Lentiviral diseases of sheep and goats: chronic pneumonia leukoencephalomyelitis and arthritis.

This review describes the pathogenesis of a slowly progressive disease complex caused by naturally occurring nononcogenic retroviruses in sheep and goats. In nature, infections are usually clinically silent, but disease may manifest itself after prolonged incubation periods. Clinically, this is seen as dyspnea, progressive paralysis, and/or progressive arthritis. In all organs the basic lesion is inflammatory with infiltration and proliferation of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and macrophages. Other organ-specific pathologic changes such as primary demyelination in the central nervous system and

Laryngeal chondritis as a differential for upper airway diseases in German sheep.

BACKGROUND: Ovine laryngeal chondritis is a rare entity of sheep in the USA, Great Britain, New Zealand and Iceland, but has not been reported in Germany so far. Here, two German cases are reported. CASE PRESENTATION: Two rams showed severe and progressive signs of dyspnea. Endoscopically, a severe bilateral swelling of the larynx was identified in both rams. Due to poor prognosis and progression of clinical signs one ram was euthanized, while the other ram died overnight. In both cases, a necrosuppurative laryngitis and chondritis of arytenoid cartilages was found at necropsy. Fusobacterium

Oxygen pre-breathing decreases dysbaric diseases in UW sheep undergoing hyperbaric exposure.

Prolonged exposure of humans and animals to increased pressure as in a disabled submarine (DISSUB) can saturate the body's tissues with dissolved N2 as compressed air is breathed. Decompression-induced bubble formation in the long bone marrow cavity may lead to a bone compartment syndrome resulting in bone ischemia and necrosis. We tested oxygen pre-breathing prior to decompression in sheep to assess the effect upon dysbaric osteonecrosis (DON) induction in a DISSUB simulation experiment. A total of sixteen adult female sheep were used throughout the experiment. Four sheep were used as control

Status of the tick-borne diseases in sheep and goats in Turkey.

A serological survey using Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT) for Babesia ovis infection of sheep has been carried out in different geographical regions of Turkey. The results indicated that 71.6% of 141 sheep in Black Sea region, 70.9% of 93 sheep in central Anatolia, 80.2% of 96 sheep in Aegean region and 55.7% of 122 sheep in eastern Anatolia were seropositive. This means that B. ovis infection is endemic throughout Turkey. In addition, occurrence of B. ovis, B. motasi, Theileria hirci, T. recondita and Anaplasma ovis infections in sheep and goats has been reported previously in Turk

General review of tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats world-wide.

A general review of the tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats is given, with the emphasis on those thought to be of greatest economic importance. These include babesiosis, theileriosis, cowdriosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, Nairobi sheep diseases and tick paralysis. A commented list of tick-borne diseases and their vectors is presented. It is stressed that large gaps remain in our knowledge of the real importance in the field of many of these diseases, especially in local stock.

Tay-Sachs disease in Jacob sheep.

Autopsy studies of four Jacob sheep dying within their first 6-8 months of a progressive neurodegenerative disorder suggested the presence of a neuronal storage disease. Lysosomal enzyme studies of brain and liver from an affected animal revealed diminished activity of hexosaminidase A (Hex A) measured with an artificial substrate specific for this component of β-hexosaminidase. Absence of Hex A activity was confirmed by cellulose acetate electrophoresis. Brain lipid analyses demonstrated the presence of increased concentrations of G(M2)-ganglioside and asialo-G(M2)-ganglioside. The hexa cDNA

Hemorrhagic disease in bighorn sheep in Arizona.

Two bighorn sheep from Arizona (USA) were submitted for necropsy. One was a Rocky Mountain bighorn (Ovis canadensis canadensis) and the other was a desert bighorn (Ovis canadensis mexicana). Both had lesions consistent with those of hemorrhagic disease (HD). Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) type-2 and bluetongue virus (BTV) type-17, respectively, were isolated from the sheep tissues. To our knowledge, HD caused by either EHDV or BTV infection has not been documented previously in Arizona bighorn sheep.

Seroprevalence of zoonotic abortive diseases and their associated risk factors in Tunisian sheep.

