Exercise-induced anaphylactic reaction to shellfish.

The syndrome of immediate type I food hypersensitivity, mediated by tissue-bound IgE antibody and mast cell histamine release, is well recorded in the medical literature. This case study represents a previously undescribed late food hypersensitivity, induced only by strenuous exercise. Identification of this new syndrome illustrates classical epidemiologic analysis, improves medical advice for the allergic and athletically inclined, and raises new questions in the areas of allergy and immunology.

[Cross reactivity between fish and shellfish].

In Spain, fish allergy represents 18 % of all cases of food allergy in children while reactions caused by crustacea and mollusks account for 3.8 % and 1.6 % respectively. Cross-reactivity is defined as the recognition of distinct antigens by the same IgE antibody, demonstrable by in vivo and in vitro tests, which clinically manifests as reactions caused by antigens homologous to different species. Subclinical sensitization can also occur, giving rise to patients sensitized to particular fish or shellfish but who do not present symptoms on consumption.Cod and shrimp have been the models used to

Foodborne infections vectored by molluscan shellfish.

Foodborne diseases cause approximately 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5000 deaths each year in the United States. The authors present and analyze information derived from epidemiologic investigations and surveillance systems on foodborne infections caused by consumption of molluscan shellfish. This review focuses on the bias in reporting of shellfish-vectored illness, prevention and control of such infections, the origin of recognized viral and bacterial etiologic agents, and a new potential public health threat of a food-and-waterborne protozoan contaminant, Cryptosporidi

Paralytic shellfish poisoning in southern China.

The rapidly expanding mariculture and commercial region along the southern coast of China has experienced sporadic outbreaks of paralytic shellfish poisoning for nearly 30 years, yet virtually nothing is known of the nature of that toxicity or of the causative organisms. This study presents the first direct comparisons of the high performance liquid chromatography toxin composition profiles of shellfish implicated in paralytic shellfish poisoning outbreaks in Daya Bay with Alexandrium tamarense cultures established from those waters. The three cultures that were analyzed produced an unusually

Use of amiodarone in a patient with a shellfish allergy.

A 65-year-old Caucasian male with a shellfish allergy developed atrial fibrillation and hypotension after coronary artery bypass and duodenal ulcer surgery. Following electrical cardioversion, oral amiodarone was continued chronically without an allergic reaction. There is a common misconception that a shellfish allergy correlates to an iodine allergy. There is little documentation of the association between an allergy to shellfish and an allergy to iodine. Food allergies can be subcategorized based on the involvement of IgE. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that shellfish allergi

Microplastics Facilitate Protozoan Pathogen Contamination in Shellfish.

Concerns about microplastic pollution have risen as numerous studies have reported detection of microplastics in foods, including seafood. One emerging concern is the ability of microplastics to vector pathogens that can adhere to biofilms on microplastic surfaces. Here, we investigated whether microplastics can facilitate zoonotic protozoan parasite contamination in shellfish. Oysters were selected for this study because they are commonly eaten raw and can harbor zoonotic protozoan pathogens. Acclimated live oysters were exposed in closed aquaria to Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Toxoplasma (o

OMICs Approaches in Diarrhetic Shellfish Toxins Research.

Diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs) are among the most prevalent marine toxins in Europe's and in other temperate coastal regions. These toxins are produced by several dinoflagellate species; however, the contamination of the marine trophic chain is often attributed to species of the genus Dinophysis. This group of toxins, constituted by okadaic acid (OA) and analogous molecules (dinophysistoxins, DTXs), are highly harmful to humans, causing severe poisoning symptoms caused by the ingestion of contaminated seafood. Knowledge on the mode of action and toxicology of OA and the chemical characteri

Infectious diseases associated with molluscan shellfish consumption.

A history of shellfish-vectored illnesses (i.e., those associated with consumption of clams, oysters, mussels, and scallops) occurring in the past nine decades is presented. Typhoid fever was a significant public health problem among consumers of raw molluscan shellfish earlier in this century. The development of more effective sewage treatment procedures and the institution of a national program following these outbreaks led to a series of measures which eventually eliminated shellfish-associated typhoid fever. Present-day problems associated with this food source still involve some wastewate

Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning Outbreak-Oregon, United States, 2024.

In May 2024, the Oregon Poison Center notified the Oregon Health Authority of multiple people with suspected paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) who had consumed self-harvested mussels. Two days before this report, part of the Oregon Coast was closed to mussel harvesting after detection of paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) above the closure threshold (≥80 µg PST/100 g shellfish tissue) in mussels at one site. Following these illness reports, the closure was expanded northward to the Oregon-Washington border to include harvest areas reported by ill persons. An outbreak investigation was initiate

Modeling Pathogen Dispersal in Marine Fish and Shellfish.

