Investigating the role of vestibular function in motion sickness and visually induced motion sickness by multiple vestibular function tests.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness (MS) and visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) are vestibular system-related conditions affecting balance. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of vestibular function and susceptibility in MS/VIMS in healthy college students and to evaluate the effectiveness of various vestibular function tests in detecting these disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five hundred young adults, grouped by motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire-short (MSSQ-S) and visually induced motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire-short (VIMSSQ-S) questionnaires, were further analyzed v

Individual differences in the temporal progression of motion sickness and anxiety: the role of passengers' trait anxiety and motion sickness history.

The objective of the study is to show that trait anxiety and motion sickness history are responsible for different temporal progressions of sickness in passengers. The level of inflight anxiety and inflight sickness severity was monitored for 124 passengers in a full-motion cabin simulator during a short-haul flight with four different flight segments. Four groups with different characteristics in trait anxiety and motion sickness susceptibility showed different profiles of inflight sickness development. High trait anxiety was responsible for high inflight anxiety and a constantly high level o

Beyond sensory conflict: The role of beliefs and perception in motion sickness.

Illusory self-motion often provokes motion sickness, which is commonly explained in terms of an inter-sensory conflict that is not in accordance with previous experience. Here we address the influence of cognition in motion sickness and show that such a conflict is not provocative when the observer believes that the motion illusion is indeed actually occurring. Illusory self-motion and motion sickness were elicited in healthy human participants who were seated on a stationary rotary chair inside a rotating optokinetic drum. Participants knew that both chair and drum could rotate but were unawa

A re-investigation of the role of utricular asymmetries in Space Motion Sickness.

During the first days of spaceflight, about 50-70% of the astronauts experience symptoms of Space Motion Sickness (SMS). It has been proposed that an asymmetry between the left and right otolith organs contributes to an astronaut's individual susceptibility. A recently developed test to measure unilateral utricular function enabled us to re-investigate this so-called otolith asymmetry hypothesis, while using the paradigm of sustained centrifugation as a ground based model for SMS. This latter paradigm has been shown to elicit symptoms similar to those of SMS and is referred to as Sickness Indu

The role of pulmonary intravascular macrophages in the pathogenesis of African horse sickness.

African horse sickness (AHS) is a disease of equids, characterized by severe pulmonary oedema and caused by an orbivirus. To determine the role of pulmonary intravascular macrophages (PIMs) in the development of pulmonary microvascular changes in this disease, five horses were given an intravenous inoculation of 10(6)TCID50of serotype 4 of AHS virus. Viral replication was detected in endothelial cells, PIMs, interstitial macrophages and fibroblasts. Alveolar and interstitial oedema, and changes in pulmonary microvasculature, consisting mainly of the sequestration of neutrophils and the formati

[Role of external respiration in the formation of the autonomic component in motion sickness].

Time course variations in the ventilation and gas exchange functions of the lungs, gas composition and acid-base equilibrium of blood were investigated in 22 male test subjects, aged 27-49 years, who were kept in the head-down position (-8 degrees) and rocked in parallel swings. The subjects susceptible to motion sickness developed lung hyperventilation and concomitant alveolar-arterial hypocapnia and respiratory alkalosis which may potentiate a symptom-complex of vestibular disorders. To control hypocapnia, the subjects used a hypercapnic breathing mixture (4% CO2, 96% air). This eliminated t

Motion sickness: a modulatory role for the central cholinergic nervous system.

The present review has extended the general theory of motion sickness proposed by Wood and Graybiel [135, 136] by identifying specific neurophysiological mechanisms that are involved in motion sickness and by interpreting the actions of both scopolamine and amphetamine as effective anti-motion sickness drugs within this neurophysiological context. The neurochemical and neurophysiological effects of scopolamine have been reviewed in relationship to central cholinergic pathways. Cholinergic pathways have been associated with both the perception and expression of normal and excessive levels of mo

Atrial versus ventricular pacing in sick sinus syndrome: the role of retrograde ventriculoatrial conduction.

