Production of Manganese Oxide Nanoparticles by Shewanella Species.

UNLABELLED: Several species of the bacterial genus Shewanella are well-known dissimilatory reducers of manganese under anaerobic conditions. In fact, Shewanella oneidensis is one of the most well studied of all metal-reducing bacteria. In the current study, a number of Shewanella strains were tested for manganese-oxidizing capacity under aerobic conditions. All were able to oxidize Mn(II) and to produce solid dark brown manganese oxides. Shewanella loihica strain PV-4 was the strongest oxidizer, producing oxides at a rate of 20.3 mg/liter/day and oxidizing Mn(II) concentrations of up to 9 mM.

Shewanella algae: a rare cause of necrotizing fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: The genus Shewanella consists of motile, gram-negative, facultative anaerobes found in marine environments. Shewanella putrefaciens and Shewanella algae are the two species with documented pathogenicity in human beings. Most documented cases of S. algae infection worldwide have been reported in the context of bacteremia, cellulitis, and acute exacerbations of chronic otitis media in predisposed individuals. We report a rare case of necrotizing soft tissue infection by S. algae in an immunocompetent individual. The infection followed exposure to S. algae in contaminated water in New

Primary Shewanella alga septicemia in a patient on hemodialysis.

We report the first Japanese case of primary septicemia with Shewanella alga and also describe the bacteriological characteristics of and results of antibiotic susceptibility tests of the isolate. S. alga was repeatedly isolated, at times simultaneously with Escherichia coli, from the blood of a 64-year-old female undergoing hemodialysis. The isolated organism was determined to be S. alga based on recently published identification criteria, such as hemolysis on sheep blood agar, no acid production from carbohydrates, and growth on agar containing 6. 5% NaCl. Results of antibiotic susceptibilit

First case of human spondylodiscitis due to Shewanella algae.

We present the first case of human spondylodiscitis due to Shewanella algae. Our patient did not have any predisposing factors. The portal of entry was probably a cutaneous lesion on the leg, exposed to seawater. Bacteria were isolated in pure culture from a needle biopsy specimen of the vertebral disk. Automated identification systems identified the organism as Shewanella putrefaciens. However, molecular biology identified it as S. algae. Treatment with ceftriaxone and amikacin, then ciprofloxacin successfully addressed the infection. We also review four published cases of human osteoarticula

Characterization of two novel Fe(III)-reducing and electrogenic bacteria, Shewanella ferrihydritica sp. nov. and Shewanella electrica sp. nov., isolated from mangrove sediment.

Three novel strains in the genus Shewanella, designated A3AT, C31T and C32, were isolated from mangrove sediment samples. They were facultative anaerobic, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, flagellum-harbouring, oxidase- and catalase-positive, electrogenic and capable of using Fe(III) as an electron acceptor during anaerobic growth. Results of phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene and genomic sequences revealed that the strains should be assigned to the genus Shewanella. The 16S rRNA gene similarity, average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between

Insights into uranium enrichment of indigenous electroactive Shewanella putrefaciens.

Bioremediation of uranium-contaminated environments using native bacteria shows great promise. While Shewanella putrefaciens (S. putrefaciens) is a known uranium reducing bacterium, the mechanisms and adaptability of indigenous strains from uranium mine tailings remain unexplored. This study isolated a dominant indigenous strain of S. putrefaciens and employed a combined genomic and spectroscopic approach to elucidate its unique uranium fixation mechanism. Microbial diversity analysis confirmed the dominance of Shewanella in the oligotrophic and radioactive tailings. Whole-genome sequencing re

[Shewanella algae sepsis after bathing in the Baltic Sea].

Shewanella algae is a typical marine bacterium. It is a rare cause of disease in humans, especially in colder sea environments. In this case report, an otherwise healthy elderly male presents with sepsis caused by S. algae a few days after bathing in the Baltic Sea with open wounds from gardening. He was successfully treated with antibiotics and standard sepsis treatment. Since global temperatures are rising, infections with S. algae might become more common in Scandinavia, and clinicians in these areas should be aware of the risk of infection.

Genome characterization of Shewanella algae in Hainan Province, China.

