Brown midrib sorghum silage for midlactation dairy cows.

Brown midrib sorghum silage was compared with alfalfa, corn, and normal sorghum silages for its effect on performance, ruminal metabolism, and digestive kinetics of Holstein dairy cows in midlactation. Twelve cows averaging 90 +/- 5 DIM were assigned to one of four diets in replicated 4 x 4 Latin squares with 4-wk periods. Additionally, 3 ruminally fistulated cows (95 +/- 20 DIM) were assigned to the same diets in a 3 x 4 Youden square for measurement of ruminal characteristics. Diets were fed as isonitrogenous TMR that contained 65% silage (DM basis). The DMI was greater for the corn and brow

Injury from silage wagon accident complicated by mucormycosis.

Infection due to farm machinery injuries may be caused by microorganisms found in soil or decaying vegetable material. A case of injury due to entrapment of a young boy in a silage wagon is reported here. His injuries were complicated by infection with Aspergillus species, Absidia species, Rhizopus species (the latter two are members of the Mucorales order), and Pseudomonas maltophilia. Successful treatment of his infection followed aggressive surgical debridement of the anterior abdominal wall, amphotericin B, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and surgical closure utilizing delayed placement of spli

A Fatal Case of Gas Intoxication in Silage Pit.

Fatalities due to gas intoxication are rare in routine forensic casework. The most common gas is carbon monoxide, with other gases (ammonia, methane, propane and butane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide) encountered only very rarely. In this report, we describe the accidental death of two maintenance workers who were found in the silage pit at a biogas plant. The autopsy revealed signs of asphyxia in both the deceased. Analysis of the gaseous mixtures in the tank using an infrared gas analyzer showed slightly elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide. Toxicological examination of the blood of

Effects of feeding grass silage- and corn silage-based diets in phenotypically low and high methane-emitting Holstein-Friesian dairy cows.

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) whether replacing grass silage with corn silage reduced methane (CH4) emissions equally effectively in dairy cows with a low or high CH4 emission level, (2) whether low or high CH4-emitting cows remained low and high CH4 emitters irrespectively of the diet fed, and (3) whether the diet and CH4 emission level affected lactation performance, feed intake, and rumen microbiome. Emissions of CH4 of 192 lactating dairy cows were measured with the GreenFeed system (C-Lock Inc.) in a screening phase to select the 12 highest and the 12 lowest CH4-emitt

Feeding behavior of Holstein and Jersey cows fed diets based on either alfalfa silage or corn silage at 2 forage fiber levels.

Our objective was to assess the effects of 2 levels of forage NDF (FNDF), mainly from either alfalfa silage (AS) or corn silage (CS), on the feeding behavior of Holstein and Jersey cows. Twenty-four lactating primiparous cows (12 Holsteins and 12 Jerseys) were used in a triplicated split-plot 4 × 4 Latin square study in which breed formed the main plots and diets were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial in the subplots. Dietary treatments were 2 FNDF levels (19% FNDF [low FNDF; LF] or 24% FNDF [high FNDF; HF]) and 2 FNDF sources (70:30 or 30:70 ratio of AS:CS). During each 28-d period, samples of TM

Enteric listeriosis in grazing steers supplemented with spoiled silage.

An outbreak of enteric listeriosis in steers that were fed spoiled silage is reported. The outbreak started 2 days after ~200 animals in a single paddock were given a supplement of spoiled silage. Forty animals (20%) were affected, and 13 (6.5%) died over a period of 10 days. Affected animals were recumbent, depressed, and had diarrhea with mucus and fibrin. Gross and microscopic findings in 3 animals that were subjected to autopsy included excess peritoneal fluid, congestion and edema of abomasum, suppurative enteritis and colitis, and suppurative mesenteric lymphadenitis. Two strains of List

[Listeria strains isolated from sick animals and consumed silage].

Forty-eight strains of listeria isolated from sick animals (27 goats, 19 sheep, 2 cows) from 33 farms, and 40 isolated from the silage eaten by these animals were studied. Listeria were isolated more frequently from poor quality silages than from those of good quality, although they were found in 11 out of 31 excellent silages with a pH value comprised between 3.6 and 4. The 88 strains were characterized by biochemical and serological examinations, phage typing and measurement of their virulence. They showed a wide variety of characteristics and in only one case, three strains with the same ch

Effects of triticale silage substitution for corn silage on growth performance, serum biomarkers, rumen fermentation, and rumen bacterial community of Pingliang Red Cattle.

BACKGROUND: In the Loess Plateau region, corn silage production is constrained by water scarcity and rising costs. Triticale silage offers a promising alternative, yet its impact on the performance, metabolism, and rumen microbiota of Pingliang Red Cattle (PRC) remains poorly understood. This study therefore evaluated the effects of substituting corn silage with triticale silage on growth performance, pancreatic enzyme activity, serum biochemistry, rumen fermentation, and the rumen microbial community in PRC, and applied the TOPSIS method to determine the optimal substitution ratio. METHODS:

Effects of partial replacement of corn silage and oat silage with dried extracted stevia plant on production, feeding behavior, and digestibility in dairy cows.