This study compares the acute haemodynamic effect of atrial versus ventricular pacing, and ventricular pacing in the presence versus absence of retrograde ventriculoatrial conduction. Twenty-two patients with symptomatic sick sinus syndrome were tested: 12 with ventriculoatrial conduction (Group 1) and 10 without it (Group 2). Cardiac haemodynamics were measured by thermodilution technique at spontaneous rhythm as baseline and during atrial versus ventricular pacing at two different pacing rates. Atrial pacing offered an average augmentation for 20% in cardiac index from spontaneous rhythm in

Quality of sick child management by health extension workers: role of a complex improvement intervention.

BACKGROUND: Despite the expansion of the Integrated Community Case Management services for childhood illness, quality and utilization of services have remained low. To address the problem, the Government of Ethiopia introduced a complex intervention that included community engagement, capacity building of health workers and enhanced district-level ownership of sick child management. We examined whether this complex intervention was associated with improved management of sick children by health extension workers. METHODS: The study was conducted in four Ethiopian regions. A baseline survey was

The role of pacing modality in determining long-term survival in the sick sinus syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the atrial-based pacing modalities ("physiologic pacing") improve survival when compared with single-chamber ventricular pacing in patients with the sick sinus syndrome. DESIGN: Retrospective, nonrandomized study. SETTING: A tertiary care teaching hospital. PATIENTS: A total of 507 patients with a mean age of 66 years who received an initial pacemaker for the sick sinus syndrome between January 1980 and December 1989. Pacing modes were ventricular (22%), atrial (4%), and dual-chamber (74%). MEASUREMENTS: Total and cardiovascular mortality rates. Mean follow-

Potential role of multiple rectal biopsies in the diagnosis of equine grass sickness.

Two samples were taken postmortem from the rectum of each of 14 horses with grass sickness and 10 control horses, and four sections stained with haematoxylin and eosin were examined. By using as a criterion of grass sickness the presence of three chromatolytic neurons, 10 of the 14 cases were positive and none of the control horses was positive, giving a sensitivity of 71 per cent and a specificity of 100 per cent. No other histological features appeared to be of diagnostic value, and staining for Nissl substance in neurons with cresyl fast violet and methyl green-pyronin did not improve the s

Role of the area postrema in three putative measures of motion sickness in the rat.

After thermal cauterization of the area postrema in rats the absence of conditioned taste aversion to sucrose paired with lithium chloride (0.15 M, 3.3 ml/kg) was used as a pharmacologic/behavioral index of area postrema damage. In a subsequent experiment the effects of area postrema lesions on three measures proposed as species-relevant measures of motion sickness were studied, using off-vertical rotation at 150 degrees/s for either 30 or 90 min. Lesions of area postrema did not alter postrotational suppression of drinking or amount of defecation during motion. The initial acquisition of cond

The role of heart rate variability in acute mountain sickness: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is associated with symptoms arising from an individual's failure to acclimatize to high-altitude environments characterized by hypobaric hypoxia. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been proposed as a potential predictor of AMS, but results from individual studies have been inconsistent. Therefore, this study investigated HRV before and after ascent to provide a more comprehensive review of the relationship between HRV and AMS. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of MEDLINE, PubMed, and Google Scholar from inception to August 2023. Studies measurin

The role of vision in sensory integration models for predicting motion perception and sickness.

Users of automated vehicles will engage in other activities and take their eyes off the road, making them prone to motion sickness. To resolve this, the current paper validates models predicting sickness in response to motion and visual conditions. We validate published models of vestibular and visual sensory integration that have been used for predicting motion sickness through sensory conflict. We use naturalistic driving data and laboratory motion (and vection) paradigms, such as sinusoidal translation and rotation at different frequencies, Earth-Vertical Axis Rotation, Off-Vertical Axis Ro
