Is vision continuous with cognition? The case for cognitive impenetrability of visual perception.

Although the study of visual perception has made more progress in the past 40 years than any other area of cognitive science, there remain major disagreements as to how closely vision is tied to cognition. This target article sets out some of the arguments for both sides (arguments from computer vision, neuroscience, psychophysics, perceptual learning, and other areas of vision science) and defends the position that an important part of visual perception, corresponding to what some people have called early vision, is prohibited from accessing relevant expectations, knowledge, and utilities in

Inhibitory control and psychopathology: a meta-analysis of studies using the stop signal task.

The Stop Signal Task (SST) is a measure that has been used widely to assess response inhibition. We conducted a meta-analysis of studies that examined SST performance in patients with various psychiatric disorders to determine the magnitude and generality of deficient inhibition. A five-item instrument was used to assess the methodological quality of studies. We found medium deficits in stop signal reaction time (SSRT), reflecting the speed of the inhibitory process, for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (g = 0.62), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) (g = 0.77) and schizophrenia

Accuracy of target detection in new-object and old-object displays.

In 4 experiments, the authors investigated accuracy of detecting a target among nontargets. In some experiments, the target was a second-order square of stationary lines on a background of downward-moving lines, and nontargets were second-order squares of upward-moving lines. In other experiments, target and nontarget squares and background were shades of gray. The principal comparison was between "new" and "old" object displays. In new-object displays, search items appeared abruptly and one might be a target. In old-object displays, search items appeared abruptly, and after a delay one might

Impaired recognition of traffic signs in adults with dyslexia.

Ten adults with dyslexia (4 women and 6 men, mean age: 26.8 years, range: 19-43 years) and 11 controls (5 women and 6 men, mean age: 20.5 years, range: 18-29 years) were tested on their ability to differentiate between real and false traffic signs. The stimuli, computer-presented color pictures, were chosen to minimize the applicability of verbal or written linguistic skills to the task. The adults with dyslexia recognized the traffic signs significantly less well than did the controls. Furthermore, whereas for the controls there was a significant correlation between traffic sign recognition a

Variation in the standard deviation of the lure rating distribution: Implications for estimates of recollection probability.

In word recognition semantic priming of test words increased the false-alarm rate and the mean of confidence ratings to lures. Such priming also increased the standard deviation of confidence ratings to lures and the slope of the z-ROC function, suggesting that the priming increased the standard deviation of the lure evidence distribution. The Unequal Variance Signal Detection (UVSD) model interpreted the priming as increasing the standard deviation of the lure evidence distribution. Without additional parameters the Dual Process Signal Detection (DPSD) model could only accommodate the results

Do infants possess an evolved spider-detection mechanism?

Previous studies with various non-human animals have revealed that they possess an evolved predator recognition mechanism that specifies the appearance of recurring threats. We used the preferential looking and habituation paradigms in three experiments to investigate whether 5-month-old human infants have a perceptual template for spiders that generalizes to real-world images of spiders. A fourth experiment assessed whether 5-month-olds have a perceptual template for a non-threatening biological stimulus (i.e., a flower). The results supported the hypothesis that humans, like other species, m

Human- and model-observer performance in ramp-spectrum noise: effects of regularization and object variability.

We consider detection of a nodule signal profile in noisy images meant to roughly simulate the statistical properties of tomographic image reconstructions in nuclear medicine. The images have two sources of variability arising from quantum noise from the imaging process and anatomical variability in the ensemble of objects being imaged. Both of these sources of variability are simulated by a stationary Gaussian random process. Sample images from this process are generated by filtering white-noise images. Human-observer performance in several signal-known-exactly detection tasks is evaluated th

Quantitative ocular tests for myasthenia gravis: a comparative review with detection theory analysis.

Many reports in the literature describe a variety of ocular signs in myasthenia gravis. To determine the utility of laboratory recordings of ocular signs in the evaluation for myasthenia, we reviewed all previous studies of quantitative measures of eye movements or intra-ocular pressures. We selected those studies with data presented for both myasthenic and non-myasthenic ocular palsies. Signal detection theory was used to evaluate the discriminative power of each variable. The characteristics of saccades and quick phases of optokinetic nystagmus at the start of recording were poor at distingu

Evidence for a cancellation tooth in the absence of a harmonic partial.

Detection of a target sound (e.g., a voice) is often better in a background of harmonic than inharmonic tones. This difference has been attributed to harmonic cancellation, a mechanism that integrates masker's fundamental frequency (F0) information across channels to inhibit neural responses at the F0 rate. Here, we questioned whether this mechanism would apply within an auditory channel in which a (single) harmonic partial was missing. In three different spectral regions (300-500; 900-1100; 2500-2700 Hz), we measured masked detection threshold (MDT) for a narrow noise band target against harm

Hearing a voice in the noise: auditory hallucinations and speech perception.

