocercal tail in lamniform sharks.

Lamniformes is a small shark group consisting of 15 extant species with remarkably diverse lifestyles and a wide range in heterocercal tail morphology. The caudal fin morphology must be related to their lifestyle because the tail is a main locomotive structure in sharks, but such relationships have remained largely uninvestigated. Here, the morphology-lifestyle relationship in lamniforms is examined through phylogenetic mapping. This study suggests that, within Lamniformes, caudal fins with a more horizontally directed curvature of the vertebral column are plesiomorphic, whereas those with a l

A "Shark Encounter": Delayed Primary Closure and Prophylactic Antibiotic Treatment of a Great White Shark Bite.

BACKGROUND: Shark bites are rare but sensational injuries that are covered in the lay press but are not well described in the medical literature. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 50-year-old man who sustained two deep puncture wounds to his thigh from a great white shark in the waters surrounding Isla de Guadalupe off the coast of Baja California, Mexico, during a caged SCUBA dive. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS?: We discuss our strategy of closing the wounds in a delayed primary fashion 24 hours after injury, our antibiotic choices, and the patient's course and revie

Dental crown morphological variation and heterodonty in carcharhiniform sharks.

Elasmobranch teeth are highly mineralized structures that constitute the majority of the fossil record for this group. Despite their taxonomic and evolutionary significance, detailed descriptions of dental morphology remain scarce. The order Carcharhiniformes, the most diverse among sharks, comprises 304 valid species that display remarkable diversity and complexity in dentition. This study aims to describe and illustrate crown morphological variation within Carcharhiniformes, with a focus on family-level patterns and types of heterodonty. Tooth samples were obtained from specimens preserved i

Neogene sharks and rays from the Brazilian 'Blue Amazon'.

The lower Miocene Pirabas Formation in the North of Brazil was deposited under influence of the proto-Amazon River and is characterized by large changes in the ecological niches from the early Miocene onwards. To evaluate these ecological changes, the elasmobranch fauna of the fully marine, carbonate-rich beds was investigated. A diverse fauna with 24 taxa of sharks and rays was identified with the dominant groups being carcharhiniforms and myliobatiforms. This faunal composition is similar to other early Miocene assemblages from the proto-Carribbean bioprovince. However, the Pirabas Formation

White shark comparison reveals a slender body for the extinct megatooth shark, Otodus megalodon (Lamniformes: Otodontidae).

The megatooth shark, †Otodus megalodon, which likely reached at least 15 m in total length, is an iconic extinct shark represented primarily by its gigantic teeth in the Neogene fossil record. As one of the largest marine carnivores to ever exist, understanding the biology, evolution, and extinction of †O. megalodon is important because it had a significant impact on the ecology and evolution of marine ecosystems that shaped the present-day oceans. Some attempts inferring the body form of †O. megalodon have been carried out, but they are all speculative due to the lack of any complete skeleton

Optimal swimming strategies and behavioral plasticity of oceanic whitetip sharks.

Animal behavior should optimize the difference between the energy they gain from prey and the energy they spend searching for prey. This is all the more critical for predators occupying the pelagic environment, as prey is sparse and patchily distributed. We theoretically derive two canonical swimming strategies for pelagic predators, that maximize their energy surplus while foraging. They predict that while searching, a pelagic predator should maintain small dive angles, swim at speeds near those that minimize the cost of transport, and maintain constant speed throughout the dive. Using biolog

Turning maneuvers in sharks: Predicting body curvature from axial morphology.

Given the diversity of vertebral morphologies among fishes, it is tempting to propose causal links between axial morphology and body curvature. We propose that shape and size of the vertebrae, intervertebral joints, and the body will more accurately predict differences in body curvature during swimming rather than a single meristic such as total vertebral number alone. We examined the correlation between morphological features and maximum body curvature seen during routine turns in five species of shark: Triakis semifasciata, Heterodontus francisci, Chiloscyllium plagiosum, Chiloscyllium punct

Successful delivery of viviparous lantern shark from an artificial uterus and the self-production of lantern shark luciferin.

