A number of pupal and adult tissues of eight Australian blackfly species representing three genera, Austrosimulium, Cnephia and Simulium, were examined for the presence of polytene chromosomes. Banded polytene chromosomes were found in malpighian tubules, hind gut, fat body, and ovary, but only those from the malpighian tubules of female adults and pupae were of good quality. A detailed comparison of polytene chromosomes from larval salivary glands and adult malpighian tubules was made in S. ornatipes and, to a limited extent, in S. melatum. The banding patterns of chromosomes from both tissue

All except one of the important groups of West African vectors of Onchocerca volvulus that lie within the Simulium damnosum complex can be distinguished from each other using morphological characteristics. The exception is S. squamosum, which overlaps with other species, and this results in significant levels of misidentification. Variation in the untranscribed H3-H4 histone intergenic spacer region of flies of the S. damnosum complex has now been investigated. Although a CAA/CAG microsatellite was found to be hyper-variable and unsuitable for species diagnosis, a 10-bp indel seemed to vary in

Strong epidemiological evidence suggests that onchocerciasis may be associated with epilepsy-hence the name onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE). However, the pathogenesis of OAE still needs to be elucidated, as recent studies have failed to detect Onchocerca volvulus in the central nervous system of persons with OAE. Therefore, it was suggested that a potentially neurotropic virus transmitted by blackflies could play a role in triggering OAE. To investigate this hypothesis, adult blackflies were collected in an onchocerciasis-endemic area with a high OAE prevalence in the Ntui Health Dist

Cytological descriptions are given for two sympatric sibling species, Simulium praelargum IIIL-st and Simulium praelargum IIIL-1.2, from Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. Sibling IIIL-1.2 differs from IIIL-st by a two step fixed included inversion (IIIL-1.2) found on the long arm of chromosome III. Both siblings possess heterochromatinized IIIS polytene chromosome ends, while IIIL-1.2 is unique within the Simuliidae in that it exhibits a very large enhanced chromocentre that persists in normal somatic tissue, contrary to other chromocentre-containing taxa. In IIIL-1.2, the chromocentre occurs as

More than 2000 species of black flies feed on vertebrate blood; 1.5% of all species are vectors of pathogens that cause human diseases. Of nine simuliid-borne animal diseases, only two, mansonellosis and onchocerciasis, afflict humans. Onchocerciasis is a debilitating disease infecting an estimated 40 million people in Africa, Latin America, and Yemen, whereas mansonellosis is a mild disease in the Neotropics. Cytogenetic studies of natural populations of more than 500 species of black flies have revealed that the classic morphospecies of taxonomists is typically a complex of two or more repro

From May 1984 to May 1985, the transmission of onchocerciasis by blackflies (Dipteria: Simuliidae) was studied around Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb rivers in southwest Ethiopia. The predominant anthropophilic species of Simulium at both localities were S. (Edwardsellum) damnosum sensu lato and S. (Lewisellum) ethiopiense. Some S. (Anasolen) dentulosum also landed on human bait at Gilgel Ghibe river. Dissections of S. damnosum from Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb revealed mean parous rates of 92% (n = 18,291) and 84% (n = 9530), respectively. S. ethiopiense from Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb showed mean parous rates

The laboratory colonization of African simuliids would facilitate critical work on many aspects of their biology and onchocerciasis vectors could be studied away from natural breeding-sites. In addition to a review of the literature of past achievements in this field, the authors' own studies are described: these centred on the Simulium damnosum and S. neavei complexes because they include vectors of human onchocerciasis. Other species studied included vectors of Onchocerca gutturosa and avian Haematozoa. Techniques for collecting the various developmental stages of African simuliids are discu

BACKGROUND: Leucocytozoonosis, a parasitic disease of birds, is caused by haemosporidian protozoan parasites of the genus Leucocytozoon, which infect diverse avian species, including poultry. These parasites are transmitted by several black fly species, but knowledge of the factors determining the diversity and prevalence in these vectors, which is crucial for fully understanding disease epidemiology, is largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated factors associated with the prevalence and diversity of Leucocytozoon species in black flies from Thailand.
METHODS: Adults of two black fly

Adult black flies (Simuliidae) are medically important insects and they are the sole vector of Onchocerca volvulus. Immature black flies are major components of aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages in streams and play a vital role in nutrient dynamics. In this study, we examined effect of hierarchical dynamics (spatio-temporal pattern) on the distribution of immature black flies in South Indian streams. The sampling was done in streams of Western Ghats, South India. A total of 16 species belong to two subgenera: Simulium (10 species) and Gowmphostilbia (6 species) of Simulium were observed. A

