Characterization of tree shrew telomeres and telomerase.

The use of tree shrews as experimental animals for biomedical research is a new practice. Several recent studies suggest that tree shrews are suitable for studying cancers, including breast cancer, glioblastoma, lung cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the telomeres and the telomerase of tree shrews have not been studied to date. Here, we characterize telomeres and telomerase in tree shrews. The telomere length of tree shrews is approximately 23 kb, which is longer than that of primates and shorter than that of mice, and it is extended in breast tumor tissues according to Southern b

Toxoplasma gondii in rodents and shrews in Armenia, Transcaucasia.

Toxoplasma gondii infections in small mammals are important because they serve as source of infection for the felids who excrete environmentally resistant oocysts in their feces. Here, the authors sought evidence for T. gondii infection in shrews and rodents in Armenia for the first time. Toxoplasma gondii DNA was detected in tissues of trapped animals using a specific PCR targeting gene with a non-coding fragment length of 529 bp. Toxoplasma gondii DNA was detected in 15 out of 137 (10.9%) samples from small mammals from 6 different localities of Armenia for the first time.

AA-amyloidosis in captive northern tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri).

A high prevalence of AA-amyloidosis was identified in a breeding colony of northern tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) in a retrospective analysis, with amyloid deposits in different organs being found in 26/36 individuals (72%). Amyloid deposits, confirmed by Congo red staining, were detected in kidneys, intestines, skin, and lymph nodes, characteristic of systemic amyloidosis. Immunohistochemically, the deposited amyloid was intensely positive with anti-AA-antibody (clone mc4), suggesting AA-amyloidosis. The kidneys were predominantly affected (80%), where amyloid deposits ranged from mild to se

Incrimination of shrews as a reservoir for Powassan virus.

Powassan virus lineage 2 (deer tick virus) is an emergent threat to American public health, causing severe neurologic disease. Its life cycle in nature remains poorly understood. We use a host-specific retrotransposon-targeted real time PCR assay to test the hypothesis that white-footed mice, considered the main eastern U.S. reservoir of the coinfecting agent of Lyme disease, is the reservoir for deer tick virus. Of 20 virus-infected host-seeking nymphal black-legged ticks 65% fed on shrews and none on mice. The proportion of ticks feeding on shrews at a site is positively associated with prev

Fleas of Shrews and Rodents in Rural Lowland Taiwan.

Fleas transmit a variety of pathogens to humans but are relatively understudied in comparison to mosquitoes and ticks, including in Taiwan, where fleas in rural lowlands have never been systematically surveyed. In total, 700 fleas of four species were collected from 1,260 shrews and rodents at nine counties across lowland Taiwan. Nosopsyllus nicanus Jordan (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae) and Xenopsylla cheopis Rothschild (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) were the most abundant flea species (79.0 and 14.6% of total fleas, respectively); the former was largely limited to the islets, while the latter was

Structural and functional characterization of enamel pigmentation in shrews.

Pigmented tooth enamel occurs in several vertebrate clades, ranging from mammals to fish. Although an iron compound is associated with this orange to red colored pigmentation, its chemical and structural organization within the enamel is unknown. To determine the nature of the iron compound, we investigated heavily pigmented teeth of the northern short-tailed shrew Blarina brevicauda using combined characterization techniques such as scanning and transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We found that the pigmentation of the enamel with an iron content of around 8wt%

Cryopreservation of epididymal sperm in tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri).

Cryopreservation of sperm from tree shrews, which are considered primitive primates, would enhance genetic management and breeding programs. Epididymal sperm were surgically harvested from male tree shrews, cryopreserved in two Tes-Tris-based cryodiluents, and used in four experiments. In Experiment 1, there were no significant differences in motility and acrosome integrity among five concentrations of egg yolk in TTE after cooling to 4 °C. However, sperm frozen in TTE containing 20% egg yolk at -172 °C/min had better (P < 0.05) post-thaw motility and acrosome integrity. In Experiment 2, sperm

Haemoparasites of common shrews (Sorex araneus) in Northwest England.

The presence of haemoparasites belonging to the taxa Anaplasma, Bartonella and Trypanosoma was determined among 76 common shrews (Sorex araneus) from Northwest England. Anaplasma phagocytophilum DNA was recovered from the blood of 1 shrew (1.3%), with the amplified 16S rRNA sequence identical to one previously reported from a bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus). Trypanosoma spp. DNA was detected in 9 shrews (11.8%), the amplified 18S rDNA fragments being indistinguishable from one another, and distinct from previously published data. This represents the first report of trypanosome infection in

First evidence of poisonous shrews with an envenomation apparatus.

Herein, we report evidence of an envenomation apparatus (EA) in two different species of extinct "giant" shrews, Beremendia and an indeterminate soricine (Mammalia, Eulipotyphla, Soricidae), documented by very well preserved fossil specimens recovered from two Early Pleistocene cave deposits of the Sierra de Atapuerca in Burgos, Spain. The two soricine taxa from Atapuerca have evolved specialized teeth as EAs, which differ from those of recently reported mammals of the Paleocene age, being more similar to the ones described in the modern Solenodon. This discovery reveals the first instance of

Evidence for echolocation in Asian shrew moles.