Our recent success in the long-term maintenance of lantern shark embryos in artificial uterine systems has provided a novel option for the medical treatment of premature embryos for captive viviparous elasmobranchs. The remaining issue with this system is that the embryos cannot survive the abrupt change in the chemical environment from artificial uterine fluid (AUF) to seawater during delivery. To overcome this issue, the present study developed a new protocol for seawater adaptation, which is characterized by a long-term and stepwise shift from AUF to seawater prior to delivery. This protoco

Comparative morphology of the skeletal labyrinth in extant squalomorph sharks.

The inner ear of vertebrates serves dual roles, detecting sound as well as maintaining equilibrium. The increased accessibility of Computed Tomography (CT) provides an opportunity to assess the morphology of the skeletal labyrinth, which houses the membranous labyrinth of the ear, in one of the two primary clades of elasmobranchs: Squalomorphi. This study describes the morphology of the skeletal labyrinth of 10 species of squalomorphs: Chlamydoselachus anguineus, Heptranchias perlo, Hexanchus griseus, Notorynchus cepedianus, Squatina californica, Centrophorus squamosus, Squaliolus laticaudus,

Fluid dynamics of feeding behaviour in white-spotted bamboo sharks.

Although the motor control of feeding is presumed to be generally conserved, some fishes are capable of modulating the feeding behaviour in response to prey type and or prey size. This led to the 'feeding modulation hypothesis', which states that rapid suction strikes are pre-programmed stereotyped events that proceed to completion once initiated regardless of sensory input. If this hypothesis holds true, successful strikes should be indistinguishable from unsuccessful strikes owing to a lack of feedback control in specialized suction feeding fishes. The hydrodynamics of suction feeding in whi

The brain of the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus).

The brain of a basking shark is described for the first time. Allometrical analysis of brain-body weight relationships indicates that Cetorhinus maximus shows by far the lowest degree of cerebralization of any shark investigated to date, possibly reflecting its plankton-feeding mode of life. Furthermore, some external morphological features of the brain appear to be species-specific. The proportions of brain parts indicate a primitive vertebrate brain organization. The size of the telencephalon, 34% of the total brain, equals that in some other sharks, whereas the cerebellum, 30% of the total

Bacterial abscesses in whitespotted bamboo sharks (Chiloscyllium plagiosum) in managed care.

Sixteen whitespotted bamboo sharks (Chiloscyllium plagiosum) with histologically similar bacterial abscesses were submitted to Northwest ZooPath from nine zoo and aquarium institutions over a 17-year period. These abscesses were characterized by inflammatory cell infiltrates and necrosis with intralesional small, Gram-positive, acid-fast negative, cocci bacteria. The clinical presentation, histologic findings, and culture results indicate that Enterococcus faecalis is a relatively common cause of these lesions in whitespotted bamboo sharks. This organism also provides a treatment challenge due

DEXMEDETOMIDINE AND MIDAZOLAM INTRAMUSCULAR SEDATION IN BROWNBANDED BAMBOO SHARKS (CHILOSCYLLIUM PUNCTATUM).

Bamboo sharks are some of the most common elasmobranch species in zoos and aquaria and are frequently sedated for medical exams, treatments, and research. This study investigated the use of an IM sedation protocol of a single dose of dexmedetomidine (0.05 mg/kg) and midazolam (2.0 mg/kg) in brownbanded bamboo sharks (Chiloscyllium punctatum). Sharks were serially monitored every 5 min for heart rate, branchial beats, righting reflex, coelomic response, cloacal response, pelvic fin reflex, response to noxious stimulus, voluntary movement, and ability to swim. This sedation dose was effective at

From Sharks to Yeasts: Squalene in the Development of Vaccine Adjuvants.

Squalene is a natural linear triterpene that can be found in high amounts in certain fish liver oils, especially from deep-sea sharks, and to a lesser extent in a wide variety of vegeTable oils. It is currently used for numerous vaccine and drug delivery emulsions due to its stability-enhancing properties and biocompatibility. Squalene-based vaccine adjuvants, such as MF59 (Novartis), AS03 (GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals), or AF03 (Sanofi) are included in seasonal vaccines against influenza viruses and are presently being considered for inclusion in several vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 and future
