Shewanella putrefaciens: A Rare Cause of Refractory Peritonsillar Abscess in an Immunocompetent Adult.

Shewanella species are motile, oxidase-positive, non-fermenting Gram-negative bacilli widely distributed in marine and aquatic environments. Although primarily environmental organisms, Shewanella spp. are rare human pathogens, most often associated with skin and soft tissue infections. Involvement of the head and neck region is exceptional. We report the case of a 28-year-old immunocompetent male with no history of seawater exposure who presented with a one-week history of odynophagia, fever, trismus, and dysphagia. Clinical examination revealed a unilateral peritonsillar abscess. Needle aspir

Shewanella putrefaciens, a rare human pathogen: A review from a clinical perspective.

Shewanella putrefaciens is a gramnegative, facultatively anaerobic, rod shaped bacterium. It belongs to the class of the Gammaproteobacteria and was first described in 1931. S. putrefaciens is part of the marine microflora and especially present in moderate and warm climates. The bacterium is a rare oppurtonistic human pathogen associated mainly with intra-abdominal as well as skin and soft tissue infections. However, it has also been reported in association with more severe diseases such as pneumonia, intracerebral and ocular infections and endocarditis. In these cases the clinical courses ar

A rare case of Shewanella putrefaciens bacteremia in a patient of road traffic accident.

Shewanella putrefaciens rarely causes human infection. These are mostly found in environment and food stuffs. Shewanella are often found in mixed culture. It has been implicated in cellulitis, otitis media, and septicemia. It may be found in respiratory tract, urine, feces, and pleural fluid. There is no definite guideline for therapeutic option. In general, these are susceptible to various antimicrobial agents but are often resistant to penicillin and cephalothin. We report a rare case of bacteremia by S. putrefaciens in a patient of head injury with polytrauma after a road traffic accident.

Biogenic FeS accelerates reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32.

Dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria (DMRB) widely exist in the subsurface environment and are involved in various contaminant degradation and element geochemical cycling processes. Recent studies suggest that DMRB can biosynthesize metal nanoparticles during metal reduction, but it is unclear yet how such biogenic nanomaterials would affect their decontamination behaviors. In this study, we found that the dechlorination rates of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 was significantly increased by 8 times with the formation of biogenic ferrous sulfide (FeS) nanoparticles.

Differential degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons by Shewanella putrefaciens under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.

The complexity of crude oil composition, combined with the fluctuating oxygen level in contaminated environments, poses challenges for the bioremediation of oil pollutants, because of compound-specific microbial degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons under certain conditions. As a result, facultative bacteria capable of breaking down petroleum hydrocarbons under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions are presumably effective, however, this hypothesis has not been directly tested. In the current investigation, Shewanella putrefaciens CN32, a facultative anaerobic bacterium, was used to degrade pe

AQDS-functionalized biochar enhances the bioreduction of Cr(VI) by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32.

The bioreduction of toxic chromium(VI) to sparingly soluble chromium(III) represents an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method for remediating Cr contamination. Usually, this bioreduction process is slow and requires the addition of quinone compounds as electron shuttles to enhance the reaction rate. However, the dissolved quinone compounds are susceptible to loss with water flow, thereby limiting their effectiveness. To address this challenge, this study loaded anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), a typical quinone compound, onto biochar (BC) to create a novel solid-phase electro

EDDS enhanced Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 and α-FeOOH reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride.

S,S-ethylenediamine-N,N-disuccinic acid (EDDS) enhanced reductive dissolution of α-FeOOH by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 (CN32), resulting in formation of surface-bound Fe(II) species (FeIIEDDS) to improve reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride (CT). The pseudo-first-order rate constants for bio-reduction extents of α-FeOOH by CN32 in the presence of 1.36 mM EDDS was 0.023 ± 0.0003 d-1 which was higher than without EDDS. The enhancement mechanism of bio-reduction was attributed to the strong complexation ability of EDDS to formed FeIIIEDDS, which could be better utilized by CN32. The

Chelating Effect of Siderophore Desferrioxamine-B on Uranyl Biomineralization Mediated by Shewanella putrefaciens.

In contaminated water and soil, little is known about the role and mechanism of the biometabolic molecule siderophore desferrioxamine-B (DFO) in the biogeochemical cycle of uranium due to complicated coordination and reaction networks. Here, a joint experimental and quantum chemical investigation is carried out to probe the biomineralization of uranyl (UO22+, referred to as U(VI) hereafter) induced by Shewanella putrefaciens (abbreviated as S. putrefaciens) in the presence of DFO and Fe3+ ion. The results show that the production of mineralized solids {hydrogen-uranium mica [H2(UO2)2(PO4)2·8H2

Effects of electron donor and acceptor conditions on reductive dehalogenation of tetrachloromethane by Shewanella putrefaciens 200.