BACKGROUND: Abortion is a serious problem for sheep flocks and it is responsible for considerable economic losses. The epidemiological situation of abortion causing agents in sheep is poorly documented in Tunisia. This study aims to investigate the status of three abortion causing agents (Brucella spp, Toxoplasma gondii, and Coxiella burnetii) among organized flocks in Tunisia. RESULTS: A total of 793 sample blood collected from twenty-six flocks in seven governorates in Tunisia, were tested by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (i-ELISA) for antibodies against three abortion causing

Survey of desert bighorn sheep in California for exposure to selected infectious diseases.

From February 1983 to June 1985, 188 desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni, = 161 and Oc cremnobates, = 27) from 18 herds in 17 mountain ranges and one captive herd were caught, marked, and had blood, fecal, and nasal mucus samples collected. Nasal swab specimens were cultured bacteriologically and virologically specifically for parainfluenza-3 (PI-3) virus. Bacterial flora differed from herd to herd. Pathogenic pneumophilic bacteria (eg, Pasteurella sp) seldom were found. Parainfluenza-3 virus was isolated from 6 bighorn sheep in 3 herds. Fecal specimens were examined for parasite ova

[Swiss scrapie surveillance. I. Clinical aspects of neurological diseases in sheep and goats].

Small ruminants infected with scrapie show a large range of often unspecific clinical symptoms. The most-often described signs, locomotion, sensibility and behavioural disorders and emaciation, rarely occur together, and cases have been described in which only one of those signs was detectable. Thus, formulating a well-circumscribed definition of a clinical suspect case is difficult. Most animals with CNS-effecting diseases such as listeriosis, polioencephalomacia, cerebrospinal nematidiasis and enterotoxemia will, in a thorough neurological examination, show at least some scrapie-like symptoms

Tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats and their related vectors in Iran.

Haemoparasitic diseases have long been considered as a major problem to efficient sheep and goats production in Iran. Theileriosis due to Theileria hirci and babesiosis due to Babesia ovis and B. motasi are the most pathogenic protozoa. B. crassa, Anaplasma ovis and Eperythrozoon ovis are usually non-pathogenic and do not cause any apparent problem. The major tick genera found on sheep and goats are Hyalomma, Rhipicephalus, Haemaphysalis, Ixodes and rarely Dermacentor distributed in all part of Iran. Our studies indicate that only Hyalomma ticks transmit Theileria species but the others transm

Epidemiological, virological, and pathogenic insights into Nairobi sheep disease virus infection in sheep and goats in China.

Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV), a tick-borne pathogen in the Orthonairovirus genus of the Nairoviridae family, causes Nairobi sheep disease (NSD), which has mortality rates over 90% in sheep and goats. Historically, NSD outbreaks in East Africa and South Asia have led to considerable economic losses. Although NSDV genomic fragments have been detected in ticks in China, there has been a notable absence of reported infections in local sheep and goats. In this study, we report the first identification of NSDV infection in sheep and goats in China. Through meta-transcriptomics sequencing, NSDV

Translational neurophysiology in sheep: measuring sleep and neurological dysfunction in CLN5 Batten disease affected sheep.

Creating valid mouse models of slowly progressing human neurological diseases is challenging, not least because the short lifespan of rodents confounds realistic modelling of disease time course. With their large brains and long lives, sheep offer significant advantages for translational studies of human disease. Here we used normal and CLN5 Batten disease affected sheep to demonstrate the use of the species for studying neurological function in a model of human disease. We show that electroencephalography can be used in sheep, and that longitudinal recordings spanning many months are possible

Natural history of Tay-Sachs disease in sheep.

Tay-Sachs disease (TSD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by a deficiency of the enzyme β-N-acetylhexosaminidase A (HexA). TSD naturally occurs in Jacob sheep is the only experimental model of TSD. TSD in sheep recapitulates neurologic features similar to juvenile onset and late onset TSD patients. Due to the paucity of human literature on pathology of TSD, a better natural history in the sheep TSD brain, which is on the same order of magnitude as a child's, is necessary for evaluating therapy and characterizing the pathological events that occur. To provide clinicians and researcher

Evolutionary biology and the risk of scrapie disease in sheep.

Scrapie in sheep occurs in two forms. Classical scrapie, along with chronic wasting disease in deer, differs from all other prion diseases in being contagious and occurring as propagating epidemics. By contrast, atypical scrapie occurs sporadically and like most other prion diseases, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, is regarded as non-contagious under natural conditions. This difference motivates the present study, which uses the perspective of evolutionary biology to explore whether atypical or non-contagious scrapie can transform to classical or contagious scrapie when appropriat
