The ability of plant extracts and preparations to reduce inflammation has been proven by different means in experimental models. Since inflammation enhances the release of specific mediators, inhibition of their production can be used to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of plants widely used in folk medicine for this purpose. The study was performed for leaves and flowers of Malva sylvestris, and leaves of Sida cordifolia and Pelargonium graveolens. These are three plant species known in Brazil as Malva. The anti-inflammatory activity of extracts and fractions (hexane, chloroform, ethy

With rising demand for wood products and reduced wood harvesting due to the European Green Deal, alternative lignocellulosic materials for insulation are necessary. In this work, we manufactured reference particleboard from industrial particles and fifteen different board variants from alternative lignocellulosic plants material, i.e., five types of perennial plant biomass in three substitutions: 30, 50 and 75% of their share in the board with a nominal density of 250 kg/m3. Within the analysis of manufactured boards, the mechanical, chemical and thermal properties were investigated-internal b

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: This study reports a neurological disease unrecognised until now in ponies in southern Brazil.
HYPOTHESIS: Epidemiological data strongly suggests that the ingestion of Sida carpinifolia is involved in the aetiology. We tested the hypothesis that it is an acquired lyosomal storage disease.
METHODS: Following the death of 3 ponies, all ponies from the premises were closely monitored; epidemiological data and clinical findings carefully recorded. Fragments of several organs, including CNS, were fixed in neutral formalin and embedded in paraffin-wax. Sections were s

BACKGROUND: Skin diseases have been of major concern recently due to their association with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immunity Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS). The study area (northern Maputaland) has the highest HIV infection rate in South Africa, which made them more prone to a wide range of skin conditions. Fungal infections due to the hot climate and overcrowding households are common in this area, as well as burn accidents due to the use of wood as the major fuel for cooking. It is known that the lay people in this area depend on medicinal plants for their primary healt

Medicinal plants are employed in folk medicine as enormous reservoirs of secondary metabolites, with varied and distinctive chemical and biological properties, that can prevent, treat, or cure diseases. Consequently, the validation of traditional remedies has remained a prominent harbinger to modern drug discovery. Herein, the aerial parts of the Sida alba Linn. (Malvaceae) plant were subjected to maceration in methanol, fractionation in mixed solvent systems, and solvent-gradient column chromatography to furnish 20-hydroxyecdysone 8 and ajugasterone C 24 as pale-yellow and yellow powders in 0

Bacillus cereus is frequently associated with food-borne intoxications, and its emetic toxin cereulide causes emesis and nausea after consumption of contaminated foods. The major source for contamination is found within contaminated raw materials containing the highly chemically resistant cereulide, independent of vegetative bacteria cells. Up to date, non-existing removal strategies for cereulide evoke the question of how the toxin is distributed within a food sample, especially cow milk. Milk samples with different milk fat contents were incubated with purified cereulide, separated by centri

Vitamin B6 is an essential cofactor of numerous enzymes, and beer may contribute substantially to its dietary intake. While vitamin B6 occurs predominantly as glycosides in plants, data on the complete vitamer profile in beer remain scarce. Here, a novel SIDA LC-MS/MS method was developed for the native quantification of pyridoxine, pyridoxal, pyridoxamine, 4-pyridoxic acid, pyridoxine-5'-β-glucoside, pyridoxine-5'-β-maltoside, and pyridoxine-5-β-cellobioside. The method was validated for linearity, precision, recovery, and limits of quantification (0.20-12.9 μg/L) and detection. Analysis of 6

This study presents the first molecular-level comparative analysis of chicken scrambled eggs and vegan scrambled eggs, identifying a total of 20 odorants using Aroma Extract Dilution Analysis (AEDA). Quantitation via Stable Isotope Dilution Assay (SIDA) and calculation of dose over threshold (DoT) factors revealed 15 key odorants with DoT factors > 1 in scrambled chicken eggs, while scrambled vegan eggs exhibited 11 key odorants with DoT factors > 1. Notably, the vegan product lacked five critical compounds: (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal (cucumber-like), 2,3-butanedione (butter-like), (E)-2-nonenal (fa

BACKGROUND: The northern part of India harbours a great diversity of medicinal plants due to its distinct geography and ecological marginal conditions. The traditional medical systems of northern India are part of a time tested culture and honored still by people today. These traditional systems have been curing complex disease for more than 3,000 years. With rapidly growing demand for these medicinal plants, most of the plant populations have been depleted, indicating a lack of ecological knowledge among communities using the plants. Thus, an attempt was made in this study to focus on the eco

An arabinan polysaccharide of low molecular weight (SC-S50, 3.2 KDa) and a structurally-related high molecular weight arabinan (SC-P50, 66 KDa) were isolated from Sida cordifolia root. NMR spectroscopy revealed the two polysaccharides were structurally similar consisting of three motifs, the main one being an α-L-arabinofuranose disaccharide (A-(1 → 5)-D) in the linear backbone; the A unit is further substituted at O-2 and O-3 positions by α-L-arabinofuranose. The two minority motifs also consist of α-1 → 5 linked L-arabinofuranose disaccharide, but in contrast, the A unit is replaced by the E