BACKGROUND: It has recently been suggested that auditory hallucinations are the result of a criterion shift when deciding whether or not a meaningful signal has emerged. The approach proposes that a liberal criterion may result in increased false-positive identifications, without additional perceptual deficit. To test this hypothesis, we devised a speech discrimination task and used signal detection theory (SDT) to investigate the underlying cognitive mechanisms. METHOD: Schizophrenia patients with and without auditory hallucinations and a healthy control group completed a speech discriminati

Framing discrimination: effects of inclusion versus exclusion mind-sets on stereotypic judgments.

Three studies investigated how inclusion versus exclusion strategies differentially lead to stereotypic decisions. In inclusion strategies, suitable targets are selected from a list of candidates, whereas in exclusion strategies, unsuitable candidates are eliminated. Across 2 separate target domains (Study 1: male and female politicians; Studies 2 and 3: African American and European American basketball players), exclusion strategies, as compared with inclusion strategies, elicited higher levels of both sensitivity stereotyping (i.e., greater difficulty distinguishing among members of stereoty

Measurement of the lowest dosage of phenobarbital that can produce drug discrimination in rats.

RATIONALE: Accurate measurement of the threshold dosage of phenobarbital that can produce drug discrimination (DD) may improve our understanding of the mechanisms and properties of such discrimination. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare three methods for determining the threshold dosage for phenobarbital (D) versus no-drug (N) DD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats learned a D versus N DD in two-lever operant training chambers. A titration scheme was employed to increase or decrease dosage at the end of each 18-day block of sessions depending on whether the rat had achieved criterion accuracy

A quantitative model of the "effective" signal processing in the auditory system. I. Model structure.

This paper describes a quantitative model for signal processing in the auditory system. The model combines a series of preprocessing stages with an optimal detector as the decision device. The present paper gives a description of the various preprocessing stages and of the implementation of the optimal detector. The output of the preprocessing stages is a time-varying activity pattern to which "internal noise" is added. In the decision process, a stored temporal representation of the signal to be detected (template) is compared with the actual activity pattern. The comparison amounts to calcul

A novel bias-free approach for robust perceptual threshold estimation.

Perceptual threshold estimation stands as a fundamental variable manipulation in psychology and neuroscience, fine-tuning sensory input intensity to align perceptual precision across individuals. Current methods, such as constant stimuli and staircase procedures, inaccurately assume that perceptual thresholds are influenced solely by sensitivity, overlooking the role of response biases and consequently leading to unreliable estimates. The underlying reason is that classical methods traditionally focus on hit rates-the correct detection of stimuli-while neglecting false alarms, where participan

Disentangling the Relationship between Physician and Organizational Performance: A Signal Detection Approach.

Background. In previous research, we employed a signal detection approach to measure the performance of general practitioners (GPs) when deciding about urgent referral for suspected lung cancer. We also explored associations between provider and organizational performance. We found that GPs from practices with higher referral positive predictive value (PPV; chance of referrals identifying cancer) were more reluctant to refer than those from practices with lower PPV. Here, we test the generalizability of our findings to a different cancer. Methods. A total of 252 GPs responded to 48 vignettes d

Improvement of the Error-detection Mechanism in Adults with Dyslexia Following Reading Acceleration Training.

The error-detection mechanism aids in preventing error repetition during a given task. Electroencephalography demonstrates that error detection involves two event-related potential components: error-related and correct-response negativities (ERN and CRN, respectively). Dyslexia is characterized by slow, inaccurate reading. In particular, individuals with dyslexia have a less active error-detection mechanism during reading than typical readers. In the current study, we examined whether a reading training programme could improve the ability to recognize words automatically (lexical representatio

Stressful life events and tinnitus : Reflections and speculations.

The role of life events has not been extensively studied in the context of tinnitus. There is, however, evidence about the psychological impact of tinnitus and about the influence of psychological processes as mediators of the tinnitus experience. On the basis of this evidence, the possibility that stressful life events can act as a trigger for tinnitus is discussed; although the evidence is fragmentary and indirect, the possibility cannot be discounted. It is argued that the onset of tinnitus and the associated clinical encounters can constitute an acute stressful life event, and the ongoing

Are recognition deficits following occipital lobe TMS explained by raised detection thresholds?

It is known that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) administered over the occipital pole suppresses recognition of visual objects. Our aim was to ascertain whether this suppression can be interpreted as a change in visual contrast threshold. Four subjects detected the orientation of an U-shaped hook flashed for 21 ms. Under control conditions, mean contrast threshold was found at 0.88 log units Weber contrast. Thresholds were raised if TMS was applied 40-200 ms after the visual stimulus. Maximum elevation was 1.67 log units under TMS at 120 ms stimulus onset asynchrony. This phenomenon ca

Extreme-value signal detection theory for recognition memory: The parametric road not taken.

Signal detection theory has long served as a cornerstone of psychological research, particularly in recognition memory. Yet its conventional application hinges almost exclusively on the Gaussian assumption, an adherence rooted more in historical convenience than theoretical necessity that comes with a number of well-documented drawbacks. In this work, we critically examine these limitations and pursue a principled parametric alternative: signal detection theory modeling based on extreme-value distributions of event minima. A key feature of this family of models is its grounding in a behavioral