In marine ecosystems, oceanographic processes often govern host contacts with infectious agents. Consequently, many approaches developed to quantify pathogen dispersal in terrestrial ecosystems have limited use in the marine context. Recent applications in marine disease modeling demonstrate that physical oceanographic models coupled with biological models of infectious agents can characterize dispersal networks of pathogens in marine ecosystems. Biophysical modeling has been used over the past two decades to model larval dispersion but has only recently been utilized in marine epidemiology. I

Paralytic shellfish poisoning and palytoxin poisoning in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Fatal cases of exposure to paralytic shellfish toxins and palytoxins have occurred in companion animals but are poorly described. METHODS: We describe one case of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) and three cases of palytoxin poisoning in dogs. RESULTS: Mild PSP occurred following ingestion of crab while walking on a beach. Analysis confirmed the presence of paralytic shellfish toxins, particularly decarbamoyl saxitoxin, in clinical samples and marine organisms. This case occurred shortly after an outbreak of PSP in dogs on the eastern coast of England. Palytoxin poisoning occu

Phycotoxins: chemistry, mechanisms of action and shellfish poisoning.

Phycotoxins are natural metabolites produced by micro-algae. Through accumulation in the food chain, these toxins may concentrate in different marine organisms, including filter-feeding bivalves, burrowing and grazing organisms, herbivorous and predatory fish. Human poisoning due to ingestion of seafood contaminated by phycotoxins has occurred in the past, and harmful algal blooms (HABs) are naturally occurring events. Still, we are witnessing a global increase in HABs and seafood contaminations, whose causative factors are only partially understood. Phycotoxins are small to medium-sized natur

Contamination of Atlantic coast commercial shellfish with Cryptosporidium.

Shellfish (oysters and/or clams) were obtained from 37 commercial harvesting sites in 13 Atlantic coast states from Maine to Florida and one site in New Brunswick, Canada. Gill washings from each of 25 shellfish at each site were examined by immunofluorescence microscopy (IFA) for oocysts of Cryptosporidium. Gill washings from another 25 shellfish at each site were grouped into five pools of five shellfish each. DNA from each pool was utilized for PCR and genotyping. Oocysts were found in 3.7% of 925 oysters and clams examined by IFA in shellfish from New Brunswick and 11 of 13 states. Cryptos

Domoic Acid and Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning - A Review.

A new type of seafood toxicity, called amnesic shellfish poisoning, was described from 107 human cases after individuals consumed mussels containing domoic acid harvested from Prince Edward Island, Canada, in 1987. Most of these cases experienced gastroenteritis, and many older persons or others with underlying chronic illnesses developed neurologic symptoms including memory loss. Standard treatment procedures for the neurologic condition were not effective and three patients died. Domoic acid is a known neurototoxin, and it is believed that in these cases enough toxin was absorbed through the

Shellfish and fish poisoning related to the toxic dinoflagellates.

At least four different species of the toxic dinoflagellates cause shellfish and fish poisoning in the United States: Ptychodiscus brevis, neurotoxic shellfish poisoning; Protogonyaulax catenella and P tamarensis, paralytic shellfish poisoning; and Gambierdiscus toxicus, ciguatera fish poisoning. These three disorders have similar clinical manifestations, primarily neurologic and alimentary. A complete history is essential; confirmation, while dependent on specific laboratory analysis, is usually based on a history of ingestion of fish or shellfish previously associated with these types of poi

Shellfish Allergy: Unmet Needs in Diagnosis and Treatment.

Seafood is a major cause of food allergy and anaphylaxis worldwide. Shellfish is included among the "big eight" food groups, which are responsible for more than 90% of all cases of food allergy. Approximately 2.5% of the world's population has experienced an adverse reaction to seafood. Seafood allergy is one of the most frequent and lethal allergies that exist. The several allergenic proteins involved in allergic reactions that have been described in recent years include tropomyosin, arginine kinase, myosin light chain, and sarcoplasmic calcium-binding protein. Despite all the data reported i

Application of an anti-idiotypic antibody as a mimetic competing antigen in a direct competitive ELISA for the detection of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins in shellfish.

The previously developed direct competitive ELISA to detect PSP toxins (PSP-ELISA) was modified by employing an enzyme-conjugated anti-idiotypic antibody as a competing antigen. The detection limit of the modified PSP-ELISA in shellfish tissue was estimated to be 0.07 MU/g. When the modified PSP-ELISA was evaluated using the 192 toxin-contaminated shellfish samples, the modified PSP-ELISA results showed a sensitivity of 100% (88 of 88) and a specificity of 92.3% (96 of 104) compared to the MBA results.

Microtitre plate assay for paralytic shellfish toxins using saxiphilin: gauging the effects of shellfish extract matrices, salts and pH upon assay performance.

Saxiphilin is a hydrophilic protein with a high affinity and specificity for paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) found in the circulatory fluid of many invertebrates and ectothermic vertebrates. Saxiphilin has been found to be closely related to the iron binding transferrins, a group of proteins that range in molecular weight between 70 and 90 kDa. One saxiphilin isoform, that from the centipede Ethmostigmus rubripes, has been used to develop a microtitre plate assay for PSTs which relies upon detection of bound tritiated saxitoxin (STX). In this study, this assay was challenged with differing c

Methodologies for Detoxifying Bivalves from Marine Paralytic Shellfish Toxins.

The marine environment emerges as a key provider of food and sustainable products. However, these benefits are accompanied by numerous challenges owing to harmful algal blooms (HAB) and their associated biotoxins, which accumulate in organisms, like bivalves, threatening seafood quality. Among the various biotoxins, paralytic shellfish toxins (PST), the causative agents of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), are among the most potent, lethal, and frequently reported instances of human intoxication. Removing PST from marine system is particularly challenging because of their hydrophilicity, su