The objectives were to determine the effects of partially replacing corn and oat silages with dried extracted stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) on production performance, behavior, ruminal fermentation, N metabolism, digestibility, and fecal characteristics of Holstein cows. Eighteen cows (133 ± 16 d postpartum) were assigned to a sextuplicate 3 × 3 Latin square design, with treatment sequence balanced for carry-over. Cows were assigned to squares based on ECM yield in the week preceding enrollment. Diets contained 60% of the total DM as forage and stevia replaced silages to represent 0% (ST0), 25% (

Primary photosensitization related to ingestion of alfalfa silage by cattle.

A herd of 650 Holstein cows was examined for skin disease. Approximately 400 of the lactating adults were affected, but heifers, calves, and nonlactating cows were clinically normal. The condition was characteristic of primary photosensitization. Milk production of the affected cows was normal. Affected cows did not appear to be ill, and none of the cows was icteric. Three of 7 cows had high serum gamma-glutamyltransferase activities, but in the other 4 cows, activity was within the reference range. Serum activities of other hepatic enzymes were within reference ranges in the 7 cows that were

[Poisoning with ammonium tetraformiate--a substance used in silage formation].

The case is reported of a 23-year-old man, working in agriculture, who was exposed to the silage additive ammonium tetraformiate, a strong acid. While pumping the fluid some of the substance entered his mouth and was swallowed. He vomited and developed transient dyspnoea. On admission he appeared acidotic, with haemolysis and haemoglobinuria. Lesions on the soft palate and in the oesophagus were observed, and a pulmonary infiltrate developed. Information on the substance was initially not available. Labeling appeared incomplete and misleading. Optimal treatment was delayed.

Influence of particle size on the effectiveness of the fiber in alfalfa silage.

The objective was to determine the influence of alfalfa silage particle length on milk yield, milk composition, and chewing activity. Sixteen multiparous lactating Holsteins were used in each of two separate feeding trials over a 2-yr period providing two repetitions. Each trial was based on 4 x 4 Latin squares with 21-d periods. All four diets (2-yr average, dry basis) contained a basal level of 10.7% neutral detergent fiber from corn silage and 2.3% neutral detergent fiber from chopped alfalfagrass hay. One of the diets served as a low forage, low fiber control and contained only the basal f

Influence of particle size on the effectiveness of the fiber in barley silage.

We used eight multiparous Holstein cows in a 4 x 4 Latin square design to evaluate the effects and possible interactions between silage particle size and concentrate level on chewing activities and productivity of cows fed barley-based total mixed rations (TMR). Diets were designed with two forage-to-concentrate ratios (low forage, 45:55, high forage 55:45), combined with two theoretical chop lengths of barley silage (short = 4.68 mm and long = 18.75 mm). Diets were formulated to provide similar and above-minimum neutral detergent fiber recommended for cows in early lactation. Increasing silag

Influence of particle size on the effectiveness of the fiber in corn silage.

This experiment evaluated the influence of particle size on the effectiveness of fiber in corn silage relative to that in hay crop, which consisted of mostly alfalfa silage. Fifteen multiparous Holstein cows were assigned to five treatments in each of 2 yr. The design was replicated but truncated 5 x 5 Latin squares with three 21-d periods in 1994 and four 21-d periods in 1995. The five diets (2-yr average, dry basis) were a basal, low fiber control with 12% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from hay crop forage (60% of total diet NDF); a high fiber control with 22% NDF from hay crop forage (82% o

In vitro and in vivo changes in human complement caused by silage.

Aqueous extracts of silage samples from four farms in up-state New York were reacted in vitro with normal human serum. Hemolytic levels of complement component C3 were consumed in a dose-dependent fashion, and the four extracts differed in their relative activity rankings. Studies with chelated serum indicate that the alternative complement pathway is involved in the activation, and the active fragment C3b was demonstrated. Serum levels of hemolytic C3 and C4 in vivo were quantified before and after farmers performed their normal silo unloading operations. Although the study groups were small,

Wild birds and silage as reservoirs of Listeria in the agricultural environment.

A method for the isolation of listeria which enabled a more rapid detection of the organism was used to examine samples of silage and bird faeces. Faecal samples indicated that seagulls feeding at sewage works had a higher rate of carriage than those elsewhere. Faecal samples from rooks generally suggested a low incidence of listeria except on one occasion when eight of twenty samples contained Listeria monocytogenes: this coincided with the nesting season and the peak period for listeriosis in sheep. The incidence of L. monocytogenes in clamp silages ranged from 2.5-5.9%, but in samples of bi
