Reduced mortality from colorectal cancer may be achieved by screening with faecal occult blood testing. Screening for neoplasia in the rectum and sigmoid colon with flexible sigmoidoscopy is suggested to be more effective, particular among persons between 50 and 60 years of age. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to assess the sigmoid distensibility during CT colonography (CTC) in patients with diverticular disease.
METHODS: Consecutive patients without a history of pelvic radiation or neoplasms underwent 150 CTC. Three radiologists in consensus evaluated axial images for colonic distention, luminal diameters (mm), diverticula, and muscular thickening.
RESULTS: The minimum colon diameter in patients with muscular thickening was significantly smaller, irrespective of the presence of diverticula (P=.009).

Liposarcomas are malignant soft tissue neoplasms usually located in the retroperitoneum, head, neck and extremities. Although secondary invasion of the gastrointestinal tract by retroperitoneal sarcomas is frequent, primary involvement is uncommon. We report a young patient with Crohn's disease in remission presenting with intussusception of the colon due to a primary liposarcoma of the sigmoid. Emergency resection confirmed the diagnosis. In this paper the authors report a case of carcinoid neoplasm in a rare localization like sigmoid colon. They describe the clinical and biological aspects of this kind of tumors, with particular regard to the tumor site and its biochemical products. A rational and prompt clinical approach to this neoplasm is considered important for the good chance of long survivals, achievable in the case of early diagnosis.

Because of unusual rarity of neoplastic sigmoid-vesical fistula in young patients the case of 43 years old woman, in whom the fistula was the consequence of sigmoid adenocarcinoma infiltration of urinary bladder, was presented. A case of basosquamous or so-called transitional cloacogenic carcinoma of the sigmoid colon, which arose above the pelvic brim at the peritoneal reflection, is reported. We were not able to find a report of this histologic type of tumor arising this far from the pectinate line of the anus, which is the most common primary site of this neoplasm. Possibilities as to the histogenesis of this tumor at this site are stated. The neoplasm also produced parathyroid hormone (PTH) and also possibly adrenal corticotrophic hormone (ACTH), which had not been previously reported for this specific neoplasm.

There is an increased incidence of second noncarcinoid neoplasms in patients with carcinoid tumors.