Echolocation is an adaptive sensory behavior that enables animals to navigate and perceive their surroundings in environments where vision is ineffective. This ability has been hypothesized to be widespread among nocturnal mammals with reduced eyesight, particularly in insectivorous moles. Here, we found that Asian shrew moles (subfamily Uropsilinae) produce ultrasonic pulses in the frequency range of 50∼100 kHz, which structurally resemble frequency-modulated echolocation calls found in other well-known echolocating mammals. Behavioral experiments further confirmed that Asian shrew moles use

Can Shrews Avoid Competition When Hutchinson's Ecological Rule Is Disobeyed?

It is established that Hutchinson's ratio of the weights and sizes of the body and foraging organs in similar species is not fully obeyed in shrew species of the genus Sorex. Similarity in the centroid size of the mandible was observed in the large species S. isodon and S. araneus. Differences in the shape of the mandible, which is intensely used in foraging, were detected between the species by geometric morphometrics. Interspecific differences were found in mandibular indices, which reflect trophic specialization and functional features of the mandibles. Shrews can therefore avoid competitio

Brain mass and cranial nerve size in shrews and moles.

We investigated the relationship between body size, brain size, and fibers in selected cranial nerves in shrews and moles. Species include tiny masked shrews (S. cinereus) weighing only a few grams and much larger mole species weighing up to 90 grams. It also includes closely related species with very different sensory specializations - such as the star-nosed mole and the common, eastern mole. We found that moles and shrews have tiny optic nerves with fiber counts not correlated with body or brain size. Auditory nerves were similarly small but increased in fiber number with increasing brain an

[Measurement and analysis of anatomical parameter values in tree shrews].

Anatomical parameter values in tree shrews are major biological characteristic indicators in laboratory animals. Body size, bones and mammilla, organ weights, coefficient intestinal canal and other anatomical data were measured and analyzed in laboratory domesticated tree shrews (7 to 9 months of age). Measurement of 31 anatomical parameters showed that body height, width of the right ear, ileum and colon had significant differences between males and females (P<0.05). Highly significant differences were also found in body slanting length, chest depth, torso length, left and right forelimb leng

Epidemiology of Bartonella infection in rodents and shrews in Taiwan.

During the period of August 2002 and November 2004, an epidemiological investigation for Bartonella infection was conducted in small mammals in Taiwan. Using whole blood culture on chocolate agar plates, Bartonella species were successfully isolated from 41.3% of the 310 animals tested. The isolation rate of Bartonella species varied among different animal species, including 52.7% of the 169 Rattus norvegicus, 28.6% of the 126 Sucus murinus, 10% of the 10 Rattus rattus and 66.7% of the three Rattus losea. Bacteremia prevalence also varied with the origin of the animals, as 56.2% of the animals

Measuring electroretinograms in tree shrews with a portable electrophysiology device.

PURPOSE: The RETeval portable flash electrophysiology device is extensively used for assessing retinal function in humans. However, its utility in measuring electroretinograms in preclinical studies has been less explored. Tree shrews (small diurnal mammals closely related to primates) are a well-established animal model of emmetropization known to exhibit robust responses to visual cues and mimic human juvenile-onset myopia. This study aimed to evaluate the intra- and inter-session repeatability of full-field photopic electroretinograms (ERGs) recorded using the RETeval system in tree shrews.

Comparative infectivity of EBV subtypes in tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri).

BACKGROUND: The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) has a high global prevalence and is strongly associated with the pathogenesis of diverse diseases. Types 1 (T1) and 2 (T2) represent the two major EBV subtypes. However, their infectivity and pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear. We aimed to explore the differences between T1 and T2 EBV infections using the tree shrew model. METHODS: T1 and T2 EBVs were purified from the supernatant of EBV-producing cells lines B95-8 and P3HR-1, respectively cell line. Eighteen tree shrews (evenly divided by sex) were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 6). Each ani

Advances in the Comprehensive Tree Shrew Brain Atlas.

The tree shrew is a small mammal characterized by a short gestation period, a relatively short lifespan, and low maintenance costs. It exhibits a close genetic relationship with primates and humans. The tree shrew possesses an eight-layered neocortex, limited cortical gyrification, an expanded subventricular zone, and sensory, visual, and motor cortices that resemble those of primates, along with comparable neurotransmitter systems, cognitive potential, and neural flexibility. These features render it a promising animal model for neurological disease research. A comprehensive understanding of

A tree shrew model for steroid-associated osteonecrosis.

Osteonecrosis is a common human disease in orthopedics. It is difficult to treat, and half of patients may need artificial joint replacement, resulting in a considerable economic burden and a reduction in quality of life. Hormones are one of the major causes of osteonecrosis and high doses of corticosteroids are considered the most dangerous factor. Because of the complexity of treatment, we still need a better animal model that can be widely used in drug development and testing. Tree shrews are more closely related to primates than rodents. As such, we constructed a successful tree shrew mode

Microchip-associated sarcoma in a shrew (Suncus murinus).

A 16-mo-old female house musk shrew (Suncus murinus) with a 1-wk history of a rapidly growing subcutaneous mass in the interscapsular region was euthanized and submitted for necropsy. Macroscopic examination identified an irregular, well-demarcated, solid, tan-white subcutaneous mass. A small cavity containing a microchip device was present at the center of the mass. In addition, massive splenomegaly was evident grossly. Histologically, the subcutaneous mass comprised spindle cells arranged in a storiform pattern of interweaving bundles, consistent with a high-grade soft tissue sarcoma with mu