Anticoagulant activity was determined in salivary gland extracts from four species of black flies, i.e., Simulium vittatum Zetterstedt, Simulium argus Williston, Simulium metallicum Bellardi, and Simulium ochraceum Walker. Inhibition of coagulation factor Xa occurred among all four, whereas thrombin inhibition was detected in S. argus and S. vittatum only. Both bovine and human alpha-thrombins were inhibited with the highest activity occurring with S. argus salivary gland extracts. Factor Xa inhibition was highest in S. ochraceum, an anthropophilic species and vector of Onchocerca volvulus, an

A collapsible animal-type silhouette trap was designed to catch zoophilic female blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) which feed on the head or ventral surface of cattle. The trap was assessed for its ability to sample attacking blackflies by comparison with simultaneous manual catches from a bait cow, in an enzootic bovine onchocerciasis area in North Wales. In thirteen 1-hour collections, the trap provided a representative sample of the blackfly population in terms of the relative abundance of species. There was a strong correlation between the catch sizes from both methods (r = +0.73), and the

BACKGROUND: Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are ecologically important components of lotic ecosystems and a public health concern due to their aggressive biting behavior, pathogen transmission, and induction of allergic and inflammatory reactions in humans and livestock. Despite their relevance, experimental research on Simuliidae remains limited compared with other dipteran vectors, largely because their immature stages require specific aquatic conditions that are difficult to reproduce in the laboratory. Larval development depends on continuous water flow, high dissolved oxygen, and suspen

Four new species of black flies are described based on the females, males and pupae from Sumatra, Indonesia, and are assigned to three species-groups in two subgenera of the genus Simulium Latreille s. l.: Simulium (Gomphostilbia) kandisense sp. nov. in the S. asakoae species-group, S. (Simulium) kotsuboyui sp. nov. and S. (S.) solokense sp. nov. in the S. iridescens species-group, and S. (S.) bengkuruense sp. nov. in the S. striatum species-group. The two new species in the S. iridescens species-group and one new species in the S. striatum species-group were formerly regarded as S. (S.) iride

Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are important vectors of pathogens, including filarial nematodes, protozoans, and arboviruses, which significantly impact human and animal health. Although their role in arbovirus transmission has not been as thoroughly studied as that of mosquitoes and ticks, advances in molecular tools, particularly metagenomics, have enabled the identification of non-cultivable viruses, significantly enhancing our understanding of black-fly-borne viral diversity and their public and veterinary health implications. However, these methods can also detect insect-specific virus

A number of sibling species in the Simulium damnosum species complex transmit River Blindness (onchocerciasis) in tropical Africa. Black fly sibling species can be reliably recognized only through analysis of the larval polytene chromosomes. The routine, unambiguous assignment of the potentially disease-transmitting adult females to a particular species is virtually impossible. Two molecular assays to identify the sibling species of biting female flies are presented. The first relies on PCR-mediated amplification of internal transcribed spacers of the nuclear rDNA loci while the second involve

The duration of Simulium yahense Vajime & Dunbar larval development on a dam spillway in Harbel, Liberia, was observed to make accurate decisions regarding the frequency of larvicide treatments against this onchocerciasis vector. Larval development required a minimum of 10-12 d from eclosion to first pupation. Initial larvicidal treatment for S. yahense control would require a treatment cycle of 7 d. Once suppression of adult and larval populations is achieved, a 9-12-9-12 day treatment cycle could be adopted.

Filarial parasites cause diseases in humans and other animals and are transmitted primarily by hematophagous Diptera, including black flies (Simuliidae). However, knowledge of the vectorial role of black flies in transmitting filarial parasites in tropical Asia is limited. We used molecular approaches to detect filarial parasites in two common black flies, Simulium asakoae and S. khelangense, in Laos. Among 483 black flies, 15 were infected with filarial parasites. Based on sequence similarity analyses of the COI and 12S rDNA genes, the parasites were closely related to two filarial taxa: one

In a 3-year study during 1990-92, larval collections of the Simulium damnosum complex from the River Corubal system in Guinea Bissau revealed that the only sibling species present were S. sirbanum and the Konkouré form of S.konkourense, but not S.damnosum s.s. which had been found at some of the localities (Saltinho and Cusselinta) in a previous survey by Quillévéré et al. (1981). Their differential distributions were seasonally consistent between years. S. sirbanum was concentrated in the upper reaches of the Corubal, moving downstream at the end of the dry season to exploit new breeding grou

Laboratory reared nulliparous female flies of six temperate species of Simuliidae were examined for their susceptibility to infection with Onchocerca ochengi by intrathoracic injection of cryopreserved skin microfilariae obtained from cattle in Mali. Three species (S. equinum, S. ornatum and S. erythrocephalum) supported development to the infective stage, one species (S. variegatum) allowed partial development and the remaining two species (S. reptans and S. aureum) were insusceptible to infection. The most suitable surrogate vectors were S. equinum and S. ornatum which had survival rates of
