Singing for children and adults with bronchiectasis.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiectasis is a common respiratory disease, especially in developing countries. Its cause varies from chronic infection to rare immune deficiencies. Bronchiectasis can be present with other respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). People with bronchiectasis may suffer from chronic cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain and coughing up blood. Their lung function may decline with time. These can also have a negative impact on their quality of life. Thus, a holistic management is needed to provide treatment and support. Therapies which i

Acoustics and perception of overtone singing.

Overtone singing, a technique of Asian origin, is a special type of voice production resulting in a very pronounced, high and separate tone that can be heard over a more or less constant drone. An acoustic analysis is presented of the phenomenon and the results are described in terms of the classical theory of speech production. The overtone sound may be interpreted as the result of an interaction of closely spaced formants. For the lower overtones, these may be the first and second formant, separated from the lower harmonics by a nasal pole-zero pair, as the result of a nasalized articulation

Singing behavior and singing functions of black-crested gibbons (Nomascus concolor jingdongensis) at Mt. Wuliang, central Yunnan, China.

We used data on loud duetted and solo songs collected from one habituated polygynous group of black-crested gibbons (Nomascus concolor jingdongensis) on Mt. Wuliang, Yunnan, to test several hypotheses about the functions of these songs. The major functions proposed for loud gibbon songs include resource defense, mate defense, pairbonding, group cohesion and mate attraction. Duet bouts are generally initiated by adult males, who select the highest trees near to ridges or on steep slopes as singing trees. Such trees facilitate voice transmission and inter-group communication. Singing trees tende

Predictors of improvement in cardiovascular biomarkers with singing.

Although regular physical exercise lowers the risk of coronary heart disease in both primary and secondary prevention populations, physical exercise may be difficult for some individuals, prompting the need for alternative therapies. This study is a sub-analysis of a previously completed clinical trial that aimed to assess the effect of singing on cardiac biomarkers. The previous trial included 60 patients recruited from a cardiology clinic (mean age 61 ± 13 years; 68 % women) with measurements of vascular endothelial function and heart rate variability (HRV), and the results showed that 14 mi

Acute effects of singing on cardiovascular biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Singing is a physical activity involving components of the vagal nerves manifested as changes in cardiac autonomic regulation. AIMS: The aim of this pilot study is to investigate the acute effects of singing on biomarkers of cardiovascular health. METHODS: Adult subjects were recruited from cardiology clinics to participate in a single 90-min study visit. Vascular function was measured at the fingertips with peripheral arterial tonometry (PAT) before and after singing to a 14-min video led by a voice expert. Heart rate variability (HRV) was measured with a chest strap sensor at b

Boys in a famous choir: Singing and ticcing.

This informal observational study on the tic prevalence in 40 young singers was carried out during a public concert of Bach's Christmas Oratorio. Tics were highly prevalent (present in 35% = 14 boys). Given the possibility of an overrepresentation of perioral tics in this group of highly achieving young vocal artists, one might speculate that there is a relationship between the ability of the motor system to produce a surplus of movements (tics) and high performance (exquisite singing). Despite the unusual study design, with all its limitations, our observations strengthen the view that tics m

Application of singing techniques for the treatment of dysphonia.

Management of voice disorders requires careful examination of vocal control and compensation, with exercises designed to improve efficient compensation while reducing effects of pathology on vocal production. Specific singing exercises have been proven to be beneficial in the resolution and compensation for pathology. Detailed assessment and intervention strategies are outlined from the perspective of the vocologist, who specializes in combining vocal arts with voice therapy.

Vocal ontogeny in neotropical singing mice (Scotinomys).

Isolation calls produced by dependent young are a fundamental form of communication. For species in which vocal signals remain important to adult communication, the function and social context of vocal behavior changes dramatically with the onset of sexual maturity. The ontogenetic relationship between these distinct forms of acoustic communication is surprisingly under-studied. We conducted a detailed analysis of vocal development in sister species of Neotropical singing mice, Scotinomys teguina and S. xerampelinus. Adult singing mice are remarkable for their advertisement songs, rapidly arti

Change in singing voice production, objectively measured.

Although subglottal pressures in conversational speech are relatively easily measured and thus known, the higher values that sometimes occur in singing (especially in tenors) have received little attention in the literature. Still more unusual is the opportunity to measure a large-scale change over decades in the application of pressure in singing production. This study compares measurements of subglottal pressure in a tenor/singing teacher (JS) at two points in his career: in his early thirties, when he was a subject in HS's dissertation study on the efficiency of voice production; and recent

Upper Airway Thermoregulation During Singing Warm-Up.

The primary aim of this research was to quantify the degree to which the upper airway temperature changes with singing warm-up. Based on prior upper airway thermoregulation research it was hypothesized that upper airway temperature would not significantly increase during singing warm up when compared to prewarm up and recovery phases. Ten participants completed a short singing warm-up of their choice until they felt sufficiently warmed up while upper airway temperature was measured at 1 second intervals via a transnasal thermistor placed against the posterior pharyngeal wall, just above the la

Glottal Adduction and Subglottal Pressure in Singing.

Previous research suggests that independent variation of vocal loudness and glottal configuration (type and degree of vocal fold adduction) does not occur in untrained speech production. This study investigated whether these factors can be varied independently in trained singing and how subglottal pressure is related to average glottal airflow, voice source properties, and sound level under these conditions. A classically trained baritone produced sustained phonations on the endoscopic vowel [i:] at pitch D4 (approximately 294 Hz), exclusively varying either (a) vocal register; (b) phonation t

RACE AND RECOGNITION: THE TIME OF OUR SINGING.

Literature affords the opportunity to consider the racial fear, hatred and hostility that can flare in moments when the otherness in the human face occludes the common bonds that join us together. Richard Powers' (2003) compelling novel, The Time of Our Singing, highlights ways in which racial tensions continue to haunt us, impeding the efforts of successive generations to heal the wounds and move forward. In the novel, the parents' efforts to move "beyond race" leave their children utterly unprepared for the ways in which race informs and obstruct their experience, as what has been denied ret

The effect of singing on snoring and daytime somnolence.

The objective of the study is to compare the prevalence and severity of snoring and daytime somnolence amongst semiprofessional choir singers and non-singers. It is a cross-sectional comparative study and the setting is at a tertiary otorhinolaryngology referral centre. Adult singers were recruited from two mixed-gender choirs in London. The control group consisted of healthy volunteers who do not sing. The weight and height of all participants were measured by a single investigator. A questionnaire was completed by each subject, and the snoring habit section completed by their spouses or part