Shewanella algae is an emerging marine zoonotic pathogen. In this study, we first reported the Shewanella algae infections in patients and animals in Hainan Province, China. Currently, there is still relatively little known about the whole-genome characteristics of Shewanella algae in most tropical regions, including in southern China. Here, we sequenced the 62 Shewanella algae strains isolated from Hainan Province and combined with the whole genomes sequences of 144 Shewanella algae genomes from public databases to analyze genomic features. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Shewanella algae

Shewanella infection in humans: Epidemiology, clinical features and pathogenicity.

The genus Shewanella consists of Gram-negative proteobacteria that are ubiquitously distributed in environment. As the members of this genus have rapidly increased within the past decade, several species have become emerging pathogens worldwide, attracting the attention of the medical community. These species are also associated with severe community- and hospital-acquired infections. Patients infected with Shewanella spp. had experiences of occupational or recreational exposure; meanwhile, the process of infection is complex and the pathogenicity is influenced by a variety of factors. Here, a

Neonatal sepsis caused by Shewanella algae: A case report.

Sepsis remains a leading cause of mortality among neonates, especially in developing countries. Most cases of neonatal sepsis are attributed to Escherichia coli and other members of the Enterobacteriaceae family. Shewanella algae (S. algae) is a gram-negative saprophytic bacillus, commonly associated with the marine environment, which has been isolated from humans. Early onset neonatal sepsis caused by S. algae is uncommon. We report a case of S. algae blood stream infection in a newborn with early onset neonatal sepsis.

Energy-dependent stability of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 biofilms.

Stability and resistance to dissolution are key features of microbial biofilms. How these macroscopic properties are determined by the physiological state of individual biofilm cells in their local physical-chemical and cellular environment is largely unknown. In order to obtain molecular and energetic insight into biofilm stability, we investigated whether maintenance of biofilm stability is an energy-dependent process and whether transcription and/or translation is required for biofilm dissolution. We found that in 12-hour-old Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 biofilms, a reduction in cellular ATP

Shewanella infection in decompensated liver disease: a septic case.

Shewanella species are an unusual cause of disease in humans. However, reports of Shewanella infections have been increasing, and hepatobiliary disease has been proposed as a predisposing factor following a critical course. We report the first Japanese septic case of decompensated liver disease in which this bacterium acted as a definite pathogen. A 67-year-old Japanese man with primary sclerosing cholangitis was admitted to our hospital complaining of fever, general fatigue, pain, and a rash on the lower left extremity. He was tentatively diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis caused by Vibrio

Skin and soft-tissue manifestations of Shewanella putrefaciens infection.

Shewanella putrefaciens, a saprophytic gram-negative rod, is infrequently recovered from clinical specimens. Although a number of clinical syndromes have been attributed to S. putrefaciens, the pathogenic role of this agent remains largely undefined. We report 16 cases of S. putrefaciens infection that occurred at the Veterans General Hospital-Kaohsiung in Taiwan between 1990 and 1995. S. putrefaciens infection was associated with a wide clinical spectrum including bacteremia/septicemia, skin and soft-tissue infection, biliary tract infection, peritonitis, and empyema. Five of our patients had

Prevalence, Antibiotic Resistance, and Control of Pathogenic Shewanella in Seafoods.

Some Shewanella spp. have been classified as emerging pathogens and are a concern for food safety. Species such as Shewanella algae and Shewanella putrefaciens are known to cause soft tissue necrosis and invasive infections from marine exposure. Seafood consumption has been linked to Shewanella illnesses, raising concerns about public health risks. Seafood consumption has been on the rise in recent years due to its reported benefits and overall positive health and nutritional perception of consumers. However, an emerging seafood pathogen, Shewanella spp., threatens the safety of these products

Expression of copA and cusA in Shewanella during copper stress.

Copper homeostasis is tightly regulated in all living cells as a result of the necessity and toxicity of this metal in free cationic form. In Gram-negative bacteria CPx-type ATPases (e.g. CopA in Escherichia coli) and heavy-metal efflux RND proteins (e.g. CusA in E. coli) play an important role in transport of copper across the cytoplasmic and outer membrane. We investigated the expression of CusA- and CopA-like proteins in Shewanella oneidensis MR1 and Shewanella strain MB4, a Mn(IV)-reducing isolate from a metal-polluted harbour sediment. Q-PCR analysis of total mRNA extracted from cultures