Shewanella putrefaciens 200 is a nonfermentative bacterium that is capable of dehalogenating tetrachloromethane to chloroform and other, unidentified products under anaerobic conditions. Since S. putrefaciens 200 can respire anaerobically by using a variety of terminal electron acceptors, including NO3-, NO2-, and Fe(III), it provides a unique opportunity to study the competitive effects of different electron acceptors on dehalogenation in a single organism. The results of batch studies showed that dehalogenation of CT by S. putrefaciens 200 was inhibited by O2, 10 mM NO3-, and 3 mM NO2-, but

Menaquinone synthesis genes are critical for the decolorization of acid yellow 36 in Shewanella putrefaciens CN32.

The anaerobic decolorization of azo dyes by Shewanella species relies on an intricate electron transfer network, yet the full complement of genes involved remains incompletely defined. In this study, we used mini-Tn5 transposon mutagenesis to identify genes required for the decolorization of the azo dye acid yellow 36 in Shewanella putrefaciens CN32. Two genes were uncovered: menD, encoding a key enzyme in menaquinone biosynthesis, and lutB, involved in lactate metabolism. Deletion of menD caused a nearly complete loss of decolorization capacity without affecting growth. Supplementation with v

Effect of humic acid on bioreduction of facet-dependent hematite by Shewanella putrefaciens CN-32.

Interfacial reactions between iron (Fe) (hydr)oxide surfaces and the activity of bacteria during dissimilatory Fe reduction affect extracellular electron transfer. The presence of organic matter (OM) and exposed facets of Fe (hydr)oxides influence this process. However, the underlying interfacial mechanism of facet-dependent hematite and its toxicity toward microbes during bioreduction in the presence of OM remains unknown. Herein, humic acid (HA), as typical OM, was selected to investigate its effect on the bioreduction of hematite {100} and {001}. When HA concentration was increased from 0 t

Ampicillin promotes the biofilm formation of Shewanella putrefaciens through the c-di-GMP-regulated BpfAGD system.

Although many Shewanella strains are naturally resistant to some β-lactam antibiotics, research into the effect of these antibiotics on Shewanella biofilm formation is scarce. Shewanella putrefaciens is not only known as an important seafood spoilage bacterium but can also cause infection in several aquatic animals. In addition, it is a rare opportunistic human pathogen. The present study found that although some antibiotics from cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams repress the biofilm formation of S. putrefaciens CN32, multiple penicillin antibiotics increase its biofilm formation. Chromium(VI) reductase activity is associated with the cytoplasmic membrane of anaerobically grown Shewanella putrefaciens MR-1.

Shewanella putrefaciens MR-1 can reduce a diverse array of compounds under anaerobic conditions, including manganese and iron oxides, fumarate, nitrate, and many other compounds. These reductive processes are apparently linked to a complex electron transport system. Chromium (Cr) is a toxic and mutagenic metal and bacteria could potentially be utilized to immobilize Cr by reducing the soluble and bioavailable state, Cr(VI), to the insoluble and less bioavailable state, Cr(III). Formate-dependent Cr(VI) reductase activity was detected in anaerobically grown cells of S. putrefaciens MR-1, with h

Multidrug-resistant Shewanella putrefaciens isolated from ascitic fluid in a patient with decompensated cirrhosis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Shewanella putrefaciens is a rare opportunistic pathogen found in marine, freshwater, and soil environments. Although it is increasingly recognized as a cause of human infection, reports of NDM- and OXA-48-like carbapenemase-producing S. putrefaciens isolated from ascitic fluid in patients with decompensated cirrhosis remain exceedingly rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old man with chronic hepatitis B-related decompensated cirrhosis and diabetes mellitus was readmitted with progressive abdominal distension and oliguria. He had no history of seawater or freshwater exposure or raw

Coupling effect of phytic acid and chlorite on uranium removal by Shewanella putrefaciens under simulated natural environment.

Understanding the transport and transformation of uranium species in surface and underground water environments, including biological migration, is a critical issue in nuclear environmental research. While it is known that uranium is primarily immobilized through reduction and mineralization with clay minerals and microorganisms, the coupled processes involving these motifs and their molecular mechanisms under multiple environmental factors remain elusive. In this work, using phytic acid (denoted as IP6 hereinafter) as a typical organic ligand and chlorite (a layered hydrous aluminum silicate

Anaerobic and aerobic regulation of H2S formation and spoilage mechanism of Shewanella putrefaciens via integrated multi-approaches.

Shewanella putrefaciens is a specific spoilage organism, yet the spoilage mechanism and its correlation with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) formation under anaerobic and aerobic conditions are still largely unknown. The study found that H₂S content and spoilage potential of the anaerobic group were significantly lower than those of the aerobic group at 30 °C and 4 °C. Aerobic conditions increased the H₂S content, intensified the degree of protein degradation, and caused significant changes in quality indicators such as pH and water-holding capacity in the fish meat inoculated with S. putrefaciens.
